Bill Walton

A list of the best Portland Trail Blazers of all time. The only major sports franchise in Rip City, the Trail Blazers have been a source of civic pride in Portland since its inception in 1970. The Blazers notoriously have the worst draft luck in the NBA. But it wasn't always that way. Though the team had solid players in its early years, no one would could compare to when the team draft Bill Walton. The UCLA star is considered one of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/greatest-centers-of-all-time">best centers ever</a>. Along with the addition of Maurice Lucas, the Blazers became one of the best teams in the NBA. Portland won the NBA championship in 1977 and seemed like it was on the cusp of a dynasty until Walton broke his foot.Despite losing Walton, the Blazers were consistent winners throughout its history. They were helped by the play of the greatest players in its history. Hall of Fame guard Clyde Drexler led the team in the 1980s and players like Terry Porter and Jerome Kersey were other excellent players who contributed to those winning teams. Though the team made a huge mistake in drafting Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan in 1984, the Blazers made two NBA Finals appearances in 1990 and 1992.&nbsp;The end of the 1990s saw the team's next wave of success. Behind All Star power forward Rasheed Wallace, the Trailblazers were a consistent threat to win the NBA championship. As great of a player as Wallace was, the team couldn't quite get over the proverbial hump.This is a list of the best Portland Trail Blazers of all time. William Theodore Walton III (born November 5, 1952) is an American retired basketball player and television sportscaster. Walton played for John Wooden and the UCLA Bruins in the early 1970s, winning three successive College Player of the Year Awards. He led the UCLA  Bruins to two NCAA Championships in 1972 and 1973. He had a prominent career in the National Basketball Association (NBA), winning an NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) and two NBA championships. His professional career was significantly hampered by multiple foot injuries, requiring numerous surgeries. Walton was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993

Arvydas Sabonis

Arvydas Romas Sabonis (Lithuanian pronunciation: ​[ˈaːrviːdaːs ˈsaːboːnʲɪs]; born December 19, 1964) is a Lithuanian retired professional basketball player and businessman. Recognized as one of the best European players of all time, he won the Euroscar six times, and the Mr. Europa Award twice. He played in a variety of leagues, and spent seven seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA), in the United States. Playing the center position, Sabonis won a gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics, in South Korea, for the Soviet Union, and later earned bronze medals at the 1992 Olympic Games and 1996 Olympic Games, while representing Lithuania. He retired from professional basketball in 2005. Sabonis was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers, in the first round of the 1986 NBA draft, but he did not play his first NBA game until the age of 31, in 1995.
Sabonis is considered one of the best big man passers, as well as one of the best overall centers, in the history of the game. Bill Walton once called Sabonis, "a 7 ft 3 in (2.21 m) Larry Bird", due to his unique court vision, shooting range, rugged in-game mentality, and versatility.On August 20, 2010, Sabonis was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame, in recognition of his great play in international competition. On April 4, 2011, Sabonis was named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and he was inducted on August 12, 2011. At that time, he was the tallest player to ever enter the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame; one year later, he would be surpassed by 7 ft 4 in (2.24 m) Ralph Sampson. On October 24, 2011, Sabonis was voted as the next President of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation, replacing Vladas Garastas, who had led the LBF since 1991. He resigned from the position on October 2, 2013, but came back to it on October 10, 2013.

Jusuf Nurkić

Jusuf Nurkić (born August 23, 1994) is a Bosnian professional basketball player who currently plays for the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association. Standing at 6 ft 11 in tall and weighing 280 lb the center was selected by the Chicago Bulls with the 16th overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft. He also represents the Bosnia and Herzegovina national basketball team internationally. On 25 March 2019, Nurkić suffered a compound fracture of his left tibia and fibula in the second overtime of the Trail Blazers' 148–144 win over the Brooklyn Nets. According to a team press release he has no expected return date. Nurkić made 32 points and 16 rebounds before the injury.

LaMarcus Aldridge

LaMarcus Nurae Aldridge (born July 19, 1985) is an American professional basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The power forward played college basketball for two seasons with the Texas Longhorns. Aldridge was selected second overall in the 2006 NBA draft. After spending nine seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers, he signed with the Spurs in 2015. He has been selected to five All-NBA teams and is a seven-time NBA All-Star. He is widely known for his signature fadeaway jump shot.

Kevin Duckworth

Kevin James Duckworth (April 1, 1964 – August 25, 2008) was an American professional basketball player at center in the National Basketball Association (NBA). A native of Illinois, he played college basketball at Eastern Illinois University before being drafted in 1986 in the second round by the San Antonio Spurs. Before completing his rookie season with the Spurs, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers where he spent most of his six seasons and was named the NBA's Most Improved Player and a two-time All-Star. After playing with three more teams he retired in 1997 and returned to Oregon where he would later work for the Trail Blazers' organization.

Mychal Thompson

Mychal George Thompson (born January 30, 1955) is a Bahamian former basketball player. The No. 1 overall pick in the 1978 NBA draft, Thompson played the power forward and center positions for the University of Minnesota and the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers, San Antonio Spurs, and Los Angeles Lakers. Thompson won two NBA championships with the Lakers during their Showtime era in the 1980s. He is the father of basketball players Klay Thompson and Mychel Thompson, and baseball player Trayce Thompson.

Maurice Lucas

Maurice Lucas (February 18, 1952 – October 31, 2010) was an American professional basketball player. The first two years of his postcollegiate career were spent in the American Basketball Association (ABA) with the Spirits of St. Louis and Kentucky Colonels. He then played twelve seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the Portland Trail Blazers, New Jersey Nets, New York Knickerbockers, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers and Seattle SuperSonics. The starting power forward on the Trail Blazers' 1976–77 NBA Championship team, he was nicknamed The Enforcer because of his primary role on the court which was best exemplified in Game 2 of the NBA Finals that season.

Rasheed Wallace

Rasheed Abdul Wallace (born September 17, 1974) is an American former professional basketball player who played 16 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). A native of Philadelphia, Wallace played college basketball at the University of North Carolina before moving on to the NBA in 1995.
Originally selected by the Washington Bullets (now known as the Washington Wizards) as the fourth pick in the 1995 NBA draft, Wallace was named to the All-Rookie second team following his first season. He was then traded to the Portland Trail Blazers after the season. With Portland he was a key member of the Trail Blazers team that made it to the Western Conference Finals in 1999 and 2000, and was an NBA All-Star in 2000 and 2001. Wallace averaged a career best 19.4 points per game in 2002 for the Trail Blazers.
During the 2003–04 season Portland traded him to the Atlanta Hawks where he played one game before he was traded to the Detroit Pistons. With the Pistons, Wallace won the NBA championship in 2004, but lost the NBA Finals in the following season. Individually, Wallace was an NBA All-Star in 2006 and 2008. After the 2008–09 season, Wallace left the Pistons as a free agent and signed with the Boston Celtics, where he played until retiring in 2010. He returned to sign a one-year deal to play for the New York Knicks in 2012. On April 17, 2013, Wallace announced his second retirement.
Wallace holds the single-season record for technical fouls. In the 2000–01 season, Wallace received 41 technical fouls over a span of 80 games, about one technical foul for every two games.

Brian Grant

Brian Wade Grant (born March 5, 1972) is a retired American basketball player. He played the power forward and center positions for five teams during 12 seasons in the National Basketball Association. He was known for his tenacious rebounding and blue-collar defense. During his career, he played with the Sacramento Kings (where he made First Team All-Rookie in the 1994–95 season), Portland Trail Blazers, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns.

Joel Przybilla (; born October 10, 1979) is an American retired professional basketball player who played the center position for 13 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Marcus Camby

Marcus Dion Camby (born March 22, 1974) is a American retired professional basketball player who played 17 seasons in the National Basketball Association. He was named Defensive Player of the Year during the 2006–07 NBA season, leading the league in blocked shots per game. Camby is also a four-time member of the NBA All-Defensive Team and is 12th on the NBA's all-time career blocks list.

Robin Lopez

Robin Byron Lopez (born April 1, 1988) is an American professional basketball player for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was selected with the 15th pick in the 2008 NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns, was traded to the New Orleans Hornets in 2012 and was traded to Portland in 2013. He played college basketball for the Stanford Cardinal alongside his twin brother Brook Lopez, who currently plays for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Zach Randolph

Zachary McKenley Randolph (born July 16, 1981) is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Nicknamed Z-Bo, the two-time NBA All-Star played college basketball for Michigan State University before being drafted in the 2001 NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. He has played for five teams over the course of his professional career, making the All-NBA Third Team in 2011 with the Grizzlies.

Lloyd Neal

Lloyd Neal (born December 10, 1950) is an American former professional basketball player born in Talbotton, Georgia.
A 6'7" center/forward from Tennessee State University, Neal spent his entire professional career (1972–1979) with the National Basketball Association's Portland Trail Blazers.  Though undersized for his position, he endeared himself to fans with his hard work and tenacity, and he averaged a double-double (13.4 points, 11.8 rebounds) during the 1972–73 NBA season.  After his career was cut short by a knee injury in 1979, the Blazers retired his #36 jersey.  He finished college in 1980 and moved on to a long career with the Internal Revenue Service in Portland, where he's worked since 1985.

Hassan Whiteside

Hassan Niam Whiteside (born June 13, 1989) is an American professional basketball player for the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Marshall Thundering Herd before being selected in the second round by the Sacramento Kings in the 2010 NBA draft. After joining the Miami Heat in 2014, Whiteside was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2016, when he also led the NBA in blocks. He led the league in rebounding in 2017.

Meyers Patrick Leonard (born February 27, 1992), nicknamed "The Hammer", is an American professional basketball player for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Illinois Fighting Illini before being selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the 11th overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft. He also is a content creator for FaZe Clan in his spare time and streams on Twitch.

Dale Davis

Elliott Lydell "Dale" Davis (born March 25, 1969) is an American former professional basketball player who played center and power forward. During his playing days, he was listed at 6'11" and 252 pounds.
Davis was drafted by the Indiana Pacers with the 13th pick of the 1991 NBA Draft, and spent the first nine years of his career with them. He quickly established himself as the team's starting power forward, and was the workhorse of the Pacers' outstanding teams in the mid-1990s. He routinely averaged double-digits in points and near double-digits in rebounds throughout his Pacers career, and left the franchise as the team's all-time rebounds leader in their NBA era. (The Pacers were an original member of the American Basketball Association for several years before joining the NBA.)
Following the 1999-2000 season, in which Davis was named to the All-Star team and the Pacers made it to the NBA Finals, the organization decided it was time to rebuild with a younger group of players. They traded Davis to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Jermaine O'Neal and Joe Kleine, and O'Neal soon went on to become the Pacers' franchise player.
Davis spent four years with the Blazers, putting up much the same numbers as he did with the Pacers—roughly 8 points and 8 rebounds per game. He played 313 games for the Blazers, starting 235 times.
On July 20, 2004, the Blazers traded Davis and Dan Dickau to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Nick Van Exel.
On February 24, 2005, Davis was traded again, along with guard Speedy Claxton, to the New Orleans Hornets for guard Baron Davis. Davis was released soon afterward, and signed with his first team, the Pacers, on March 4, 2005. He immediately started in place of the injured Jermaine O'Neal, earning one point, seven rebounds and two blocked shots in a Pacers' road victory against the Blazers.
In all, Davis started all 25 games he played for the Pacers in the 2004-05 regular season, contributing 6.9 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.32 blocks per game.
In June 2006, he became a co-owner in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series when he bought interest in R&J Racing.On August 26, 2005, Davis signed as a free agent with the Detroit Pistons. He played with the Pistons for 2 years, retiring from basketball after the 2006-2007 NBA season.
In August 2006, Davis was shocked with a stun gun as Miami Beach police arrested him for assaulting a police officer, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. In December 2006, Davis was acquitted of all charges.

Zach Collins (born November 19, 1997) is an American professional basketball player for the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association. He played college basketball for the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

Sam Bowie

Samuel Paul Bowie (born March 17, 1961) is a former American professional basketball player. A national sensation in high school and outstanding collegian and Olympic team member, Bowie's professional promise was undermined by repeated injuries to his legs and feet. In spite of the setbacks, the 7 ft 1 in (2.16 m) and 235 lb (107 kg) center played ten seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Projected as a solid first rounder in the 1984 NBA draft, Bowie was chosen by the Portland Trail Blazers as the second selection, ahead of Hall of Famer Michael Jordan, due to Portland already having drafted Clyde Drexler just a year before.



Tom Owens

Thomas William Owens (born June 28, 1949) is a retired American professional basketball player.
A 6'10" center born in the Bronx, New York played for LaSalle Academy in 1967 when they won the NYC CHSAA championship  and from the University of South Carolina, Owens played five seasons (1971–1976) in the American Basketball Association and seven seasons (1976–1983) in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Carolina Cougars, Memphis Pros, Memphis Sounds, Spirits of St. Louis, Indiana Pacers, Kentucky Colonels, San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets, Portland Trail Blazers, and Detroit Pistons.  He scored 9,898 points and grabbed 5,985 rebounds in his ABA/NBA career.
Late in his career, Owens was involved in one of the most one-sided trades in NBA history.  After the 1980–81 season, the Blazers traded him to the Pacers and got the Pacers' 1984 draft pick in return.  Owens was traded to the Pistons after the season and retired a year later.  Four years later, the Pacers finished with the worst record in the Eastern Conference.  However, because of the trade, the Pacers were left as bystanders in one of the deepest drafts ever, featuring such future stars as Michael Jordan, Sam Bowie, Hakeem Olajuwon, Sam Perkins, Charles Barkley and John Stockton.  The pick acquired from Indiana turned out to be the one the Blazers famously used to select Bowie while Jordan was still available.
Owens was inducted into the University of South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.  He led the ACC in rebounding for all three years of his eligibility.  At that time, freshmen were not allowed to play on the varsity squad.  He scored the winning basket to give the Gamecocks their one and only ACC Tournament Championship in 1971. Owens has one son Thomas William Owens Jr that lives in Hilton Head South Carolina he was born on October 21, 1972.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim

Shareef Abdur-Rahim (born December 11, 1976) is an American retired professional basketball player who is currently president of the NBA G League. He was also the director of player personnel for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the general manager of the Reno Bighorns, the Kings' minor-league affiliate. He last played in the NBA for the Kings. On the basketball court, he played both forward or center positions. Abdur-Rahim was a standout player during his high school days. He left University of California, Berkeley after one year to enter the 1996 NBA draft.
In his early NBA career, Abdur-Rahim was the star of the Vancouver Grizzlies for five seasons. He was traded by the Grizzlies in 2001 and then played for the Atlanta Hawks and Portland Trail Blazers before joining his last team, the Sacramento Kings. Nicknamed "Reef", Abdur-Rahim was named an NBA All-Star in the 2001–02 season. He also played on the United States men's national basketball team that won the gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Prior to joining the Kings, despite the fact that he achieved solid statistics throughout his career, Abdur-Rahim shared the NBA record for most games played without making a playoff appearance. Following persistent injuries to his right knee, Abdur-Rahim announced his retirement from basketball on September 22, 2008.

Mason Plumlee

Mason Alexander Plumlee (born March 5, 1990) is an American professional basketball player for the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). As a freshman in 2009–10, he was a back-up forward for the Duke Blue Devils men's basketball team's national championship team, playing with his older brother Miles. He was a 2009 McDonald's All-American in high school. During his senior year at Duke, he also played with his younger brother Marshall. He was selected with the 22nd overall pick by the Brooklyn Nets in the 2013 NBA draft. Plumlee was also a member of the United States national team that competed in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Ed Davis

Edward Adam Davis (born June 5, 1989) is an American professional basketball player for the Utah Jazz of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played high school basketball at Benedictine High School in Richmond, Virginia. He is the son of former NBA player Terry Davis, who played 10 seasons (1989–2001) with the Miami Heat, Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets and Washington Wizards. He was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft by the Toronto Raptors.

Dale Schlueter

Dale Wayne Schlueter (November 12, 1945 – July 24, 2014) was an American professional basketball player born in Tacoma, Washington.
A 6'10" center from Colorado State University, Schlueter was selected by the San Francisco Warriors in the sixth round of the 1967 NBA draft and by the Houston Mavericks in the 1967 ABA Draft.
Schlueter played in the National Basketball Association from 1968 to 1978 as a member of the San Francisco Warriors, Portland Trail Blazers, Philadelphia 76ers, Atlanta Hawks, Buffalo Braves, and Phoenix Suns. He averaged 5.3 points and 5.2 rebounds over his career. He died of cancer on July 24, 2014.

Greg Oden

Gregory Wayne Oden Jr. (born January 22, 1988) is an American former professional basketball player. Oden, a 7 ft 0 in (2.13 m), 250-pound (110 kg) center, played college basketball at the Ohio State University for one season, during which the team was the Big Ten Champion and the tournament runner-up in the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship.
On June 28, 2007, Greg Oden was selected first overall in the 2007 NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. He underwent microfracture surgery of the knee in September 2007, and missed the entire 2007–08 NBA season as a result. He recovered and made his NBA debut on opening night 2008. In March 2012, he was waived from the Trail Blazers after a long history of injuries. He signed with the Miami Heat in August 2013, more than three years after last appearing in an NBA game, and played with the team through the 2014 NBA Playoffs.
After playing in the CBA during their 2015–16 season, Oden stated in October 2016 that he was done with basketball and would not be returning as a player. In July 2018, he played in The Basketball Tournament 2018. In May 2019, Oden was selected as the 7th overall pick in the 2019 Big3 Draft.
