A list of the best San Antonio Spurs of all time. The Spurs are one of the four ABA franchises to successfully transition into the NBA. San Antonio has had one of the greatest runs in modern basketball history. Beginning in 1989 after a few years of misery, the team's first overall pick in 1987, David Robinson, started playing for the team after his two-year naval commitment was completed. From the start, Robinson was one of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/greatest-centers-of-all-time">greatest centers in the NBA</a>. The team went on a long successful run with &quot;The Admiral&quot; steering the ship. Along with Sean Elliott, one of the best Spurs ever, San Antonio began its golden era. In 1997, after a down year where Robinson missed nearly the entire season with a knee injury, the Spurs drafted Tim Duncan, one of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/top-10-current-nba-players">best players of his generation</a>. Duncan proved to be exactly what the Spurs needed. The team won four NBA titles with Duncan on the team, which cemented his status as one of the greatest players ever. When Robinson retired, new stars emerged. Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili are vital cogs to the Spurs engine, and are two of the biggest legends in San Antonio Spurs history. Throughout the team's greatest period, it has been the model franchise in terms of stability and its ability to consistently draft great players. Tony Parker

William Anthony Parker Jr. (born 17 May 1982) is a French-American former professional basketball player. The son of a professional basketball player, Parker played for two years for Paris Basket Racing in the French basketball league, before joining the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was selected by the Spurs with the 28th overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft, and quickly became their starting point guard. Parker won four NBA championships (2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014), all of which were with the Spurs. He also played for ASVEL Basket in France during the 2011 NBA lockout, and finished his career after one season with the Charlotte Hornets.
Parker was named to six NBA All-Star games, three All-NBA Second Teams, and an All-NBA Third Team. He was also the 2007 NBA Finals MVP. A severe injury to his left quadriceps tendon in Game 2 in the second round of the 2017 playoffs ended his season.
While playing with the French national team, Parker was named the MVP of EuroBasket 2013, following his team's victory over Lithuania in the final. He finished as the tournament's top scorer, with an average of 19 points per game. In 2015, he became the all-time leading scorer in the EuroBasket competition, a record that was broken by Pau Gasol two years later.

Avery Johnson

Avery DeWitt Johnson (born March 25, 1965) is an American basketball coach who is the former head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide men's basketball team.
Johnson spent 16 years in the National Basketball Association as a player, and subsequently served as the head coach of two NBA teams: the Dallas Mavericks and New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets. He led the Mavericks to their first NBA Finals appearance and to three consecutive 50+ win seasons. During his playing days, Johnson was known as the "Little General" for his small stature (by NBA standards), his leadership skills as a point guard (floor general), and his close friendship with former San Antonio Spurs teammate David Robinson - himself nicknamed "The Admiral" based on his tenure at the Naval Academy.

Patty Mills

Patrick Sammy Mills (born 11 August 1988) is an Australian professional basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Mills was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the 55th overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft after playing two years of college basketball for Saint Mary's. 
Mills was born and raised in Canberra, Australia, and is of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal Australian descent. In 2007, he became only the third indigenous basketball player to play for Australia behind Olympians Michael Ah Matt (1964) and Danny Morseu (1980–84).Mills began his NBA career with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2010. In 2011, during the NBA lockout, Mills returned to Australia to play for the Melbourne Tigers of the National Basketball League (NBL). After playing in China with the Xinjiang Flying Tigers, Mills returned to the United States in March 2012 and signed with the San Antonio Spurs, where he has remained ever since. Mills became a strong contributor off the bench and helped the Spurs win the 2014 NBA Championship against the Miami Heat.
Mills is a regular member of the Australian national team, the Boomers.

Rod Strickland

Rodney Strickland (born July 11, 1966) is an American basketball executive and retired National Basketball Association (NBA) player. He is currently the program manager for the NBA G League's professional path. Strickland played college basketball at DePaul University, where he was awarded All-American honors. He then enjoyed a long career in the NBA, playing from 1988 to 2005. Strickland was an assistant coach for the South Florida Bulls, under Orlando Antigua from 2014 to 2017.   He formerly served in an administrative role for the University of Kentucky basketball team under head coach John Calipari and was the director of basketball operations at the University of Memphis under Calipari. He is the godfather of current NBA player Kyrie Irving.

James Silas

James Edward Silas (born February 11, 1949) is a retired American professional basketball player, at the guard position. Born in Tallulah, Louisiana, Silas played the majority of his career with the Dallas Chaparrals/San Antonio Spurs of the ABA/NBA. His nicknames include "The Snake", "Captain Late" and "The Late Mr. Silas", the latter two referring to the fact that Silas seemed to play his best late in games.

Johnny Moore

John Brian Moore (born March 31, 1958) is an American retired professional basketball player. Moore played college basketball for The University of Texas at Austin under head coaches Leon Black and Abe Lemons from 1975 to 1979. He spent his entire NBA career playing point guard for the San Antonio Spurs, save one game for the New Jersey Nets. A rare illness caused Moore to have his career put on hold in early 1986.

Maurice Cheeks

Maurice Edward Cheeks (born September 8, 1956) is an American former professional basketball player and is currently an assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Thunder of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He has also served as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, Philadelphia 76ers and Detroit Pistons. Cheeks was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 2018.

Vinny Del Negro

Vincent Joseph Del Negro  (born August 9, 1966) is an American retired basketball player. He was the head coach of the National Basketball Association's Chicago Bulls from 2008 to 2010, and the Los Angeles Clippers from 2010 to 2013. Del Negro is currently an analyst with NBA TV.

Terry Porter

Terry Porter (born April 8, 1963) is an American college basketball coach and former player in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is currently the head men's basketball coach at the University of Portland. A native of Wisconsin, he played college basketball at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point before being drafted 24th by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1985 NBA draft. In Portland, he played ten seasons with two All-Star Game appearances. Porter spent 17 years in the NBA as a player. Following his retirement as a player in 2002, he began coaching in the league and has twice been a head coach, first with his hometown Milwaukee Bucks, and then with the Phoenix Suns up until February 16, 2009. He was the alumni ambassador for Portland Trail Blazers.

Donnie Freeman

Donald E. Freeman (born July 18, 1944) is an American former professional basketball player.  He spent eight seasons (1967–1975) in the American Basketball Association (ABA) and one season (1975–1976) in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Freeman was the youngest of four children.

Jon Sundvold

Jon Thomas "Sunny" Sundvold (born July 2, 1961) is a retired American professional basketball player who was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1st round (16th overall) of the 1983 NBA Draft. A 6'2" shooting guard from the University of Missouri, Sundvold played in 9 NBA seasons from 1983–1992. He played for the Sonics, San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat.

John Harding Lucas II

John Harding Lucas II (born October 31, 1953) is a retired American professional basketball player and coach. He currently works as the player development coach of the Houston Rockets. He played basketball and tennis at the University of Maryland, College Park and was an All American in both.

Mike Gale

Michael Eugene Gale (born July 18, 1950) is a retired American basketball player.
After graduating from Philadelphia's Overbrook High School, Gale, a 6'4" guard, played college basketball at Elizabeth City State University.  He was drafted in the third round of the 1971 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls and by the Kentucky Colonels in the 1971 American Basketball Association draft.  Gale opted to play for the Colonels.
Gale played in the National Basketball Association and American Basketball Association as a member of the Kentucky Colonels (1971–1974), the New York Nets (1974–1975), the San Antonio Spurs (1975–1980), the Portland Trail Blazers (1980–1981), and the Golden State Warriors (1981–1982).  He tallied 6,203 career points and 3,146 career assists, and he won the 1974 ABA Championship while with the Nets.

Johnny Dawkins

Johnny Earl Dawkins Jr. (born September 28, 1963) is an American basketball coach and former player who is the head coach for the UCF men's basketball team. From 2008 to 2016, he was the head coach of Stanford. He was a two-time All-American and national player of the year as a senior in 1986 while at Duke from 1982 to 1986. Dawkins subsequently played nine seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the San Antonio Spurs (1986–1989), Philadelphia 76ers (1989–1994), and Detroit Pistons (1994–1995).  From 1998 to 2008, he served as an assistant basketball coach at his alma mater, Duke.

Mike Evans

Michael Leeroyall Evans (born April 19, 1955) is a retired American National Basketball Association (NBA) player and coach.  He played collegiately at Kansas State University where he is Kansas State's second all-time leading points scorer, behind Jacob Pullen, with 2,115 points.  He was drafted by the Denver Nuggets with the 21st pick of the 1978 NBA Draft and had a 9-year NBA career with four teams (the San Antonio Spurs, Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Denver Nuggets).  He was widely regarded throughout his career as an excellent 3-point shooter, being among the league leaders in that statistical category for several years.
After his retirement as a player, he became an assistant coach with the Nuggets.  In 2001, when Dan Issel was fired, Evans assumed coaching duties for the remainder of the 2001-02 season, after which Jeff Bzdelik was hired as the team's head coach. In 2006-07 he was a scout for the Toronto Raptors. He then joined the Raptors' coaching staff in 2007-08. He was fired in the 2009 off-season.

Antonio Daniels

Antonio Robert Daniels (born March 19, 1975) is an American retired professional basketball player who played 13 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA).  He is currently a basketball analyst for the Oklahoma City Thunder on FOX Sports Oklahoma and co-host/analyst on SiriusXM NBA Radio.

Cory Joseph

Cory Ephram Joseph (born August 20, 1991) is a Canadian professional basketball player for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He plays the point guard position and is also the captain of the Canadian national team. He has played for the San Antonio Spurs, the Toronto Raptors, and the Indiana Pacers.

Thomas Ray Williams (October 14, 1954 – March 22, 2013) was an American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association from 1977 to 1987. Born in Mount Vernon, New York, he was the younger brother of Gus Williams, who also played in the NBA.

Leon Wood

Osie Leon Wood III (born March 25, 1962), is an American former professional basketball player.  A college All-American, he was a first round NBA draft pick, and both an Olympic and Pan-Am Games gold-medalist. He is currently in his 22nd season as an NBA referee.

T. J. Ford

Terrance Jerod Ford (born March 24, 1983) is an American former professional basketball player. Having been awarded numerous top basketball accolades in high school and college, Ford entered the 2003 NBA draft and was selected eighth overall by the Milwaukee Bucks. Ford's recurring back injuries resulted in him missing many games in his three seasons with the Bucks, but in 2005, it was announced that he was fit to play basketball again. Ford was traded to the Raptors prior to the 2006–07 NBA season, and established himself as the starting point guard, helping the team win the Atlantic Division crown and reach the 2007 NBA Playoffs. Following an injury sustained in the 2007–08 NBA season, however, Ford had difficulties reclaiming the starting spot and was traded to the Indiana Pacers. He signed with KK Zagreb of Croatia during the 2011 NBA lockout where he appeared in one game, playing 17 minutes and scoring 7 points. On December 9, 2011, Ford signed a contract with the San Antonio Spurs.
Off the court, Ford set up the T. J. Ford Foundation in 2004 to help participants achieve their academic, personal and civil goals.

Michael Anderson

Michael Levin Anderson (born March 23, 1966) is an American former professional basketball player for Drexel University, the NBA, Spain's professional Liga ACB, the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), the Greek Basket League and the Turkish Basketball Super League.

Vernon Maxwell

Vernon Maxwell (born September 12, 1965) is an American retired professional basketball player who was a shooting guard in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for thirteen seasons during the late 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s.  Maxwell played college basketball for the University of Florida, and led the Florida Gators to their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance.  He was selected by the Denver Nuggets in the second round of the 1988 NBA Draft and was immediately traded to the San Antonio Spurs. His longest and most successful NBA tenure was with the Houston Rockets. The nickname "Mad Max" was bestowed upon Maxwell by color commentators for his clutch three-point shooting, which reached its pinnacle in the deciding game of the 1994 NBA Finals between Houston and New York. Maxwell is among just nine players in NBA history to amass 30 points in a single quarter, accomplishing that feat en route to a 51-point outing on January 26, 1991, against Cleveland.

Michael Louis Bratz (born October 17, 1955) is a retired American basketball guard and is currently the assistant general manager for the Sacramento Kings. He played professionally in the NBA for the Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Bulls, Golden State Warriors, and Sacramento Kings.

George Matthew Karl (born May 12, 1951) is an American former professional basketball coach and former player. He is one of 9 coaches in NBA history to have won 1,000 NBA games, though he never won a championship.
