Saturday Night Live in the 2000s saw a lot of watershed events. The 2000 presidential election figured heavy in sketches, as did the advent of digital shorts, and the introduction of many memorable new cast members. But the event that most overshadowed the dawn of the era was the September 11th attacks in 2001. Despite many challenges and times when the future of comedy was uncertain, SNL made the aughts a decade of laughter, in thanks to the incredibly funny stand up comedians who came through the show at the turn of the 21st century. But which members of the 2000s SNL cast were the best?

The 2000s saw a lot of revolving casting. Players continued to pop in and out but Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, Fred Armisen, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon, and company did inject SNL with some fresh material and make the show more watchable again. The continual auditioning, the fight for screen time, and the second guessing by writers and producers was still typical, but cast members seemed to almost expect it. With history as a guide, cast members knew the ropes a little bit better than their predecessors and some iconic Saturday Night Live sketches and characters came out of this era.
