But the one thing that the franchise continues to chase is its first NBA championship. Historically, the Suns featured a high flying offensive attack. Phoenix has taken part in some of the most memorable games in <a href="/crowdranked-list/the-greatest-power-forwards-in-nba-history?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">NBA history</a> featuring some of the greatest players of all time. A number of Suns players have made selected to the All-NBA First Team. Players like Connie Hawkins, Paul Westphal, and Dennis Johnson are examples from the Suns early years to have achieved that honor.Two of the greatest Suns players ever are Steve Nash and Charles Barkley.They are among the <a href="/crowdranked-list/top-nba-players-with-no-championships">greatest players to never win a championship</a>. Both won league MVP awards (Nash won it in back-to-back years in 2005 and 2006) and carried Phoenix deep into the playoffs. However, the Suns only made the NBA Finals once under Barkley and zero times with Nash. Both players were part of the most entertaining teams in the NBA. Their teams featured talented stars like Kevin Johnson, Amare Stoudemire and Shawn Marion, but ultimately, not even outstanding players like Nash and Barkley could push the Suns over the proverbial hump.Despite the number of outstanding players who have worn the Phoenix Suns uniform, none have been inducted into the Hall of Fame as a Suns player. Stephen John Nash  (born 7 February 1974) is a Canadian former professional basketball player who played 18 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was an eight-time NBA All-Star and a seven-time All-NBA selection. Twice, Nash was named the NBA Most Valuable Player while playing for the Phoenix Suns. He currently serves as senior advisor of the Canadian men's national team and as a player development consultant for the Golden State Warriors.
After a successful high school basketball career in British Columbia, Nash earned a scholarship to Santa Clara University in California. In his four seasons with the Broncos, the team made three NCAA Tournament appearances, and he was twice named the West Coast Conference (WCC) Player of the Year. Nash graduated from Santa Clara as the team's all-time leader in assists and was taken as the 15th pick in the 1996 NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns. He made minimal impact and was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 1998. By his fourth season with the Mavericks, he was voted to his first NBA All-Star Game and had earned his first All-NBA selection. Together with Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Finley, Nash led the Mavericks to the Western Conference Finals the following season. He became a free agent after the 2003–04 season and returned to the Phoenix Suns.
In the 2004–05 season, Nash led the Suns to the Western Conference Finals and was named the league's MVP. He was named MVP again in the 2005–06 season and was runner-up for a third consecutive MVP to Nowitzki in 2006–07. Named by ESPN in 2006 as the ninth-greatest point guard of all time, Nash led the league in assists and free-throw percentage at various points in his career. He is also ranked as one of the top players in NBA league history in three-point shooting, free-throw shooting, total assists, and assists per game.
Nash has been honoured for his contributions to various philanthropic causes. In 2006, he was named by Time as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2007 and invested to the order in 2016, and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws by the University of Victoria in 2008. Nash has been a co-owner of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC of Major League Soccer (MLS) since the team entered the league in 2011. From 2012 to 2019, he served as general manager of the Canadian men's national team, for whom he played from 1991 to 2003, making one Olympic appearance and being twice named FIBA AmeriCup MVP.



Kevin Johnson

Jason Kidd

Jason Frederick Kidd (born March 23, 1973) is an American professional basketball coach and former player who is an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Previously a point guard in the NBA, Kidd was a 10-time NBA All-Star, a five-time All-NBA First Team member, and a nine-time NBA All-Defensive Team member. He won an NBA Championship in 2011 as a member of the Dallas Mavericks, and was a two-time Olympic Gold Medal winner during his pro career, as part of Team USA in 2000 and 2008. He was inducted as a player into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Kidd played college basketball for the California Golden Bears and was drafted second overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the 1994 NBA draft. He was named co-NBA Rookie of the Year in his first season with the Mavericks. Then, from 1996 to 2001, Kidd played for the Phoenix Suns and later for the New Jersey Nets from 2001 to 2008. He led the Nets to two consecutive NBA Finals appearances in 2002 and 2003. In the middle of the 2007–08 season, Kidd was traded back to Dallas. At age 38, Kidd won his only NBA championship when Dallas defeated Miami in the 2011 NBA Finals. He finished his playing career in 2013 with the New York Knicks. The following season, he became the head coach of the Nets, who had relocated from New Jersey to Brooklyn. After one season, he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks, where he coached for four seasons until he was fired mid-season in 2018.
Kidd's ability to pass and rebound made him a regular triple-double threat, and he retired ranked third all-time in the NBA for regular season triple-doubles with a career total of 107 and third in playoff triple-doubles with a career total of 11. He ranks second on the NBA all-time lists in career assists and steals and ninth in 3-point field goals made.

Jeff Hornacek

Jeffrey John Hornacek (; born May 3, 1963) is an American professional basketball coach and former player. He most recently served as the head coach of the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played shooting guard in the NBA from 1986 through 2000.

Sam Cassell

Samuel James Cassell Sr. (born November 18, 1969) is a former professional basketball player and current assistant coach of the Los Angeles Clippers. Drafted 24th overall in the 1993 NBA draft out of Florida State University, Cassell played for eight different teams during his 15-year career. He was selected to the NBA All-Star Game and All-NBA Team once, both in the 2003–04 season. He played the point guard position.
In his first two seasons, he helped the Houston Rockets win back to back championships and won a third with the Boston Celtics in 2008, his last season. He also helped the Milwaukee Bucks and Minnesota Timberwolves reach the Conference Finals of the playoffs in 2001 and 2004 respectively, the latter's first-ever in franchise history, and helped the Los Angeles Clippers to their first-ever playoff series victory in 2006. Known for his mid-range jumpshot, Cassell often made clutch baskets late in the fourth quarter to help his team win games.

Goran Dragić

Goran Dragić (born 6 May 1986) is a Slovenian professional basketball player for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He plays at both the point guard and shooting guard positions. He played professional basketball in Slovenia and Spain before entering the NBA in 2008. Dragić has played for the Phoenix Suns twice, the Houston Rockets, and the Heat. He was an All-NBA Third Team selection and the NBA Most Improved Player with the Suns in 2014. He was named an NBA All-Star for the first time in 2018 with Miami. He led the Slovenian national team to its first EuroBasket title in 2017, while setting an all-time record for most points by a player in the final, also being named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Stephon Marbury

Stephon Xavier Marbury (born February 20, 1977) is an American former basketball player. He was selected out of Georgia Tech by the Milwaukee Bucks with the 4th overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft, but was traded shortly thereafter to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He played in the NBA from 1996 to 2009, also as a member of the New Jersey Nets, Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks and Boston Celtics. He was an NBA All-Star with the Suns in 2001 and 2003, and was voted into the All-NBA Third Team in 2000 and 2003. Marbury then played in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) from 2010 to 2018, winning three CBA championships with the Beijing Ducks in 2012, 2014 and 2015.

Paul Westphal

Paul Douglas Westphal (born November 30, 1950 - January 2, 2021) was an American retired basketball player and a former head coach with several National Basketball Association (NBA) and college teams.  Westphal has had a storied career in the NBA, both as a player and as a coach. As a player, he won an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics in the 1974 NBA Finals. In addition to being a five-time All-Star selection, from 1977 to 1981, Westphal earned three All-NBA First Team selections and one Second Team honor. Later, he returned to the Finals in 1993 as head coach of the Phoenix Suns. He was also head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics and the Sacramento Kings. He returned to his home state of California when he was the men's basketball head coach at Pepperdine University from 2001 to 2006. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.

Eric Bledsoe

Eric Bledsoe (born December 9, 1989) is an American professional basketball player for the New Orleans Pelicans of the National Basketball Association (NBA).  He plays the point guard position, but can also play shooting guard. After a season with Kentucky, he was selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the 18th overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft and subsequently traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. Bledsoe had a four-year tenure with the Phoenix Suns between 2013 and 2017, before being traded to the Bucks.

Anfernee Deon "Penny" Hardaway (born July 18, 1971) is an American college basketball coach for the Memphis Tigers and a former professional player. Hardaway played in the National Basketball Association (NBA), where as an exceptionally tall point guard, he was an NBA All-Star in his first few seasons. Hardaway was most productive in his years with the Orlando Magic, and his early years with the Phoenix Suns.  Injuries began to plague him and diminish his effectiveness.  He played for the New York Knicks from 2004 to 2006, and finished his career in 2007 with the Miami Heat, which reunited him with former Magic teammate Shaquille O’Neal.

Dennis Johnson

Dennis Wayne Johnson (September 18, 1954 – February 22, 2007), nicknamed "DJ", was an American  professional basketball player for the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Seattle SuperSonics, Phoenix Suns and Boston Celtics and coach of the Los Angeles Clippers. He was an alumnus of Dominguez High School, Los Angeles Harbor College and Pepperdine University.A prototypical late bloomer, Johnson overcame early struggles and had a successful NBA playing career. Drafted 29th overall in 1976 by the Seattle SuperSonics, Johnson began his professional career as a shooting guard. He eventually led the Sonics to their only NBA championship in 1979, winning the Finals MVP Award. After a short stint with the Phoenix Suns, he became the starting point guard for the Boston Celtics, with whom he won two more championships. Johnson was voted into five All-Star Teams, one All-NBA First and one Second Team, and nine consecutive All-Defensive First and Second Teams. Apart from his reputation as a defensive stopper, Johnson was known as a clutch player who made several decisive plays in NBA playoffs history.The Celtics franchise has retired Johnson's #3 jersey, which hangs from the rafters of the TD Garden, the home arena of the team. On April 5, 2010, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame officially announced that Johnson had been posthumously elected to the Hall. He was formally inducted on August 13. He is considered by several sports journalists to be one of the most underrated players of all time.

Danny Ainge

Daniel Ray Ainge (born March 17, 1959) is an American basketball executive and former professional basketball and baseball player. Ainge is currently the general manager and President of Basketball Operations for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Ainge was an outstanding high school athlete. At Brigham Young University, he was named national basketball college player of the year and won the John R. Wooden Award for the most outstanding male college basketball player. While in college, Ainge also played parts of three seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball (MLB), mostly as a second baseman. He was then drafted into the NBA by the Celtics. Ainge completed 14 seasons, playing for the Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns, primarily as a shooting guard. He went on to coach the Suns for three seasons before joining management of the Celtics, with whom Ainge has three NBA Championships to his credit (two as a player, one as President/GM).
He is the only person to be named a high school first team All-American in American football, basketball, and baseball.

Gail Goodrich

Gail Charles Goodrich Jr. (born April 23, 1943) is an American retired professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is best known for scoring a then record 42 points for UCLA in the 1965 NCAA championship game vs. Michigan, and his part in the Los Angeles Lakers' 1971–72 season. During that season the team won a still-record 33 consecutive games, posted what was at the time the best regular season record in NBA history, and also won the franchise's first NBA championship since relocating to Los Angeles. Goodrich was the leading scorer on that team. He is also acclaimed for leading UCLA to its first two national championships under the legendary coach John Wooden, the first in 1963–64 being a perfect 30-0 season when he played with teammate Walt Hazzard. In 1996, 17 years after his retirement from professional basketball, Goodrich was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Ricky Rubio

Ricard Rubio i Vives (born October 21, 1990) is a Spanish professional basketball player for the Minnesota Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Rubio became the youngest player ever to play in the Spanish ACB League on October 15, 2005, at age 14.  On June 25, 2009, he was drafted with the fifth pick in the first round of the 2009 NBA draft by the Timberwolves, making him the first player born in the 1990s to be drafted by the NBA. The Timberwolves had an agreement in principle with his former Spanish team, DKV Joventut, to buy out his contract, but Rubio backed out of the deal. On August 31, 2009, Joventut traded the rights to Rubio to FC Barcelona, and Rubio signed a six-year contract with FC Barcelona the following day. In 2011, Rubio joined the Minnesota Timberwolves, and spent six seasons in Minnesota before being traded to the Jazz in June 2017.

Charlie Scott

Charles Thomas Scott (born December 15, 1948) is an American former professional basketball player. He played two seasons in the now-defunct American Basketball Association (ABA) and eight seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Scott was an Olympic Gold Medalist and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.

Isaiah Thomas

Isaiah Jamar Thomas (born February 7, 1989) is an American professional basketball player for the Washington Wizards of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The 5-foot-9-inch (1.75 m) point guard played three years of college basketball for the Washington Huskies and was a three-time all-conference selection in the Pac-10. After electing to forgo his senior year of college, Thomas was selected by the Sacramento Kings with the final pick in the 2011 NBA draft. He spent three seasons with the Kings before joining the Phoenix Suns in 2014. Thomas was traded to the Boston Celtics in February 2015 and was named an NBA All-Star in 2016 and 2017 and received All-NBA Team honors in 2017 after leading the Celtics to the first seed in the Eastern Conference. In August 2017, he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, and at midseason he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. In July 2018, Thomas joined the Denver Nuggets. In July 2019, he signed with the Washington Wizards.

Negele Knight

Negele Oscar Knight (born March 6, 1967) is a retired American professional basketball player who was selected by the Phoenix Suns in the second round (31st overall) of the 1990 NBA Draft. Knight played for the Suns, San Antonio Spurs, Portland Trail Blazers, Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors in six NBA seasons. His best year as a professional came during the 1993-94 season as a member of the Spurs, when he appeared in 64 games averaging 9.3 ppg. He played collegiately at the University of Dayton, ending his NBA career with the Toronto Raptors in 1999.

Elliot Perry

Elliot Lamonte Perry (born March 28, 1969) is a retired American professional basketball player.
The 6'0" (1.83 m) point guard from Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis), was selected with the tenth pick of the second round (37th overall) by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 1991 NBA Draft. He played ten games in 1991-92 for the Clippers before being waived and subsequently signed for the rest of the season by the Charlotte Hornets. He then moved on to Continental Basketball Association for two years before returning to the NBA, most notably with the Phoenix Suns where in 1994-95 he was voted runner-up as the NBA's Most Improved Player.
He rounded out his NBA career in 2002 with his hometown Memphis Grizzlies for whom he played just two games after signing a 10-day contract. He scored 11 points in the 2 games.
Perry is also known as "Socks" because of the high long socks he wore during his college and NBA career. A quick and slashing player in college, his ability to alter his shot in mid-air to draw a foul from his defender made him very dangerous to defend. Lack of quality supporting players forced Perry to carry the U of M team on his skill. During his senior year Anfernee Hardaway had been scheduled to be his teammate, but Hardaway's academic qualifying woes ensured he was red-shirted, and these two never were able to team up.

Don Buse

Donald R. Buse (born August 10, 1950) is a retired American professional basketball player.
A 6'4" (1.93 m) guard from the University of Evansville, Buse played 13 seasons (1972–1985) in the American Basketball Association and National Basketball Association as a member of the Indiana Pacers, the Phoenix Suns, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Kansas City Kings.

Mike James

Michael "Mike" James is an American professional basketball player who plays for Laboral Kutxa of the Liga ACB. He was a high school basketball standout playing for Grant High School in Portland. He played college basketball at Eastern Arizona College and Lamar University.

Ron Lee

Ronald Henry Lee (born November 2, 1952) was an All-American basketball player for the University of Oregon, and epitomized the "Kamikaze Kids" under coach Dick Harter with his all-out, fearless hustle and relentless desire to win.  Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Lee played four seasons for the Ducks between 1972 and 1976.  The Phoenix Suns made him the tenth selection in the NBA draft in 1976. Despite not playing football in high school and college, the NFL's San Diego Chargers also made him a 12th round selection in the 1976 NFL draft. In the NBA, Lee was named to the 1977 NBA All-Rookie Team and led the NBA in steals the following season.  Overall, Lee had a solid, but not spectacular career as a reserve, and became a fan favorite because of his effort on the court.
Ron Lee is still the all-time leading scorer for the University of Oregon with 2,085 points in his four seasons of play.  He ranks second in career assists with 572, first in field goals (838), and fifth in free throws made (409).  He was first-team All-Pac-8  in all four seasons with the Ducks, and made numerous All-American lists during his final three seasons. Lee was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.
After ending his NBA career, Lee played for 3 years in Italy.

Phil Pressey

Phillip Michael "Phil" Pressey is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association. As a junior playing point guard for the 2012–13 Missouri Tigers men's basketball team, Pressey announced on April 10, 2013, that he would forgo his senior season of eligibility at Missouri and enter the 2013 NBA draft instead. He led the 2011–12 Big 12 Conference in assists, steals and assist to turnover ratio and was a 2011–12 All-Big 12 team selection as a result. He shares the Southeastern Conference single-game assists record and was the 2012 SEC Preseason Player of the Year. He earned 2012–13 All-SEC First team selection and was the conference assist champion. He earned Associated Press 2013 All-American honorable mention recognition. He holds Missouri single-game, single-season and career assists records and numerous Missouri steals records, including career steals.
Pressey was a high school basketball All-state selection by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and helped his team achieve 2009 and 2010 Southwest Preparatory Conference state championships in basketball.

Clem Haskins

Clem Smith Haskins (born August 11, 1943) is an American retired college and professional basketball player and college basketball coach. In the fall of 1963, he and star player Dwight Smith became the first black athletes to integrate the Western Kentucky University (WKU) basketball program. This put Western Kentucky at the forefront to integrate college basketball in the South.Haskins served 13 years (1986–1999) as head coach of the University of Minnesota's men's basketball team, but was forced to resign due to his part in the University of Minnesota basketball scandal. Due to his actions in the scandal, he was given a seven-year show cause penalty which effectively ended his coaching career.

Howard Eisley

Howard Jonathan Eisley (born December 4, 1972) is an American retired professional basketball player and coach. Born in Detroit, Eisley played college basketball at Boston College and was drafted in 1994 by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Eisley spent twelve seasons in the NBA, six with the Utah Jazz (1995–2000, 2004–2005) and the other six with seven other teams.

Isaiah Canaan (born May 21, 1991) is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was an All-American college player at Murray State University.
