Since his start in Action Comics #1 back in 1938, Superman has been one of the most popular DC Comics characters of all time. In the 75+ years he&#39;s been around, his costume has had <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/superman-movie-suits/pierce-nahigyan" target="_blank">many variations in films, TV shows</a>, and in the comics.&nbsp;

Every comic book illustrator had <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/superman-costume-evolution/pierce-nahigyan" target="_blank">their own unique take on the Man of Steel</a>, changing up the colors, the textures, and even the iconic &quot;S&quot; on his chest. Some changes were better than others, but which ones are the ones you liked the most?

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice settles the age old question with a definitive answer: Martha Wayne and Martha Kent. They would win in a fight between Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent. But the examples on this list come not from the cinematic slugfest between DC&#39;s heaviest hitters so much as the Silver and Golden ages of comics. They&rsquo;re just fun to discuss - who doesn&rsquo;t like talking about Batman being accused of witchcraft? Superman is one of the oldest superheroes in the world and has become one of the staples of comic book history. It&#39;s almost universally loved, and some argue it&#39;s one of <a href="https://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/the-best-superhero-movies-ever-made " target="_blank">the best superhero movies</a>&nbsp;ever made&nbsp;(even if others think it&#39;s <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/why-good-superman-movies-are-impossible/aaron-edwards" target="_blank">impossible to make a good Superman movie</a>).

What you might not know is that making the film was a nightmare - perhaps even more so than <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/tim-burton-batman-trivia/coy-jandreau " target="_blank">Tim Burton&#39;s Batman</a>. There are a lot of&nbsp;bizarre facts from Superman: The Movie&#39;s tumultuous production - and yes, four&nbsp;of them involve Marlon Brando. From the moment Richard Donner was brought onto the film (last minute), the Man of Steel&#39;s&nbsp;first feature was one hell of a ride. Here&#39;s all the bizarro trivia surrounding the first of&nbsp;Christopher Reeve&#39;s Superman movies.&nbsp;

The Man of Steel has one of the most - if not&nbsp;the&nbsp;most - recognizable costumes in comic books. And while it may seem like his super suit hasn&#39;t changed much since 1938, its various details have actually been tweaked and revised in almost every decade.

Superman&#39;s evolution - even setting aside the wild experimentation of his 1990s outfits - has included changes to his boots, the size&nbsp;of his trademark &quot;S&quot; shield, and occasionally ditching his&nbsp;cape. When it comes to the Superman logo evolution, that shield has transitioned&nbsp;from gold to the familiar red and yellow to - following his climactic bout with Doomsday - plain metal.

Unlike <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/superman-movie-suits/pierce-nahigyan" target="_blank">Superman&#39;s movie suits</a>, his comic uniform has enjoyed a fair bit of variety. Here&#39;s a nostalgic roundup of his most fashionable duds.

Clark Kent&nbsp;is&nbsp;Superman. With a heart of gold and a veritable <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/all-supermans-powers/ranker-comics" target="_blank">laundry list of superpowers</a>, Kent patrols Metropolis while fighting for &quot;truth, justice, and the American way.&quot; Superman is <a class="edS-cl" href="https://www.ranker.com/list/superhero-replacements-better-than-the-original/stephanroget?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">the original superhero</a>, as Kent first donned&nbsp;the red and blue tights in the pages of&nbsp;Action Comics #1&nbsp;way back in April 1938. For nearly an entire century, Superman has been an international icon: There have been radio serials, movies, television shows, and so much merchandise&nbsp;you can&#39;t even keep track of it. Clark Kent&#39;s Superman is a bona fide legend... but Superman hasn&#39;t always been Clark Kent.

Sometimes, Kent gets pulled off-planet and needs a replacement Superman to take charge in his stead. Sometimes, Kent switches costumes with another hero for pure comedic effect. On more than one occasion, Kent gets body-swapped against his will. There was also the time DC Comics offed&nbsp;Clark Kent, garnering widespread mainstream media attention, and used a whopping four Supermen to replace him. Taking other members of the Clark Kent/Kal-El family out of the equation -&nbsp;apologies to <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/best-interpretations-of-supergirl/ranker-entertainment" target="_blank">Supergirl</a>, Krypto the Superdog, and Jon Kent - here are the characters who have taken up the mantle of Superman for a day (or longer).

In an era in which the Man of Steel&rsquo;s most notable portrayals feature&nbsp;him feuding with Batman and snapping necks, no one is going to earn any originality points for saying that Superman is a jerk. What may come as a surprise to more casual Clark Kent fans, however, is the fact that Supes has been an occasional bully for much of his published history - going all the way back to the Action Comics issues of the &#39;30s.

And it&rsquo;s not just <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/reasons-batman-hates-superman/jacob-shelton" target="_blank">Bruce Wayne on the wrong end of Superman&rsquo;s antagonism</a>. When Kal-El gets in a belligerent mood, anyone and everyone are&nbsp;fair game - including Jimmy Olsen, Wonder Woman, and even his beloved Lois Lane. Sometimes, Superman is satiated by a well-planned prank - but sometimes his inimical itch can only be scratched by acts that border on outright sadism. So much for truth, justice, and the American way!

When&nbsp;Superman: The Movie&nbsp;came out in 1978, the film revolutionized the comic book film industry. Thanks to great reviews and a blockbuster box office, Superman&nbsp;changed how comic book movies were perceived on the big (and small) screen.

Unfortunately, the same franchise that created perhaps one of the most iconic superhero movies of all time&nbsp;also created arguably one of <a class="edS-cl" href="https://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/the-most-ridiculous-superheroes-ever?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">the worst superhero</a> movies of all time, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace&nbsp;- so much so that it made the legendary Christopher Reeve hang up his cape for good.

Sadly, the movie had a lot of potential. It saw Superman having to intervene&nbsp;in a global&nbsp;arms race to help rid the world of nuclear weapons. But Lex Luthor has&nbsp;other plans, and with the help of&nbsp;war mongers&nbsp;looking for&nbsp;financial reward, Luthor&nbsp;creates a being out of nuclear energy that is strong enough to take on Superman.

From struggles stemming from&nbsp;substantial cost-cutting to problems with the script, the film had many issues that&nbsp;ultimately led to the failure of Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, halting the&nbsp;Man of Steel <a href="https://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/favorite-comic-book-movies" target="_blank">franchise</a> for decades.

Lex Luthor

Alexander Joseph "Lex" Luthor is a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Lex Luthor is the archenemy of Superman, although given his high status as a supervillain, he has also come into conflict with Batman and other superheroes in the DC Universe. Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the character first appeared in Action Comics #23. Luthor is a wealthy, power-mad business magnate, one of the most intelligent beings in the DC Universe, and has incredible technological prowess. Lex Luthor's goals typically center on killing Superman, the foremost obstacle to achieving the villain's megalomaniacal goals. Despite periodically wearing a powered exoskeleton, Luthor has traditionally lacked superpowers or a dual identity. Lex Luthor has carefully crafted his public persona in order to avoid suspicion and arrest. He is well known for his philanthropy, donating millions of dollars to Metropolis over the years, funding parks, foundations, and charities.
Lex Luthor typically appears in comic books and other media as a business magnate with a bald head.

Brainiac

Brainiac is a fictional supervillain that appears in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character first appeared in Action Comics #242, and was created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino.
An extraterrestrial android, Brainiac is a principal foe of Superman, and is responsible for shrinking and stealing Kandor, the capital city of Superman's home planet Krypton. Due to multiple revisions of DC's continuity, several variations of Brainiac have appeared. Most incarnations of Brainiac depict him as a green-skinned being in humanoid form. He is bald, except for a set of diodes protruding from his skull.
The character is the origin of the informal word which means "genius". The name itself is a portmanteau of the words brain and maniac, with influence from ENIAC, the name of an early computer. In 2009, Brainiac was ranked as IGN's 17th Greatest Comic Book Villain of All Time.

Doomsday

Doomsday is a supervillain who appears in comic books published by DC Comics. Doomsday first appeared as a cameo in Superman: The Man of Steel #17 with his first full appearance in Superman: The Man of Steel #18. He was created by writer-artist Dan Jurgens, who wanted to create a villain who could be a physical challenge for Superman in a straight fight as most of his current foes relied on technology and intellect to oppose the Man of Steel.
Imagine Games Network's list of the Top 100 Comic Book Villains of All Time ranked Doomsday as #46. He is best known as the character who "killed" Superman.

General Zod

General Zod is a fictional character, a supervillain who appears in comic books published by DC Comics, and is one of Superman's more prominent enemies. The character, who first appeared in Adventure Comics #283, was created by Robert Bernstein and initially designed by George Papp. Zod is a warlord from Superman's home planet of Krypton. As a Kryptonian, he exhibits the same powers and abilities as Superman and is consequently viewed as one of his greatest enemies.
In Superman and Superman II, British actor Terence Stamp portrayed the character, which Total Film later ranked as #32 on their "Top 50 Greatest Villains Of All Time" list in 2007. Pop-culture website IGN.com ranked General Zod as #30 on their list of the "Top 100 Comic Book Villains", asserting that "Stamp is Zod". Recently, the character was played by Michael Shannon in Zack Snyder's 2013 film Man of Steel, and by Callum Blue in Smallville.

Darkseid

Darkseid is a fictional supervillain appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. He first appeared in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #134, and he was created by writer-artist Jack Kirby. Darkseid is one of the most powerful characters in the DC Universe. Debuting in the Silver Age of Comic Books, he has appeared in four decades of DC Comics publications, featuring prominently in the New Gods titles and limited series as the nemesis of the New Gods and Superman. He has also been associated with the DC Comics related media and merchandise such as animated television series, toys, trading cards, and video games. Darkseid was ranked at No #6 on IGN's Top 100 Comic Book Villains of All Time in 2014.

Metallo

Metallo is a comic book supervillain and cyborg who appears in Superman stories published by DC Comics. Metallo's trademark is his kryptonite power source, which he often uses as a weapon against Superman. His traditional identity is John Corben. The character first appeared in Action Comics #252.
In 2009, Metallo was ranked as IGN's 52nd Greatest Comic Book Villain of All Time.

Mongul

Mongul is the name of two fictional characters that appear in comic books published by DC Comics. The first version of the character debuted in DC Comics Presents #27 and was created by writer Len Wein and artist Jim Starlin. The second version first appears in Showcase '95 #8 as an infant, and was created by writer Peter J. Tomasi and artist Scot Eaton.
Debuting in the Bronze Age of comic books, Mongul has been featured in other DC Comics-endorsed products such as animated television series; video games; a direct-to-DVD film, and merchandise such as action figures and trading cards.

The Parasite is the name of several fictional characters that appear in Superman comic book stories published by DC Comics. A supervillain, Parasite has the ability to temporarily absorb the energy, knowledge and super-powers of another being by touch, making him a formidable foe for the Man of Steel. In 2009, The Parasite was ranked as IGN's 61st Greatest Comic Book Villain of All Time.

Hank Henshaw

Hank Henshaw is a supervillain featured in the DC Comics universe. While originally featured primarily as an enemy of Superman, recent years have repositioned him as one of the main enemies of the Green Lantern Corps. While the character debuted in The Adventures of Superman #465, he was reintroduced as the Cyborg Superman during the Reign of the Supermen storyline following Superman's death. At times, he is also referred to as The Cyborg.

Bizarro

Bizarro is a fictional super villain appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by writer Otto Binder and artist George Papp as a "mirror image" of Superman and first appeared in Superboy #68.
Debuting in the Silver Age of Comic Books, the character has often been portrayed as an antagonist to Superman, and appeared in both comic books and graphic novels, and other DC Comics-related products such as animated and live-action television series, trading cards, toys, and video games.
Bizarro was Ranked no 25 on IGN's List of 100 Top Comic Book Villains, and the term itself has entered the lexicon beyond pop culture.

Mister Mxyzptlk

Mister Mxyzptlk, sometimes called Mxy, is a fictional impish supervillain who appears in DC Comics' Superman comic books.
He first appeared in Superman #30. He is usually presented as a trickster, in the classical mythological sense, in that he enjoys tormenting Superman. In most of his appearances in DC Comics, he can be stopped only by tricking him into saying or spelling his own name backwards, which will return him to his home in the 5th dimension and keep him there for a minimum of 90 days. However, this specific limitation of the character has been eliminated since the Crisis on Infinite Earths reboot, upon which the character leaves only when he willingly agrees to do so after meeting some conditions he sets, such as having Superman succeed in getting Mxy to paint his own face blue.
In 2009, Mister Mxyzptlk was ranked as IGN's 76th Greatest Comic Book Villain of All Time.

Ultraman

Ultraman is the name of several fictional characters, who are supervillains appearing in stories published by DC Comics. The characters are all evil or corrupted alternate-universe counterparts of Superman. Ultraman first appeared in Justice League of America #29.

Toyman

The Toyman is the name of three comic book supervillains and one adolescent superhero in the DC Comics universe. They mostly appear in Superman stories. The first Toyman appeared in Action Comics #64. His real name is Winslow Schott.
The Toyman uses toy-based or toy-themed devices and gimmicks in his various crimes. The Toyman's weapons, while sometimes comical, are also very dangerous. The Toyman's creations include devices such as life-sized wind-up tanks, acid-spraying water pistols, and toy soldiers that carry real guns. The Toyman usually dresses in a flamboyant costume. The Toyman made frequent appearances in the Golden Age comics, but has appeared infrequently in Superman stories since then.

Solomon Grundy

Solomon Grundy is a fictional zombie supervillain in the DC Comics universe and as an antihero in the DC animated universe. Named after the 19th century nursery rhyme, Grundy was introduced as an enemy of the Golden Age Green Lantern, but has since become a prominent enemy for a number of superheroes, such as Superman and Batman. He also has ties to DC/Vertigo's Swamp Thing character, vital in the sprout storyline. He first appeared in All-American Comics #61. Solomon Grundy is one of the earliest, if not the first, depictions of a zombie in the comic medium.

Eradicator

The Eradicator is a fictional comic book superhero character having a recurring role in Superman stories published by DC Comics. Originally created as a weapon by an ancient alien race, he is over 200,000 years old and is considered an artifact of Krypton. The character was created by writer Roger Stern, and first appeared in Action Comics Annual #2.

Vandal Savage

Vandal Savage is a fictional character, a supervillain published by DC Comics. He first appeared in Green Lantern vol. 1 #10, and was created by Alfred Bester and Martin Nodell.
Savage is immortal, and has plagued the earth with crime and violence since before the beginning of recorded human history. He is a brilliant tactician with immense technological prowess. He is one of DC's most persistent villains and has fought hundreds of heroes throughout history. In 2009, Vandal Savage was ranked as IGN's 36th Greatest Comic Book Villain of All Time.

Anti-Monitor

The Anti-Monitor is a character, a comic book supervillain and the antagonist of the 1985 DC Comics miniseries Crisis on Infinite Earths. He first appeared in Crisis on Infinite Earths #2, and was destroyed in Crisis on Infinite Earths #12, only to return after a long absence in Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special #1. In 2009, Anti-Monitor was ranked as IGN's 49th greatest Comic Book Villain of All Time.

Deathstroke the Terminator is a fictional supervillain, and sometimes antihero, who appears in comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez. He is a mercenary and assassin who first appeared in The New Teen Titans #2. Wizard magazine rated him the 24th greatest villain of all time and the 32nd greatest comic book character of all time. Also, in 2009, Deathstroke was ranked as IGN's 32nd greatest comic book villain of all time.
Originally a villain for the Teen Titans, writers have developed him over the years as an antagonist for the older heroes Batman and Green Arrow as well, establishing parallels between him and Batman and a deep-seated grudge between him and Green Arrow. His role as a villain for Batman and Green Arrow is reflected by his prominence in Batman video games and animated films, and in the Arrow television series.
