A list of the best Philadelphia Eagles of all time. The Philadelphia Eagles are one of the bedrock franchises of the NFL. Formed in 1933, the Eagles have featured some of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/best-football-players-ever">greatest players in NFL history</a> on its roster. Philadelphia has won three championships in franchise history, but none since 1960. Those early Eagles teams featured some of the best Eagles players of all time. Steve Van Buren, Chuck Bednarik and Tommy McDonald are among the Hall of Famers to have spent significant time playing for the Eagles. These players are considered some of the best Eagles ever.The 1980s began a run of success for the Eagles. Some of the best players in Eagles history have been on the team since. Reggie White and Randall Cunningham are some the top players from this era. Under the watchful eye of head coach Andy Reid, the Eagles experienced some the best years in the team's history. Led by players like Donovan McNabb, Brian Dawkins, Brian Westbrook and Jon Runyan, the Eagles won four straight NFC East titles and went to the NFC Championship game four times. The Eagles were defeated by the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX.&nbsp;This is a list of the best Philadelphia Eagles of all time. Brian Collins Westbrook (born September 2, 1979) is a former American football running back who played for nine seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the third round of the 2002 NFL Draft after playing college football for Villanova University. Following an eight-year career with the Eagles, in which he earned two Pro Bowl selections in 2004 and 2007, Westbrook signed with the San Francisco 49ers, for whom he played in 2010.

LeSean McCoy

LeSean Kamel "Shady" McCoy (born July 12, 1988) is an American football running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft after playing college football at Pittsburgh. In the 2015 offseason, McCoy was traded to the Bills for linebacker Kiko Alonso. After the trade, he signed a new five-year contract worth $40 million. McCoy made the Pro Bowl in each of his first three years in Buffalo, helping the team snap a 17-year playoff drought, and has become one of a few select NFL running backs to surpass 10,000 career rushing yards. McCoy is a two-time Super Bowl champion (LIV, LV), six time Pro-Bowler, and two-time All Pro (2011, 2013).

Wilbert Montgomery

Wilbert Montgomery (born September 16, 1954) is a former American football player in the National Football League for nine years with the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions.  In the past, Montgomery has been the running backs and tight ends coach for St. Louis Rams (1997–2005), the running backs coach for the Detroit Lions (2006–2007), the running backs coach for the Baltimore Ravens (2008–2013), and the running backs coach for the Cleveland Browns (2014–2015).

Steve Van Buren

Stephen Wood Van Buren (December 28, 1920 − August 23, 2012) was an American football halfback who played professionally for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL) from 1944 to 1951. Regarded as a powerful and punishing runner with excellent speed, through eight NFL seasons he won four league rushing titles, including three straight from 1947 to 1949. At a time when teams played twelve games a year, he was the first NFL player to rush for over ten touchdowns in a season—a feat he accomplished three times—and the first to have multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons. When he retired, he held the NFL career records for rushing attempts, rushing yards, and rushing touchdowns.
Van Buren played college football for Louisiana State University, where he led the NCAA in scoring in his senior season for the LSU Tigers. After leading LSU to victory in the Orange Bowl, he was drafted by the Eagles with the fifth overall pick in the 1944 NFL Draft. Van Buren acquired many nicknames over his career in reference to his running style, including "Wham Bam", "Moving Van", and "Supersonic Steve". He was the driving force for the Eagles in the team's back-to-back NFL championships in 1948 and 1949; he scored the only touchdown of the 1948 NFL Championship Game against the Chicago Cardinals, and in the next year's championship game against the Los Angeles Rams he set postseason records with 31 carries and 196 rushing yards.
After his playing career, Van Buren coached in minor league football, winning an Atlantic Coast Football League (ACFL) championship with the Newark Bears in 1963. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1965. Van Buren is a member of the NFL 1940s All-Decade Team and the National Football League 75th Anniversary All-Time Team. Considered one of the greatest players in Eagles franchise history, his number 15 jersey is retired by the team, and he is enshrined in the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. For his college career, he was inducted into the Louisiana State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1944 and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1961.

Darren Sproles

Darren Lee Sproles (born June 20, 1983) is an American football player who is a running back and return specialist for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Kansas State, where he is the all-time leading rusher, and was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft. 
Sproles was named as a kick returner on the Chargers 50th Anniversary Team. He joined the New Orleans Saints in free agency before the 2011 season, and broke the NFL record for most single-season all-purpose yardage the same year, with 2,696 yards. During that season, he set career highs with 603 yards rushing (6.9 yards per carry) and 710 yards receiving and a combined total of 9 touchdowns. Sproles is the first player in NFL history with 2,200+ all purpose yards in 4 different seasons (2008–2011). Sproles is currently ranked 6th in career all-purpose yards in NFL history (19,020 yards).

Duce Staley

Duce Staley (born February 27, 1975) is a former American football running back in the National Football League best known for his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles. He also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, winning Super Bowl XL with them against the Seattle Seahawks. He played college football at South Carolina. He is currently the assistant head coach and running backs coach for the Philadelphia Eagles who won Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots.

Keith Alan Byars (born October 14, 1963) is an American sports broadcaster and former American football fullback in the National Football League for the Philadelphia Eagles, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots and New York Jets.

Herschel Walker

Herschel Walker (born March 3, 1962) is an American former professional football player, bobsledder, sprinter, and mixed martial artist. He played college football for the University of Georgia, earned consensus All-American honors three times and won the 1982 Heisman Trophy. Walker began his professional football career with the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League (USFL), before joining the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL). In the NFL, he also played for the Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Giants. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.

Ricky Watters

Richard James Watters (born April 7, 1969) is a former American football running back who played for the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League. Watters played college football at the University of Notre Dame where he played wide receiver on the school's 1988 national champion team. He also won Super Bowl XXIX as a member of the 1994 49ers over the San Diego Chargers. Watters was known throughout his playing career for his outstanding receiving skills and his unique high-step running style, which earned him the nickname Ricky "Running" Watters, from ESPN sportcaster Chris Berman.
Ricky Watters also has appeared in the movie Any Given Sunday. He was the running back for the fictional team the Dallas Knights, featured in the final game of the movie. Watters is listed in the credits, and is clearly shown on the back of his Knights jersey #32.
Currently Watters is a motivational speaker for kids who, like himself, are adopted. He is also a recording artist, music producer, President and CEO of Tigero Entertainment and an author, having written the book, For Who For What, a Warrior’s Journey. He was the recent head football coach for Oak Ridge High School, Orlando, Florida until resigning on October 1, 2013. An architecture major in college, he returned to Notre Dame in 2014 to complete the three final credits necessary for a graphic design degree.

LeGarrette Blount

LeGarrette Montez Blount (; born December 5, 1986), nicknamed "The Train", is an American football running back who is currently a free agent. Blount rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his two seasons in junior college. He then committed to the Oregon Ducks football program as a junior, for the 2008 season. That year, he ran for over 1,000 yards and scored a school-record 17 touchdowns. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Tennessee Titans in 2010, but joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before the start of the 2010 NFL season. He also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2014, between his two stints with the New England Patriots, followed by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017 and the Detroit Lions in 2018.
With the Patriots, Blount won Super Bowl XLIX over the Seattle Seahawks and Super Bowl LI over the Atlanta Falcons. The following season he won Super Bowl LII with the Eagles, defeating his former team the Patriots. His 11 career rushing touchdowns in the playoffs are tied for 6th-most in NFL history.

Ronald "Po" James (born March 19, 1949 in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, United States) is a former American football running back who played for four seasons in the National Football League for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1972–1975. He was drafted by the Eagles in the fourth round of the 1972 NFL Draft. He played college football at New Mexico State.

Jay Ajayi

Jay Ajayi is a British American football running back for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Boise State and was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. In his first year with the Eagles, he won Super Bowl LII. Ajayi was born in London, England, on June 15, 1993, to Nigerian parents and moved to Maryland in the United States when he was seven years old in 2000. He eventually moved to Texas, where he attended Frisco Liberty High School. As a senior on the football team, he rushed for 2,240 yards and had 35 touchdowns. He also earned one varsity letter in track & field as a member of the 4x400-meter (3:21.75), 4 × 200 m (1:29.44), and 4 × 100 m (42.86) district championship teams. Considered a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, he was ranked as the 41st best running back prospect of his class.

Heath Sherman

Heath B. Sherman (born March 27, 1967 in Wharton, Texas) is a former professional American football running back in the National Football League for five seasons for the Philadelphia Eagles.  He played college football at Texas A&I University and was drafted in the sixth round of the 1989 NFL Draft.

Earnest Jackson

Earnest Jackson, Jr. is a former professional American football running back in the National Football League.

Born in Needville, Texas on December 18, 1959 Jackson graduated from Lamar Consolidated High School before going to Texas A&M University in 1979. In four seasons with the Aggies Jackson had over 2,000 yards from scrimmage and 5 touchdowns.  He led the Southwest Conference in rushing yards per attempt in 1981 with 5.8 yards per carry.  He was drafted in the eighth round of the 1983 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. Jackson played 6 NFL seasons, 1983 and 1984 with the San Diego Chargers where he was a Pro Bowler in 1984 rushing for 1,179 yards and 8 touchdowns.  In 1985, he had another 1,000 yard season this time with the Philadelphia Eagles.  His last three NFL seasons were from 1986 to 1988 with the Pittsburgh Steelers.  In 1986, he was once again a Pro Bowler running for 910 yards and 5 touchdowns. Earnest Jackson ended his career with 4,167 yards on 1059 carries along with 22 touchdowns. He also caught the ball for 695 yards on 87 receptions and 2 touchdowns.

Norman Batton Bulaich (born December 25, 1946) is a former American football running back in the National Football League.

Wendell Smallwood

Wendell Lynn Smallwood Jr. is an American football running back for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at West Virginia, and was selected by the Eagles in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. 
As a true freshman at West Virginia in 2013, Smallwood played in 12 games and rushed for 221 yards on 39 carries with one touchdown. He also served as a kick returner, returning 30 kickoffs for a total of 541 yards. As a sophomore, he played in all 13 games and made nine starts. He had 722 rushing yards on 148 carries and two touchdowns. He also recorded 31 receptions, fifth most in school history for a single season. As a junior in 2015, Smallwood rushed for a Big 12-leading 1,519 yards on 238 carries with nine touchdowns.

Ryan Mathews

Ryan Jefforey Mathews (born October 10, 1987) is a former American football running back. He played college football at Fresno State. He was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the first round, 12th overall, in the 2010 NFL Draft. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2011.

Lee Bouggess

Lee Edward Bouggess (born January 18, 1948 in Louisville, Kentucky) is a former American football running back who played for three seasons in the National Football League for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1970–1973. He was drafted by the Eagles in the third round of the 1970 NFL Draft. He played college football at Louisville.

Darnell Autry

Harrington Darnell Autry (born June 19, 1976) is a former American football player who played college football at Northwestern University.  In his sophomore season, he helped lead the 1995 Northwestern Wildcats to the Big Ten Conference Championship and the 1996 Rose Bowl.  Autry finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy balloting for 1995 and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated after a Northwestern victory over Penn State. Autry finished seventh in the 1996 Heisman Trophy balloting.In his junior season, he led Northwestern to another share of the Big Ten championship.  After the season, Autry sued the NCAA to be allowed to act in a movie since he was a theater major and he did not want to lose NCAA eligibility.  The NCAA initially rejected his claims but eventually relented.  He was then drafted in the 1997 NFL Draft where he had little success playing for the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles.

DeMarco Murray

DeMarco Murray (born February 12, 1988) is a former American football running back who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 7 seasons. A three-time Pro Bowl selection and one-time first team All-Pro, he was the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2014 when he led the NFL in both rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.
Murray played college football at Oklahoma and was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft. After four seasons with the Cowboys, he played for the Philadelphia Eagles for one year and then the Tennessee Titans for two years. He currently serves as running backs coach at the University of Arizona.
