Bill Walton

A list of the best Portland Trail Blazers of all time. The only major sports franchise in Rip City, the Trail Blazers have been a source of civic pride in Portland since its inception in 1970. The Blazers notoriously have the worst draft luck in the NBA. But it wasn't always that way. Though the team had solid players in its early years, no one would could compare to when the team draft Bill Walton. The UCLA star is considered one of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/greatest-centers-of-all-time">best centers ever</a>. Along with the addition of Maurice Lucas, the Blazers became one of the best teams in the NBA. Portland won the NBA championship in 1977 and seemed like it was on the cusp of a dynasty until Walton broke his foot.Despite losing Walton, the Blazers were consistent winners throughout its history. They were helped by the play of the greatest players in its history. Hall of Fame guard Clyde Drexler led the team in the 1980s and players like Terry Porter and Jerome Kersey were other excellent players who contributed to those winning teams. Though the team made a huge mistake in drafting Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan in 1984, the Blazers made two NBA Finals appearances in 1990 and 1992.&nbsp;The end of the 1990s saw the team's next wave of success. Behind All Star power forward Rasheed Wallace, the Trailblazers were a consistent threat to win the NBA championship. As great of a player as Wallace was, the team couldn't quite get over the proverbial hump.This is a list of the best Portland Trail Blazers of all time. Clyde Drexler

Clyde Austin Drexler (born June 22, 1962) is an American former professional basketball player who is the commissioner of the Big3  3-on-3 basketball league. Nicknamed "Clyde the Glide", he played 15 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA), spending a majority of his career with the Portland Trail Blazers before finishing with the Houston Rockets. He was a ten-time NBA All-Star and named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. Drexler won an NBA championship with Houston in 1995, and earned a gold medal on the 1992 United States Olympic team known as "The Dream Team". He was inducted twice into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, in 2004 for his individual career and in 2010 as a member of the "Dream Team". He currently serves as a color commentator for Houston Rockets home games.

Brandon Roy

Brandon Dawayne Roy (born July 23, 1984) is an American basketball coach and a former professional basketball player. Roy played six seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Portland Trail Blazers and Minnesota Timberwolves. He was selected sixth in the 2006 NBA draft, having completed four years playing for the Washington Huskies. His nickname was "B-Roy", but he was also referred to as "The Natural" by Trail Blazers announcer Brian Wheeler. On December 10, 2011, Roy announced his retirement from basketball due to a degenerative knee condition, though he returned in 2012 to play five games for the Timberwolves.Born in Seattle, Roy became known for his immediate impact on the Trail Blazers. Zach Randolph, then the team captain, was traded to the New York Knicks at the end of Roy's first season in 2006–07, which cleared the way for Roy to take on a leadership role on the team. That season, Roy won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in a near-unanimous vote. He was selected as a reserve to the 2008, 2009, and 2010 All-Star games. Roy played the most minutes of any Western Conference player, and tied for the most points in the West in the 2008 season, and he played the most minutes of any player during the 2009 season.

C. J. McCollum

Christian James McCollum (born September 19, 1991) is an American professional basketball player for the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). During his third year in the league in 2015–16, he was named the NBA Most Improved Player. McCollum played college basketball for the Lehigh Mountain Hawks and was the Patriot League Men's Basketball Player of the Year in both 2010 and 2012. He was selected by Portland with the 10th overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft. Following two seasons as a reserve, he became a full-time starter for the Trail Blazers, after making the decision to move to shooting guard.

Geoff Petrie

Geoffrey Michael Petrie (born April 17, 1948) is an American retired basketball player. A native of Pennsylvania, he played professional basketball in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Portland Trail Blazers where he won NBA Rookie of the Year in 1971. After retirement as a player he entered management, and was the President of Basketball Operations for the Sacramento Kings in the NBA until June 2013.

Jim Paxson

James Joseph Paxson (born July 9, 1957) is an American retired professional basketball player. A first round selection (12th overall) of the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1979 NBA draft, Paxson played for Portland and the Boston Celtics of the NBA from 1979–1990 and was twice an All-Star. Paxson served as general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers for six years and now works as a consultant with the Chicago Bulls where his brother John Paxson is an executive.

Wesley Matthews

Wesley Joel Matthews Jr. (born October 14, 1986) is an American professional basketball player for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Marquette Golden Eagles. He is the son of former NBA player Wes Matthews.

Lionel Hollins

Lionel Eugene Hollins (born October 19, 1953) is an American professional basketball coach and former player who is an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Steve Smith

Steven Delano Smith (born March 31, 1969) is an American retired basketball player who is currently a basketball analyst for Turner Sports. After a collegiate career with Michigan State, he played with several teams in his 14-season National Basketball Association career, including the Miami Heat, the Portland Trail Blazers and the San Antonio Spurs, but is perhaps best known for his five-year stint with the Atlanta Hawks which included an All-Star Game appearance in 1998. He won a championship with the Spurs in 2003.
Smith was widely regarded as an excellent three-point shooter, and is one of three players to make seven 3-pointers in a quarter.
He joined the USA men's national basketball team in the 1994 FIBA World Championship  winning the gold medal. He won another gold medal at the 1999 Tournament of the Americas and an Olympic gold medal with the USA men's national basketball team at the 2000 Summer Olympics with eleven other NBA All-Stars.

Danny Ainge

Daniel Ray Ainge (born March 17, 1959) is an American basketball executive and former professional basketball and baseball player. Ainge is currently the general manager and President of Basketball Operations for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Ainge was an outstanding high school athlete. At Brigham Young University, he was named national basketball college player of the year and won the John R. Wooden Award for the most outstanding male college basketball player. While in college, Ainge also played parts of three seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball (MLB), mostly as a second baseman. He was then drafted into the NBA by the Celtics. Ainge completed 14 seasons, playing for the Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns, primarily as a shooting guard. He went on to coach the Suns for three seasons before joining management of the Celtics, with whom Ainge has three NBA Championships to his credit (two as a player, one as President/GM).
He is the only person to be named a high school first team All-American in American football, basketball, and baseball.

Billy Ray Bates

Billy Ray Bates (born May 31, 1956) is a retired American professional basketball player. Bates played shooting guard at McAdams High in Mississippi and attended Kentucky State University.
Bates played four seasons in the National Basketball Association for the Portland Trail Blazers, Washington Bullets and Los Angeles Lakers. He also played overseas, in Switzerland, Mexico, Uruguay, and most notably in the Philippines for the Crispa Redmanizers and Ginebra San Miguel of the Philippine Basketball Association.
In the PBA, Bates had a legendary career with Crispa and is considered the greatest foreign player in that league's history.

Bonzi Wells

Gawen DeAngelo "Bonzi" Wells (born September 28, 1976) is an American former professional basketball player. He played college basketball at Ball State University and was drafted in the 1998 NBA Draft. In the NBA, Wells played for five teams from 1998 to 2008: the Portland Trail Blazers, Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, and New Orleans Hornets.

Rod Strickland

Rodney Strickland (born July 11, 1966) is an American basketball executive and retired National Basketball Association (NBA) player. He is currently the program manager for the NBA G League's professional path. Strickland played college basketball at DePaul University, where he was awarded All-American honors. He then enjoyed a long career in the NBA, playing from 1988 to 2005. Strickland was an assistant coach for the South Florida Bulls, under Orlando Antigua from 2014 to 2017.   He formerly served in an administrative role for the University of Kentucky basketball team under head coach John Calipari and was the director of basketball operations at the University of Memphis under Calipari. He is the godfather of current NBA player Kyrie Irving.

Johnny Davis

Johnny Reginald Davis (born October 21, 1955) is an American retired professional basketball player, and formerly an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played in the NBA with four teams in ten years from 1976 to 1986, winning an NBA championship in his rookie season (1976–77) with the Portland Trail Blazers. He also played for the Indiana Pacers, the Atlanta Hawks, and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
In 1996–97 NBA season Davis coached the Philadelphia 76ers, and he coached the Orlando Magic for nearly two seasons from 2003 to 2005. On June 21, 2007, he was named assistant coach by new Grizzlies head coach Marc Iavaroni. Davis had previously served as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers, New Jersey Nets, Orlando Magic, Minnesota Timberwolves, Indiana Pacers, Memphis Grizzlies, Toronto Raptors, and Los Angeles Lakers.
On January 22, 2009, Iavaroni was fired by Memphis GM Chris Wallace, and Davis was named interim head coach of the Grizzlies. On January 25, Lionel Hollins—Davis' teammate on the 1977 Portland team—was named Memphis' head coach, with Davis going back to his old job as an assistant coach. From 2011 to 2013, Davis worked as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors.

Isaiah Rider

Isaiah Rider Jr., nicknamed J.R. (born March 12, 1971), is an American former professional basketball player.
Rider was born in Oakland, California, and was raised in nearby Alameda. He starred in both baseball and basketball at Encinal High School before going on to a college career with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), and a professional career in the National Basketball Association.

Ruben Patterson

Ruben Nathaniel Patterson (born July 31, 1975) is an American former professional basketball player. During his career, he played as a small forward and shooting guard. During his college career at the University of Cincinnati, Patterson earned third-team All-American honors and helped lead the Bearcats to Conference USA titles in both of his seasons there. Drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1998, Patterson began his career with the Greek team AEK Athens BC before joining the Lakers in his rookie season. Later, he played for the NBA teams Seattle SuperSonics, Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets, Milwaukee Bucks, and Los Angeles Clippers before ending his career with the Lebanese team Champville SC.

Jim Barnett

James Franklin Barnett (born July 7, 1944) is a former professional basketball player. He was the Golden State Warriors television analyst from 1985 to 2019, and is currently the team's radio color analyst on 95.7 The Game.

Ron Brewer

Ronald Charles Brewer (born September 16, 1955) is a retired American professional basketball player.  A 6'4" (1.93 m) guard from the University of Arkansas, he was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the 1978 NBA draft.

Juan Dixon

Juan Dixon (born October 9, 1978) is an American former professional basketball player and the current head coach for Coppin State University in Baltimore.  Dixon led the University of Maryland Terrapins to their first NCAA championship in 2002 and earned Most Outstanding Player honors at the 2002 Final Four.

Jamal Crawford

Aaron Jamal Crawford (born March 20, 1980) is an American professional basketball player who  last played for the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played for  basketball powerhouse  Rainier Beach High School in Seattle and then the University of Michigan. He made his NBA debut in 2000 for the Chicago Bulls, who acquired him from the Cleveland Cavaliers on draft day. He would later play  for the New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors, Atlanta Hawks, Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Minnesota Timberwolves. Having earned NBA Sixth Man of the Year honors in 2010 and 2014 and again in 2016, Crawford is the first ever three-time winner of the award. He is the all-time NBA leader in four-point plays, with 55 or 60 counting the playoffs. As recently as April 9, 2019, Crawford (39 years, 20 days) became the oldest player to score 50+ points in a single game, and the first player to do so with four different teams. His 51-point tally is the most points ever scored by a player not in the starting lineup. In all NBA history, he ranks 27th in 50-point games accrued (between George Mikan and Larry Bird) and 7th in three-point field goals made (2,220). Crawford is also only the second player ever to score 10,000+ career points off the bench.

Mo Williams

Maurice Williams (born December 19, 1982) is an American former professional basketball player who played 13 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). After a successful high school career at Murrah High School, Williams attended college at the University of Alabama, where he led his team as a freshman to a 27–8 record, and also shared an SEC regular-season championship. After two seasons at Alabama, Williams entered the 2003 NBA draft where he was selected with the 47th overall pick by the Utah Jazz. Throughout his career, he has also played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Charlotte Hornets and Cleveland Cavaliers. In 2009, Williams was selected as an NBA All-Star. In 2016, he won his first NBA championship with the Cavaliers. In May 2018, he became an assistant coach for the Cal State Northridge Matadors men's basketball team.
