Charlie Manuel

Charles Fuqua Manuel, Jr. (born January 4, 1944), is an American baseball coach for the Philadelphia Phillies, and a former professional baseball outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB), as well as a former Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) player. During his playing career, he appeared over parts of six MLB seasons for the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Dodgers, before playing another six seasons in NPB with the Yakult Swallows and Kintetsu Buffaloes. Over four successive seasons in NPB, Manuel hit at least .312 with 37 home runs each season and won the 1979 Pacific League Most Valuable Player Award. After his playing career, he coached and managed the Cleveland Indians and managed the Philadelphia Phillies, winning the World Series in 2008. On August 13, 2019, Manuel replaced John Mallee as hitting coach for the Phillies for the remainder of the season.

Jim Fregosi

James Louis Fregosi (April 4, 1942 – February 14, 2014) was an American professional baseball shortstop and manager, who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1961 to 1978, primarily for the Los Angeles / California Angels. He would later move on to the New York Mets, Texas Rangers, and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Having been the Angels’ most productive and popular player for that franchise’s first eleven years of play, Fregosi quickly became its first star. He led the American League (AL) in defensive double plays twice, winning the 1967 Gold Glove Award, and, upon leaving the team, ranked ninth in AL history, with 818 double plays. Fregosi holds the franchise record with 70 career triples; several of his other team records, including career games (1,429), hits (1,408), doubles (219), runs (691), and runs batted in (546), were broken by Brian Downing over the course of the 1986 through 1989 seasons.
Fregosi returned to the team as manager, guiding it to its first-ever postseason appearance in 1979, and later managed the Philadelphia Phillies to the 1993 National League pennant.
In February, 2014, Fregosi suffered a stroke while on a MLB alumni cruise. He was taken to a hospital in Florida for treatment, where he was put on life support. Subsequently, after having suffered multiple additional strokes in the hospital, Fregosi was removed from life support and died a few hours later. At the time of his death, he was the top advance scout for the Atlanta Braves.

Danny Ozark

Daniel Leonard Ozark, born Orzechowski (November 24, 1923 – May 7, 2009), was an American coach and manager in Major League Baseball. As manager of the Philadelphia Phillies (1973 through August 31, 1979), Ozark led the Phils to three consecutive National League East Division championships (1976–77–78), but each year his team fell in the National League Championship Series.

Larry Bowa

Lawrence Robert Bowa (born December 6, 1945) is an American former professional baseball shortstop, manager, and coach in Major League Baseball. He played for the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, and New York Mets; and also managed the San Diego Padres and Phillies. He is currently the Senior Advisor to the General Manager for the Phillies.

Chief Zimmer

Charles Louis Zimmer (November 23, 1860 – August 22, 1949) was an American professional baseball player whose playing career spanned from 1884 to 1906. He played for 19 seasons as a catcher in Major League Baseball (MLB), including 13 seasons for the Cleveland Blues/Spiders (1887–1899), three seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1900–1902), and one season as the player/manager of the Philadelphia Phillies (1903).
Zimmer is regarded by some as "the finest defensive catcher of his day." He set Major League catching records for assists (188 in 1890), double plays (16 in 1895), runners caught stealing (183 in 1893), games at catcher (125 in 1890), and career fielding percentage (.943 as of 1896). As one of the game's first every-day catchers, The Sporting News in 1949 called Zimmer "baseball's original 'iron man'."  Offensively, Zimmer had a career batting average of .269, but hit above .300 four times, including a career high .340 batting average in 1895.
Zimmer was also the first president of the Players' Protective Association and a successful entrepreneur during his playing days, including operation of a wholesale and retail cigar business that he promoted while on the road. His most famous business venture, however, was "Zimmer's Baseball Game", a mechanical baseball parlor game that he invented in 1891 and became popular in the early to middle 1890s.

Pete Mackanin

Peter Mackanin, Jr. (pronounced ) (born August 1, 1951), is an American former professional baseball utility player, coach, scout, and manager, who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Texas Rangers, Montreal Expos, Philadelphia Phillies, and Minnesota Twins, from 1973 to 1981.
Mackanin briefly managed the Pittsburgh Pirates, in 2005. Following the firing of Cincinnati Reds manager Jerry Narron, in 2007, Mackanin (who was the team’s advance scout, at the time) became the acting Reds’ manager, for the duration of that campaign; the Reds then decided to replace Mackanin with Dusty Baker.
Mackanin was the Phillies' bench coach, from 2009 to 2012. After spending the  2013 season as a scout for the New York Yankees, he served as Philadelphia’s third base coach in 2014 and 2015, then became interim manager, following Ryne Sandberg’s resignation. The Phillies later announced that they were removing the "interim" label and Mackanin would serve as the team's manager in 2016. On September 29, 2017, the team announced that Mackanin would not return as the Phillies’ field manager, for the 2018 season.

Pat Corrales

Patrick Corrales (born March 20, 1941) is an American former professional baseball catcher, manager, and coach, who played in Major League Baseball (MLB), from 1964 to 1973, primarily for the Cincinnati Reds as well as the Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, and San Diego Padres.

Gene Mauch

Gene William Mauch (November 18, 1925 – August 8, 2005), was an American professional baseball player and manager, who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a second baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers (1944, 1948), Pittsburgh Pirates (1947), Chicago Cubs (1948–1949), Boston Braves (1950–1951), St. Louis Cardinals (1952), and Boston Red Sox (1956–1957).
Mauch was best known for managing four teams from 1960 to 1987. He is by far the winningest manager to have never won a league pennant (breaking the record formerly held by Jimmy Dykes), three times coming within a single victory. Mauch managed the Philadelphia Phillies (1960–1968), Montreal Expos (1969–1975 — as their inaugural manager), Minnesota Twins (1976–1980), and California Angels (1981–1982, 1985–1987). His 1,902 career victories ranked 8th in MLB history, when he retired, and his 3,942 total games managed ranked 4th. Mauch gained a reputation for playing a distinctive "small ball" style, which emphasized defense, speed, and base-to-base tactics on offense, rather than power hitting.

Paul Owens

Paul Francis Owens (February 7, 1924 – December 26, 2003), nicknamed "The Pope", was an American Major League Baseball (MLB) front office executive, manager, and scout. Earlier, during his playing career, Owens was a first baseman and catcher, and then a manager, in minor league baseball.

Bucky Harris

Stanley Raymond "Bucky" Harris (November 8, 1896 – November 8, 1977) was an American Major League Baseball player, manager and executive. In 1975, the Veterans Committee elected Harris, as a manager, to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Blondie Purcell

William Aloysius "Blondie" Purcell (March 16, 1854 – February 20, 1912), was an American Major League Baseball player born in Paterson, New Jersey.  He played for a total of 12 seasons while playing for eight different teams in two leagues. He appeared in 1097 games, mainly in the outfield, but did pitch in 79 games throughout his career, as well as other infield positions.
On June 6, 1882, while playing for the Buffalo Bisons, he was fined $10 ($260 today) for slicing open a soggy baseball. He did this to compel the umpire to put a fresh ball in play so his pitcher, Pud Galvin, would be able to throw his curveball.In 1883 he was the player-manager for the Philadelphia Quakers.  He took the reins of the team after just 17 games, when they were only 4–13 under player-manager Bob Ferguson, and finished the season with an equally dismal 17–81 record.  The 8th-place Quakers finished 23 games behind the 7th-place Detroit Wolverines.  Purcell never managed another major-league game. He is the first player to get a hit and also score a run in Philadelphia team history, however, doing so in his first AB of the 1883 season.
Purcell is one of the few players in major-league history whose death is not documented by the Society for American Baseball Research, although according to Find a Grave he has a death date of February 20, 1912, and is buried in Greenmount Cemetery located in Philadelphia.

Harry Wright

William Henry "Harry" Wright (January 10, 1835 – October 3, 1895) was an English-born American professional baseball player, manager, and developer. He assembled, managed, and played center field for baseball's first fully professional team, the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings.  It was there where he is credited with introducing innovations such as backing up infield plays from the outfield and shifting defensive alignments based on hitters' tendencies.  For his contributions as a manager and developer of the game, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1952 by the Veterans Committee. Wright was also the first to make baseball into a business by paying his players up to seven times the pay of the average working man.

Doc Prothro

James Thompson "Doc" Prothro Sr. (July 16, 1893 – October 14, 1971) was an infielder and manager in American Major League Baseball. Prothro was so nicknamed because he was a practicing dentist before signing his first professional baseball contract at age 26. His son, Tommy Prothro, became a successful coach in U.S. college football (at Oregon State University and UCLA) and, during the 1970s, led the Los Angeles Rams and San Diego Chargers of the National Football League.

A Memphis native, Doc Prothro attended the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He was a right-handed hitting third baseman and shortstop for the Washington Senators, Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds (1920; 1923–26), batting .318 in 180 games. He was discovered by baseball promoter Joe Engel, who managed the Chattanooga Lookouts at Engel Stadium. In 1928, Prothro became a manager in the Southern Association, then one of the higher-level minor leagues, leading the Memphis Chicks and Little Rock Travelers to four SA pennants through 1938.
In 1939, Prothro replaced Jimmie Wilson as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. In his three full seasons (1939-40–41) at the helm of the Phils, the club remained locked in the National League "cellar" — losers of 106, 103 and 111 games in successive seasons. Prothro's career mark of 138–320, with a .301 winning percentage, is the worst record in major league history for managers leading a club for at least three seasons.
Prothro was fired after the 1941 season and replaced by Hans Lobert and thereafter returned to the Southern Association, where he piloted the Chicks from 1942 to 1947. After he retired as Memphis' manager, he remained active as a co-owner of the club.
Prothro died in Memphis in 1971 at the age of 78.

Nick Leyva

Nicholas Tomas Leyva (born August 16, 1953) is an American former professional baseball player,  coach, and manager. After his retirement as a Minor League Baseball (MiLB) player, most of Leyva’s baseball career was spent as a coach. His Major League Baseball (MLB) coaching stops included the St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays (on two separate occasions), Milwaukee Brewers, and Pittsburgh Pirates. Leyva was the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies from 1989 though early 1991.

Frank Lucchesi

Frank Joseph Lucchesi (April 24, 1927 – June 8, 2019) was an American professional baseball player, manager and coach. He was the manager of three Major League Baseball (MLB) teams: the Philadelphia Phillies (1970–1972), Texas Rangers (1975–1977) and Chicago Cubs (1987, on an interim basis). Overall, Lucchesi posted a career win–loss record of 316–399 (.442).

Kaiser Wilhelm

Irvin Key "Kaiser" Wilhelm (January 26, 1874 – May 22, 1936) was a pitcher and manager in Major League Baseball. Between 1903 and 1914, he moved between the major and minor leagues several times. He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Beaneaters, Brooklyn Superbas and Baltimore Terrapins. After 1914, Wilhelm spent time as a player, manager and scout for the minor leagues. In 1921, he became the manager for the Philadelphia Phillies and pitched in four games for the team.
Wilhelm held the minor league baseball pitching record for consecutive scoreless innings for 97 years, but he was not recognized as the record holder by baseball officials until 2004. Baseball officials declared Wilhelm the record holder a few days before Brad Thompson was thought to have broken the record. Two days after Wilhelm's streak was thought to have been broken, The New York Times reported that a historian found three scoreless innings that were previously left off of Wilhelm's streak, indicating that his record had not actually been broken. Wilhelm is still the current record holder.

Lee Elia

Lee Constantine Elia (born July 16, 1937) is an American former professional baseball infielder, who played only sparingly in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Chicago White Sox (1966) and Chicago Cubs (1968). Following his playing career, he managed the Cubs (from 1982 to 1983) and Philadelphia Phillies (from 1987 to 1988), then served as a coach for the Phillies, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Baltimore Orioles, and Seattle Mariners. Elia was hired by the Atlanta Braves as a special assistant to general manager Frank Wren in November, 2010.

Ben Chapman

William Benjamin Chapman (December 25, 1908 – July 7, 1993) was an American outfielder, pitcher, and manager in Major League Baseball who played for several teams. He began his career with the New York Yankees, playing his first seven seasons there. 
During the period from 1926 to 1943, Chapman had more stolen bases than any other player, leading the American League four times. After twelve seasons, during which he batted .302 and led the AL in assists and double plays twice each, he spent two years in the minor leagues and returned to the majors as a National League pitcher for three seasons, becoming player-manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, his final team.
His playing reputation was eclipsed by the role he played in 1947 as manager of the Phillies, antagonizing Jackie Robinson by shouting racist epithets and opposing his presence on a major league team on the basis of Robinson's race with unsportsmanlike conduct that proved an embarrassment for his team. He was later fired that season due to his racist views and never managed another team.

Bob Skinner

Robert Ralph Skinner (born October 3, 1931) is an American former professional baseball outfielder / first baseman, manager, coach, and scout, who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for three National League (NL) teams. In all, Skinner spent over 50 years in the game.

Gavvy Cravath

Clifford Carlton "Gavvy" Cravath (March 23, 1881 – May 23, 1963), also nicknamed "Cactus", was an American right fielder and right-handed batter in Major League Baseball who played primarily for the Philadelphia Phillies. One of the sport's most prolific power hitters of the dead-ball era, in the seven years from 1913 to 1920 he led the National League in home runs six times, in runs batted in, total bases and slugging percentage twice each, and in hits, runs and walks once each. He led the NL in several offensive categories in 1915 as the Phillies won the first pennant in the team's 33-year history, and he held the team's career home run record from 1917 to 1924. However, he played his home games at Baker Bowl, a park that was notoriously favorable to batting statistics. Cravath hit 92 career homers at Baker Bowl while he had 25 homers in all his games away from home.

Hugh Duffy

Hugh Duffy (November 26, 1866 – October 19, 1954) was an American outfielder and manager in Major League Baseball. He was a player or player-manager for the Chicago White Stockings, Chicago Pirates, Boston Reds, Boston Beaneaters, Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies between 1888 and 1906. He had his best years with the Beaneaters, including the 1894 season, when he set the MLB single-season record for batting average (.440).
He also managed the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox and spent several seasons coaching in collegiate baseball and in the minor leagues. Later in life, he spent many years as a scout for the Red Sox. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945. He worked for Boston until 1953. He died of heart problems the next year.

Pat Moran

Patrick Joseph Moran (February 7, 1876 – March 7, 1924) was an American professional baseball player and manager. He was a catcher in Major League Baseball from 1901 to 1914. Then he became a manager and led two teams to their first-ever modern-era National League championships: the 1915 Philadelphia Phillies and the 1919 Cincinnati Reds. Moran's 1919 Reds also captured their first World Series championship.

Bill Shettsline

William Joseph Shettsline (October 25, 1863 – February 22, 1933) was a baseball manager for the Philadelphia Phillies of the National League from 1898 to 1902. He was club secretary when, upon the firing of George Stallings, he was given the managerial reins.In his five seasons at the helm, Shettsline posted a 367–302 record, with his best season in 1899. However, the team's 94–58 record that year was only good enough for third place in the National League.After the end of his term as manager, Shettsline owned the team from 1905 to 1909. Shettsline also spent some time as the team's business manager after he sold the team.Shettsline died in his homeland of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the age of 69.

John Vukovich

John Christopher Vukovich (July 31, 1947 – March 8, 2007), nicknamed "Vuk" or "Johnny Vuk", was an American professional baseball utility infielder, manager, and coach in Major League Baseball (MLB), best known for his years with the Philadelphia Phillies. He played in parts of ten seasons between 1970 and 1981 for the Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, and Milwaukee Brewers. Vukovich is also known for recording the lowest career MLB batting average (BA) (.161) of any non-pitcher with 500 or more at bats (AB).
