A list of the best Washington Wizards of all time. Originally the Chicago Packers, the NBA's first expansion team, the Bullets moved to Baltimore before the 1963 season. After a few lean years in Baltimore, the Bullets started to have some success, drafting some of the best players in team history. These teams were constant contenders and featured Hall of Fame players like Wes Unseld, the only player to win the MVP award as a Bullet, Walt Bellamy and Earl &quot;The Pearl&quot; Monroe. From the late 1960s through late 1970s were a decade of dominance for the Bullets. They were a consistent playoff threat and won a NBA title behind some of the best players in team history in 1978. Overall, the Bullets made the Finals four times in the 1970s&nbsp;In 1997, the team changed its name from the Bullets to the Wizards. While the Wizards haven't had too much success in recent years, the team has had its fair share of great players on its roster. Even the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/the-top-nba-players-of-all-time">greatest player of all time</a>, Michael Jordan, playing his final days in Washington, the team had trouble mustering a playoff threat.At one point, superstar guard GIlbert Arenas was one of the best players in the league. Arenas was one of the most prolific scorers in the league and along with Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler, made the team a perennial playoff team in the mid 2000s. This trio is considered one of the best Wizards history. Today, the Wizards hopes are pinned to star point guard John Wall, the number one overall pick in the 2010 draft. Wall is one of the most exciting players in the league and has the potential to be one of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/top-10-current-nba-players">best in the NBA</a>.This is the list of the best Washington Wizards of all time. Dick Motta is the only head coach to win an NBA Finals for the franchise. Motta won it all in 1978. John Richard Motta (born September 3, 1931) is an American former basketball coach whose career in the National Basketball Association (NBA) spanned 25 years, and he continues to rank among the NBA's all-time top 10 in coaching victories.

Gene Shue

Eugene William Shue (born December 18, 1931) is an American retired professional basketball player and coach in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Shue was one of the top guards of the early days of the NBA and an influential figure in the development of basketball. He is credited with inventing the "Spin Move" while being an early harbinger of other plays and strategies. Shue was an NBA All-Star five consecutive times (1958–62). After his successful playing career, he became a long-serving coach, twice winning NBA Coach of the Year. Throughout his career as player, coach, and executive, Shue was "a specialist at taking over faltering teams."

Bernie Bickerstaff

Bernard Tyrone Bickerstaff (born February 11, 1944) is an American basketball coach and front office executive, currently serving as the Senior Basketball Advisor for the Cleveland Cavaliers. As a coach, he previously worked as the head coach for the NBA's Seattle SuperSonics, Denver Nuggets, Washington Bullets/Wizards, Charlotte Bobcats, and Los Angeles Lakers. He has also been an assistant for the Portland Trail Blazers, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, and Cavaliers. He has served in numerous other NBA front office positions, and has been a consultant for the Harlem Globetrotters.

Jack McMahon

John Joseph McMahon (December 3, 1928 – June 11, 1989) was a professional basketball player and coach. A 6'1" guard from St. John's University, McMahon was selected by the Rochester Royals in the 1952 NBA draft. He played eight seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA), for Rochester and the St. Louis Hawks.
McMahon became a successful coach in the American Basketball League, the NBA and the American Basketball Association (ABA), with eleven seasons as a head coach in the three leagues. His first coaching stint was with the Kansas City Steers of the ABL (1961–62 season). The following season, he began coaching in the NBA with the Chicago Zephyrs in the 1962–63 season. He would also coach the Cincinnati Royals, the San Diego Rockets, and the ABA's Pittsburgh Condors.

Eddie Jordan

Edward Montgomery Jordan (born January 29, 1955) is a retired American professional basketball player and the assistant coach of the Charlotte Hornets. He formerly served as head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, Washington Wizards, and Sacramento Kings in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was also head coach for three seasons at Rutgers University, where he played basketball but left without receiving a degree.

James Clifford Pollard (July 9, 1922 – January 22, 1993) was an American professional basketball player and coach. As a player in the NBA, Pollard was considered one of the best forwards in the 1950s and was known for his leaping ability, earning him the nickname "The Kangaroo Kid". A five-time NBA champion and four-time NBA All-Star, Pollard spent his entire eight-year professional career with the Minneapolis Lakers.
Pollard was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978. He has also been inducted into the Bay Area Hall of Fame, Stanford Hall of Fame, and Pac-12 Hall of Honor.

Leonard Hamilton

James Leonard Hamilton (born August 4, 1948) is an American basketball coach and the current men's basketball head coach at Florida State University. He is a former head coach at Oklahoma State University, the University of Miami, and for the National Basketball Association's Washington Wizards.  In his 30 years as a collegiate head coach, his teams have qualified for nine NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournaments and 11 National Invitation Tournaments, highlighted by appearances in the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight (2018) and Sweet 16 (2011, 2019) with Florida State, as well as a Sweet 16 appearance with Miami (2000). Other career benchmarks include the Big East Conference regular season championship in 2000 and the ACC Tournament title in 2012. While with the NBA's Wizards his team posted a 19–63 record during his sole season with the franchise in 2000–01.

Flip Saunders

Philip Daniel "Flip" Saunders (February 23, 1955 – October 25, 2015) was an American basketball player and coach. During his career, he coached the Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, and Washington Wizards.

James Mario Brovelli (born April 15, 1942) is the former men's basketball head coach of the University of San Francisco (USF) Dons and hall of fame player.

Darrell Walker

Darrell Walker (born March 9, 1961) is an American professional basketball coach and retired player. He is currently head men’s coach at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. At 6'4" (1.93 m) and 180 lb (82 kg), he played as a guard. He attended Chicago's Corliss High School.

Randy Wittman

Randy Scott Wittman (born October 28, 1959) is an American retired basketball player at the guard position and former coach of the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Washington Wizards.

Jim Lynam

James Francis Lynam (born September 15, 1941) is an American former college and professional basketball coach. He coached at the college level for Fairfield University from 1968 to 1970, American University from 1973 to 1978, and St. Joseph's University from 1978 to 1981. In the National Basketball Association (NBA), Lynam coached the San Diego Clippers/Los Angeles Clippers from 1983 to 1985, the Philadelphia 76ers from 1987 to 1992, and the Washington Bullets from 1995 to 97. Lynam compiled a 158–118 record at the college level, and 328–392 in the NBA. He was also Philadelphia's general manager from 1992 to 1994.

Paul Norman Seymour (January 30, 1928 – May 5, 1998) was an American professional basketball player and coach.

K. C. Jones

K. C. Jones (born May 25, 1932) is an American retired professional basketball player and coach. He is best known for his association with the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA), with whom he won eleven of his twelve NBA championships (eight as a player, one as an assistant coach, and two as a head coach).  As a player, he is tied for third for most NBA championships in a career, and is one of three NBA players with an 8-0 record in NBA Finals series. He is the only African-American non-player head coach to win multiple NBA championships. Jones was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1989.

Ed Tapscott

Ed Tapscott (born June 11, 1953 in Washington, D.C.) is the former interim head coach of the NBA's Washington Wizards.

Gar Heard

Garfield Heard (born May 3, 1948) is an American retired professional basketball player and coach.  He played collegiately at the University of Oklahoma and was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics in the third round of the 1970 NBA draft. He had a 15-year NBA career for four teams (the Sonics, the Buffalo Braves/San Diego Clippers, the Chicago Bulls, and the Phoenix Suns).  Heard is best known for a buzzer beater he made to send Game 5 of the 1976 Phoenix–Boston championship series into a third overtime. This feat is commonly known as "The Cow", or "The Shot Heard 'Round the World", in reference to Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem "Concord Hymn", which was written about the Battle of Lexington.

Buddy Jeannette

Harry Edward "Buddy" Jeannette (September 15, 1917 – March 11, 1998) was an American professional basketball player and coach.
Jeannette was widely regarded as the premier backcourt player between 1938 and 1948. He was named to the First Team of the National Basketball League (NBL) four times, and won titles with the NBL's Sheboygan Red Skins in 1943 and Fort Wayne Pistons in 1944 and 1945.  Jeannette also won a title with the American Basketball League's Baltimore Bullets in 1947.
Most of his playing career came prior to the formation of the modern National Basketball Association (NBA) or its predecessor leagues; however Jeannette did serve three years as a player-coach for the original Baltimore Bullets of the Basketball Association of America (BAA).  In the 1948 BAA playoffs, he became the first player-coach to win a professional championship.  After his playing career ended in 1950, he coached the original Bullets for one more season.  He then became the head coach at Georgetown University for four seasons, leading the team to an appearance in the 1953 National Invitation Tournament.
Jeannette returned to the ranks of professional coaching in the NBA to lead the modern Baltimore Bullets twice, once for a full season and once as an interim coach.  He later would coach the American Basketball Association's Pittsburgh Pipers for part of a season.
In 1994, Jeannette was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Jeannette attended Washington and Jefferson College, in Washington, Pennsylvania.

Wes Unseld

Westley Sissel Unseld (born March 14, 1946) is an American former basketball player. He spent his entire NBA career with the Baltimore/Capital/Washington Bullets, and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1988.

Robert John Staak (born December 22, 1947 in Darien, Connecticut) is a former American college basketball and professional basketball coach.

Mike Farmer

Don Michael "Mike" Farmer (born September 26, 1936) is a retired American basketball player and coach.  A 6'7" forward, he was selected with the third pick in the 1958 NBA draft by the New York Knicks after a college career at the University of San Francisco.  Farmer played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for a total of seven seasons with New York, the Cincinnati Royals, and the St. Louis Hawks.  In 1966, he coached nine games for the Baltimore Bullets.
