There has never been a better time to be playing video games, and if you're already playing, why not get some friends or family in on the fun? The Nintendo Switch is already such a versatile console, but it becomes even more impressive when you consider all of the multiplayer options it has to offer. Not only are classic Nintendo couch co-op games a must, but there are even games that allow you to include up to 12 players, or combine multiple Switches to create some truly unique gameplay stages. Whether you're looking for a puzzle game, a racer, a fighter, or just a chill community simulator, the Switch's library has you more than covered.

From popular titles like Smash Bros and Mario Kart to indie games like Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, these community Switch games are sure to bring people together, while also probably creating a few rifts between some of the more passionate players.

Check out our list of the best couch co-op games for the Switch right now, and vote all your favorite titles up to the top. If the multiplayer modes for some of these games seem too clunky or don't tickle your fancy, vote them down.

  • Super Mario Party is listed (or ranked) 1 on the list The Most Popular Couch Games For The Switch Right Now

Main multiplayer options: 4 players local co-op; online minigame modes

Mario Party is always a blast, but play at your own risk; Like the Monopoly of video games, this one is most likely to create a rift between you and your friends. In all seriousness, Super Mario Party is a fun new spin on the MP formula, and introduces tons of fun new minigames. Although, the most fun I've had with this game personally is the Sound Stage mode, which is basically just a gauntlet of rhythm games.

Super Mario Party supports up to four players in local co-op, and is the first title in the series to introduce online multiplayer (however, this mode is restricted to the minigames only, not the main Party Mode). In addition, in a mode called Toad's Rec Room, players can use multiple Switches to create and navigate multi-console environments.

Main multiplayer options: 4 players local co-op; 12 players local online co-op

Mario Kart is yet another classic Nintendo couch co-op title that you'll find at nearly any party. Like Smash, it's pretty easy for anyone to pick up, but unlike Smash, you're only as good as the shells that get thrown your way. Regardless of how notoriously unfair some of the in-game items are, it all adds to the fun of epic and ridiculous races you'll have with your friends. In fact, Mario Kart is so well-loved that it's the Switch's best-selling game to date worldwide.

Mario Kart 8 has some pretty extensive multiplayer options as well. The options include: up four-player local co-op sharing one Switch, up to twelve players online co-op on one Switch with one or two players locally sharing a screen, two to eight-player online co-op where each player has their own Switch, or up to twelve player LAN play where each player (or two players) has their own Switch, dock, and TV.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is listed (or ranked) 3 on the list The Most Popular Couch Games For The Switch Right Now
    Photo: Nintendo

Main multiplayer options: 4-player couch co-op; up to 8 players via local connection

A crossover brawler that appeals equally to casual fans or hardcore gamers, there isn't a couch or esports arena that hasn't seen a Super Smash Bros. game one time or another. The series is known for its gameplay that's easy for newcomers to enjoy, while still offering a high skill ceiling for those who want to challenge themselves and others. There are five entries in the Smash Bros. series, the most recent being Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Switch in 2018, which boasts the largest roster of playable characters to date.

Since its inception in 1999, the Smash series has allowed four-player couch co-op for every one of its entries. Ultimate is also the first game in the series to allow up to eight players in one match, all connected locally. In addition, Ultimate also features four-player online matches.

  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons is listed (or ranked) 4 on the list The Most Popular Couch Games For The Switch Right Now
    Photo: Nintendo

Main multiplayer options: 4 players local co-op; supports shared controllers

The most recent release on this list, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been a joy for players everywhere who were just itching to fish, furnish, and foster friendships. New Horizons is the fifth main entry in the Animal Crossing series and was the highly anticipated AC release for the Switch. Set on a desert island, players are tasked with building their town from the ground up — literally — thanks to the brand new crafting mechanic.

As for its multiplayer options, New Horizons has both four-player local play and eight-player online play, so now you and all of your friends can go party on one island, together. In what could be considered a tangentially multiplayer experience, players can also download custom designs for clothes and furnishings that other players have created using QR codes.
