The Best San Diego Padres Of All Time
This is a list of the greatest San Diego Padres players in team history, whether the top Padres pitchers or top hitters. Besides beautiful weather and a ballpark that's considered one of the best in all of baseball, the San Diego Padres haven't had a lot going for them in the club's history. But when the team has had success, it usually means either a division title or a deep playoff run. The Padres have won the NL West five times and have played in two World Series. Unfortunately for the Padres, they ran into buzzsaws in the form of the Detroit Tigers in 1984 and one of the greatest New York Yankees teams of all time in 1998. That being said, a lot of great players have spent their best years in San Diego, despite their lack of winning history.
The Padres can count one of the best hitters of all time as their own. For 20 years, Tony Gwynn was one of the steadiest hitters in all of baseball, which cemented him as one of the greatest Padres ever. While he didn't swing the most powerful bat, Gwynn could be counted on to hit well over .300 for most of his career. He won eight NL batting titles in his career and had a chance to reach baseball immortality in 1994 when he was knocking on the door of hitting .400 before the player's strike ruined that. Gwynn was a 15-time All Star and was elected into the Hall of Fame in 2007, receiving an eyeopening 97.6 percent of the vote, one of the highest in Hall of Fame history.
