List Rules Vote for your favorite Philip Seymour Hoffman movies, regardless of critic reviews or how big the role was.

The best Philip Seymour Hoffman movies of all time prove that he was one of the greatest actors ever, excelling in both comedic and dramatic roles. Hoffman was active from the 1990s all the way up to his death in 2014. His highest grossing movies have been well-received at the box office as well, as his lifetime box office gross exceeded $2.4 billion.

Born in Rochester, New York, Hoffman and his siblings were raised mainly by their mother, a family court judge. Since watching a stage production of All My Sons at age 12, Hoffman was enthralled by acting. Later, he joined a drama club and attended New York University as a drama student. It’s no wonder that some of the best Philip Seymour Hoffman movies are dramas.

Following graduation from NYU, Hoffman worked in off-Broadway stage productions and had small film roles throughout the ‘90s. It wasn’t until the 2000s that he experienced critical success in both film and on stage. On the movie screen, his breakout role was as Truman Capote in the 2005 film Capote. In fact, it is considered to be one of the best Philip Seymour Hoffman movies by critics.

Unfortunately, he passed away in 2014 from a drug overdose. It came unexpectedly as it was reported that he had his drug use under control. He had two movies released posthumously, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.
