18 Western Games Fans Of The Wild West Should Play

Updated October 13, 2020 294 votes 59 voters 1k views18 items

One of the best things about video games is their ability to transport us to another time and place, and if you can go somewhere else, why wouldn't you want to go to the Wild West? Those lawless lands full of outlaws and criminals make for some pretty great shooting, so it's not a surprise that dusty towns and old-timey saloons have become a favorite setting among game developers over the years. While plenty of games have featured cowboys in some form or other, this list features some of the best Western games ever made.

If you like shootouts, bank robberies, and especially revenge (as in REALLY like revenge, because almost every single game on this list is about the main character avenging their dead family), then Western video games might be right up your alley.

From new PS4 Westerns like Hunt: Showdown to classics like Gun and even old PC Westerns like The Oregon Trail, vote up all your favorite games that center on the Wild West, and downvote any that just aren't rootin' and tootin' enough for you.

After the success of its predecessor, Red Dead Redemption, this sequel was basically inevitable. Released in 2018, Red Dead Redemption II became an instant favorite, not only living up to the first game, but also improving on it in many ways. The graphics look amazing, and are some of the most realistic players have seen yet.

The game world is also hyper-realistic with weather and day and night cycles, which affect the player both in its art and its gameplay. It may not be able to top the nostalgia factor of the original Red Dead, but the sequel gave players that taste of the Wild West they had been craving since the first came out eight years prior.

  • One of the most well-loved games of the previous console generation, Red Dead Redemption is known for its colorful characters, engaging open world, and of course, its realistic Wild West setting. Rockstar's a developer that's great at making players feel immersed in their worlds, and the sheer detail given to all the maps and quests of Red Dead really made players really feel like they were along for the ride with the beloved protagonist John Marston.

There have been plenty of games set in the Wild West over the years, but this game was the first that truly made it come alive on our screens, hence why it is so beloved to this day. Some seem to forget that it is in fact the second game in the Red Dead series, as its fame has allowed it to eclipse its predecessor.

Gun may share a striking resemblance to the Red Dead games, but they're in no way related. In fact, they were created by different companies. Set in the Old West, it takes place in 1880, and features enough grit to give Arthur Morgan a run for his money.

The graphics still hold up, but the voice acting is what really helped make this one shine. Featuring Ron Perlman, Kris Kristofferson, Lance Henriksen, and other A-list voice actors, it features a rich story ripe with conflict and enough ingenuity to make it one of the better cowboy games of the early '00s.

  • The Western shooter that started a legacy, Red Dead Revolver is the first game in Rockstar's universally beloved Red Dead series. The game was the spiritual successor to the arcade shoot 'em up Gun.Smoke, and therefore has much more of an arcade feel than its successors.

Players make their way through a series of levels, each of which ends with a traditional boss fight, and players can explore a hub town called Brimstone (very subtle) in between each level. It's unfortunately forgotten more than the rest of the series, so it's worth giving some love if you have an old Xbox or PS2 lying around.
