The best supergroups ever made are those favorite bands who were pieced together from former members of other great bands who came together to make new music. As it goes in the music business, bands are constantly breaking up. Some musicians go on to solo projects while others join fellow displaced musicians to form new groups and continue their music careers. These are the very best supergroups ever made with each containing at least two members who were in well known bands prior to joining this new rock group.
Creating supergroups is not a new concept, in fact, one of the best supergroups ever created did it way back in 1966. Cream, which was formed by Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, is not just one of the best supergroups of all time but also one of the best rock bands of all time. The 1960s and 1970s actually had many great supergroups with other favorites such as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Blind Faith, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Derek and the Dominos, Journey, Bad Company and Little River Band all forming during those times from well known members who previously played with different groups.
Moving forward, another great bunch of supergroups formed in the 1990s and 2000s. The likes of the Foo Fighters, Audioslave, Velvet Revolver, Alter Bridge and Chickenfoot all formed using members who previously saw success with other groups before joining these bands and earning a second level of fame. While it's easy to argue whether the original bands or the newly formed supergroups deserve higher ranking among the top 500 musical groups and artists of all time each of these bands show a respectable level of persistence. Just because their first (or second or third in some cases) band didn't last didn't stop them from making sweet music for all to enjoy.
