The storied history of Penn State has resulted in national championships and a loyal, devoted fan and alumni base who proudly call themselves &quot;Penn Staters.&quot; However, the players aren&#39;t slouches either. Franco Harris and Jack Ham are two Hall of Fame players who attended Penn State and were forces on the gridiron in both college and the NFL. In the 1990s, players like Kerry Collins, Ki-Jana Carter, and Kyle Brady bridged the program&#39;s success into the next generation, while the 2000s saw running back Larry Johnson carry the team to greatness.

Dan Marino

Daniel Constantine Marino Jr. (born September 15, 1961) is an American former football quarterback who played seventeen seasons for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). After a successful college career at Pittsburgh and being named First-team All-American in 1981, Marino was the last quarterback taken in the first round of the quarterback class of 1983. Marino held or currently holds dozens of NFL records associated with the quarterback position, and despite never being on a Super Bowl-winning team, he is recognized as one of the greatest quarterbacks, and generally considered to be among the best pure passers in American football history.Best remembered for his quick release and powerful arm, Marino helped the Dolphins become consistent postseason contenders, leading them to the playoffs ten times and one Super Bowl appearance in XIX, although a title victory ultimately eluded him during his career. Marino is considered by many to be one of the greatest players to never win a Super Bowl and has the most career victories of quarterbacks to not win a title at 155 (147–93 in regular season and 8–10 in playoffs).
A nine-time Pro Bowl selection, eight-time first or second team All-Pro, and All-AFC six times, Marino was voted NFL Rookie of the Year by several media outlets. The following season in 1984, Marino was the NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP), when he set single season records of 5,084 passing yards, 48 touchdown passes, nine 300-yard passing games, and four 400-yard passing games. He was voted the 1994 NFL Comeback Player of the Year, and the 1998 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. At the time of his retirement, Marino held more than 40 NFL single season and career passing records (many of which have since been surpassed), including career passing attempts (8,358), completions (4,967), passing yards (61,361), and touchdown passes (420). Marino was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003, inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005 in his first year of eligibility, and is currently one of only three former Miami Dolphins to have his jersey number (no. 13) retired.

Matt Cavanaugh

Matthew Andrew Cavanaugh (born October 27, 1956) is an American football coach and former player who is the Senior Offensive Assistant for the Washington Redskins of the National Football League (NFL). He is a former American football quarterback in the NFL who played from 1978 to 1991. In the course of his career as a professional football player, he earned two Super Bowl rings. Since his retirement, Cavanaugh has worked as an offensive coach and coordinator, for teams including the San Francisco 49ers, the Chicago Bears, and the Baltimore Ravens, where he earned a third Super Bowl ring as a coach.

Tyler Palko

Tyler Palko (born August 9, 1983) is a former American football quarterback. He does weekly broadcasts for Pittsburgh Panthers Television on Comcast and lives in Scottsdale, Arizona.Palko was the starting quarterback at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) from 2004 to 2006. The left-handed thrower was not selected in the 2007 NFL Draft, but was signed by the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent. After spending most of the 2007 season on the Saints practice squad and occasionally the active roster, Palko was waived and did not play in a game in 2008. He joined the Arizona Cardinals on a future contract in December 2008, but was waived again in September 2009. Palko then joined the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League before receiving a release to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers in November 2009. He signed a future contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2010, but spent most of his time on the team's practice squad before joining the active roster near the end of the season. After entering the 2011 season as the backup to Matt Cassel, Palko was elevated to starting quarterback after Cassel broke his hand.

Gregory Alexander Van Pelt (born May 1, 1970) is an American football coach and former player who is the quarterbacks coach for the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League (NFL).

Rod Rutherford

Rod Rutherford (born December 12, 1980) is an American football coach and former quarterback. Rutherford spent time on both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Carolina Panthers rosters, mostly as a practice squad player. Rutherford entered the NFL when he was signed by the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2004. He won a Super Bowl ring with the Steelers the following year in Super Bowl XL as a practice team player over the Seattle Seahawks.

John Congemi is a former Canadian Football League quarterback and current college football analyst for ESPNU and the Big East Network.
Congemi played quarterback for the Pittsburgh Panthers football team during 1982–1986. He finished second all time in passing yards and led his team to the 1984 Fiesta Bowl. He won the game's MVP award, despite losing the game 28–23.After college Congemi played in the CFL for the Toronto Argonauts, Ottawa Rough Riders, Saskatchewan Roughriders. In 1993, he also played part of the 1993 season with the Miami Hooters of the Arena Football League. After the stint, he went back to the CFL to play for the Baltimore Stallions in 1994.
After retiring, Congemi returned to his native Florida, where he worked as a football analyst for SportsChannel Florida and WQAM. Congemi served as a color commentator for the Big East Network from 2000 to 2011. He has been calling ESPNU games since the network began in 2005.

Richard Charles Trocano is a former American football quarterback in the National Football League. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 11th round of the 1981 NFL Draft. He played college football at Pittsburgh.
Trocano also played for the Cleveland Browns.

Dave Havern

David Havern is an American football coach and former player.  He was a quarterback for the University of Pittsburgh football team in the 1960s, a Dapper Dan award winner, who would hold the school passing records before the arrival of Dan Marino in 1979. More recently, Havern was a mentor to St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger when Bulger was attending Pitt's rival, West Virginia.
Havern is currently the head football coach of the Shady Side Academy Indians in Pittsburgh.

Frederick Henry Mazurek (born March 21, 1943 in Republic, Pennsylvania) is a former American football flanker in the National Football League for the Washington Redskins.  Fred received a scholarship from Pitt and was the starting quarterback for the Pitt Panthers from 1961 to 1965.  They played for the national championship in 1963 against Navy and lost 7 to 6 (Roger Staubach was the quarterback for Navy).
He also played baseball and was an All-American center fielder for the baseball team at the University of Pittsburgh.

Matthew Lytle (born September 4, 1975) is a former American football quarterback of the National Football League. He was signed by the Seattle Seahawks as a street free agent in 2000. He played college football at Pittsburgh.
