Steve McCurry

Steve McCurry (born April 23, 1950 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American photographer, freelancer and photojournalist. His most famous photo is of the "Afghan Girl", the girl with the piercing green eyes that periodically appears on the cover of National Geographic. McCurry has photographed many assignments for National Geographic and has been a member of Magnum Photos since 1986.McCurry is the recipient of numerous awards, including Magazine Photographer of the Year, awarded by the National Press Photographers Association; the Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal; and two first-place prizes in the World Press Photo contest (1985 and 1992).

Eve Arnold

Eve Arnold, OBE,  Hon. FRPS (née Cohen; April 21, 1912 – January 4, 2012) was an American photojournalist. She joined Magnum Photos agency in 1951, and became a full member in 1957.

Dorothea Lange

Dorothea Lange (May 26, 1895 – October 11, 1965) was an American documentary photographer and photojournalist, best known for her Depression-era work for the Farm Security Administration (FSA). Lange's photographs influenced the development of documentary photography and humanized the consequences of the Great Depression.

Alfred Eisenstaedt

Alfred Eisenstaedt (December 6, 1898 – August 23, 1995) was a German-born American photographer and photojournalist. He began his career in Germany prior to World War II but achieved prominence as a staff photographer for Life Magazine after moving to the U.S. Life featured more than 90 of his pictures on its covers, and more than 2,500 of his photo stories were published.Among his most famous cover photographs was V-J Day in Times Square, taken during the V-J Day celebration in New York City, showing American sailor George Mendonsa kissing nurse Greta Zimmer Friedman in a "dancelike dip" which "summed up the euphoria many Americans felt as the war came to a close", in the words of his obituary. He was "renowned for his ability to capture memorable images of important people in the news" and for his candid photographs taken with a small 35mm Leica camera, typically with natural lighting.

Irving Penn

Irving Penn (June 16, 1917 – October 7, 2009) was an American photographer known for his fashion photography, portraits, and still lifes.  Penn's career included work at Vogue magazine, and independent advertising work for clients including Issey Miyake and Clinique.  His work has been exhibited internationally and continues to inform the art of photography.

Édouard Boubat (French: [buba]; born Paris 13 September, 1923–died Paris 30 June 1999) was a French photojournalist and art photographer.

Yousuf Karsh

Yousuf Karsh  (Armenian name: Hovsep Karsh; December 23, 1908 – July 13, 2002), was an Armenian-Canadian photographer known for his portraits of notable individuals. He has been described as one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th century.
An Armenian Genocide survivor, Karsh migrated to Canada as a refugee. By the 1930s he established himself as a significant photographer in Ottawa, where he lived most of his adult life, though he traveled extensively for work. His iconic 1941 photograph of Winston Churchill was a breakthrough point in his 60-year career, through which he took numerous photos of known political leaders, men and women of arts and sciences. Over 20 photos by Karsh appeared on the cover of Life magazine, until he retired in 1992.

Cecil Beaton

Sir Cecil Walter Hardy Beaton CBE (14 January 1904 – 18 January 1980) was an English fashion, portrait and war photographer, diarist, painter, and interior designer, and an Oscar–winning stage and costume designer for films and the theatre.

Kevin Casha

Kevin Casha (born January 1958) is a Maltese photographer. He is four times the Malta Photographic Society’s (MPS) Photographer of the Year (1986, 1991, 1993, 1994). He is also the Malta Institute of Professional Photography’s (MIPP) first Photographer of the Year in 2004.
In 2004 he was also awarded the MIPP Award of Recognition for outstanding services rendered to local photography. Casha’s work for Maltese photography also makes him the only photographer to have been awarded Honorary Life Membership of both the MIPP as well as the MPS. Between the years of 1994 and 1996, he was elected President of the MPS and from 1996 and 2006 he was President of the MIPP. Again, he is the only person to have served terms as President of the two main and only photographic organizations in Malta.
In fact it was Casha who started the MIPP as a professional organization to help get working photographers together as well as establish the training of future photographers. The Institute, aimed at regulating and raising the standard of Maltese professional photography, also provided a much-needed voice to the photographic business community. Under his guidance, the Maltese Government officially recognized the MIPP and collaborates with the organization when relevant legislation on photography is needed.
Casha started his forays in the world of art when as a young boy he used to paint and draw. He was educated at the Malta Lyceum where he gained his Advanced level in Art at the age of 15. He later continued to study art under two renowned Maltese artists (now both deceased), namely Esprit Barthet and Antoine Camilleri at the Malta Polytechnic (between 1974 and 1977).
After leaving school, he started working as a Government Civil servant but his work was mainly with the Agricultural Ministry, something which was not much to his liking.
Finding that photography suited his lifestyle better, Casha started learning photography and attending the MPS in 1982. From then onwards, he never looked back and managed to succeed in leaving his previous governmental job and going into full-time photography in 1988.
Well known for his classical and traditional portraiture, Casha is a Fellow of the MIPP as well as the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers. He also has Associateships with The UK Master Photographers Association and the Malta Photographic Society.
Since establishing himself on the local photographic scene, Casha has always crusaded to increase the standards and recognition of Maltese photographers. In 1990 he coordinated the first ‘Malta Photography Yearbook’ a book aimed at showcasing the best Maltese photographers can offer. He has also provided his photographs on books such as “The Knights of St John in Malta”, “Malta-Its Archaeology and History”, “Maltese Food and Wine”, “Reflections on Life”, “Wines of Malta” and “Malta”.
Casha was the driving force behind the MIPP’s establishment of Qualifications for Maltese Photographers. These qualifications were introduced in 2001 and were formulated on the same lines as those in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, under his guidance, the foremost photographic association in the UK, the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers, later recognized the standards of the Maltese qualifications and agreed to give reciprocal qualifications.
In 2001 he won Fashion Photographer section of the Malta Fashion Awards.
In 2003, Casha was instrumental in bringing over to Malta the first International Congress of the Federation of European Professional Photographers.
Casha works constantly to educate other photographers and many beginners attend his regular courses in photography.
In 2006, the Maltese Government appointed him Technical Coordinator of a new major project aimed at establishing a National Picture Archive on the island. Casha himself has single-handedly worked so that this Archive safeguarding historical Maltese photography became a reality. The Archive, housed at the National Archives of Malta is presently working on digitizing and cataloguing old Maltese photographs and will soon be making these available on line for researchers and the general public.
On the personal front, Casha has staged one man exhibitions of his photography in Italy, Corsica, USA, Sicily and Malta, his first one “Images 86” at the Fine Arts Museum in Valletta, Malta. He has also won many personal awards in international photographic exhibitions and salons. He writes a monthly blog on the Maltastar.com website.

Robert Mapplethorpe

Robert Mapplethorpe (; November 4, 1946 – March 9, 1989) was an American photographer, known for his sensitive yet blunt treatment of controversial subject-matter in the black and white medium of photography. His work featured an array of subjects, including celebrity portraits, male and female nudes, self-portraits and still-life images of flowers. His most controversial work is that of the BDSM subculture in the late 1960s and early 1970s of New York City. The homoeroticism of this work fuelled a national debate over the public funding of controversial artwork.

Herb Ritts

Herbert "Herb" Ritts Jr. (August 13, 1952 – December 26, 2002) was an American fashion photographer and director prolific for his photographs of celebrities, models, and other cultural figures throughout the 1980s and 1990s. His work concentrated on black and white photography and portraits, often in the style of classical Greek sculpture, which emphasized the human shape.

Aleksander Mikhailovich Rodchenko (Russian: Алекса́ндр Миха́йлович Ро́дченко; 5 December [O.S. 23 November] 1891 – December 3, 1956) was a Russian artist, sculptor, photographer and graphic designer. He was one of the founders of constructivism and Russian design; he was married to the artist Varvara Stepanova.
Rodchenko was one of the most versatile Constructivist and Productivist artists to emerge after the Russian Revolution. He worked as a painter and graphic designer before turning to photomontage and photography. His photography was socially engaged, formally innovative, and opposed to a painterly aesthetic. Concerned with the need for analytical-documentary photo series, he often shot his subjects from odd angles—usually high above or down below—to shock the viewer and to postpone recognition. He wrote: "One has to take several different shots of a subject, from different points of view and in different situations, as if one examined it in the round rather than looked through the same key-hole again and again."

Mary Ellen Mark

Mary Ellen Mark (March 20, 1940 – May 25, 2015) was an American photographer known for her photojournalism, documentary photography, portraiture, and advertising photography. She photographed people who were "away from mainstream society and toward its more interesting, often troubled fringes".Mark had 18 collections of her work published, most notably Streetwise and Ward 81. Her work was exhibited at galleries and museums worldwide and widely published in Life, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, New York Times, and Vanity Fair. She was a member of Magnum Photos between 1977 and 1981. She received numerous accolades, including three Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards, three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the 2014 Lifetime Achievement in Photography Award from the George Eastman House and the Outstanding Contribution Photography Award from the World Photography Organisation.



Sam Haskins

Samuel Joseph Haskins (11 November 1926 – 26 November 2009), was a British photographer, born and raised in South Africa. He started his career in Johannesburg and moved to London in 1968. Haskins is best known for his contribution to in-camera image montage, and his books, Five Girls (book) (1962), Cowboy Kate (1964) and Haskins Posters (1973).
He suffered a stroke on 19 September 2009, the opening day of his exhibition to launch Fashion Etcetera at Milk Gallery in New York and died at home in Bowral, Australia, nine weeks later.

Emil Otto Hoppé

Emil Otto Hoppé (14 April 1878 – 9 December 1972) was a German-born British portrait, travel, and topographic photographer active between 1907 and 1945. Born to a wealthy family in Munich, he moved to London in 1900 to train as a financier, but took up photography and rapidly achieved great success.
He was the only son of a prominent banker, and was educated in the finest schools of Munich, Paris and Vienna. Upon leaving school he served apprenticeships in German banks for ten years, before accepting a position with the Shanghai Banking Corporation. He never arrived in China. The first leg of his journey took him to England where he met an old school friend. Hoppé married his old school friend's sister, Marion Bliersbach, and stayed in London. While working for the Deutsche Bank, he became increasingly enamored with photography, and, in 1907, jettisoned his commercial career and opened a portrait studio. Within a few years, E.O. Hoppé was the undisputed leader of pictorial portraiture in Europe. To say that someone has a "household name" has become a cliché, yet in Hoppé's case the phrase is apt. Rarely in the history of the medium has a photographer been so famous in his own lifetime among the general public. He was as famous as his sitters. It is difficult to think of a prominent name in the fields of politics, art, literature, and the theatre who did not pose for his camera."Although Hoppé was one of the most important photographic artists of his era and highly celebrated in his time, in 1954, at the age of 76, he sold his body of photographic work to a commercial London picture archive, the Mansell Collection. In the collection, the work was filed by subject in with millions of other stock pictures and no longer accessible by author. Almost all of Hoppé's photographic work—that which gained him the reputation as Britain's most influential international photographer between 1907 and 1939—was accidentally obscured from photo-historians and from photo-history itself. It remained in the collection for over thirty years after Hoppé's death, and was not fully accessible to the public until the collection closed down and was acquired by new owners in the United States.
In 1994 photographic art curator Graham Howe retrieved Hoppé's photographic work from the picture library and rejoined it with the Hoppé family archive of photographs and biographical documents. This was the first time since 1954 that the complete E.O. Hoppé Collection was gathered together. Many years were spent in cataloguing, conservation, and research of the recovered work.

Nadar

Gaspard-Félix Tournachon (6 April 1820 – 20 March 1910), known by the Mononymous pseudonym Nadar, was a French photographer, caricaturist, journalist, novelist, balloonist and proponent of manned flight.
Photographic portraits by Nadar are held by many of the great national collections of photographs. His son, Paul Nadar, continued the studio after his death.

Johann Baptist Isenring (12 May 1796, Lütisburg - 9 April 1860, St. Gallen) was a Swiss landscape painter and printer. He was also the first Daguerrotypist in Switzerland.

Cindy Sherman

Cynthia Morris Sherman (born January 19, 1954) is an American artist whose work consists exclusively of photographic self-portraits, depicting herself in many different contexts and as various imagined characters.
Her breakthrough work is often considered to be "Complete Untitled Film Stills," a series of 70 black-and-white photographs of herself in many of the roles of women in performance media (especially arthouse films and popular B-movies). In the 1980s, Sherman used color film and large prints, and focused more on costume, lighting and facial expression.
In 1995, Sherman was the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship. In 2013 she received an honorary doctorate degree from the Royal College of Art, London.

Ida Kar

Ida Kar (8 April 1908 – 24 December 1974) was a photographer active mainly in London after 1945. She took many black-and-white portraits of artists and writers. Her solo show of photographs at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1960 was the first of its kind to be held in a major public gallery in London. Kar thus made a significant contribution to the recognition of photography as a form of fine art.
