Nintendo has always been known for producing some great role-playing games, and the Wii U RPGs on this list certainly back that claim. It's tough to say that Xenoblade Chronicles X isn't the best Wii U RPG- the scope of the game is massive, and scale and variety of enemies to battle is really impressive. Xenoblade Chronicles X

Xenoblade Chronicles X, known in Japan as XenobladeX, is an upcoming Japanese action role-playing video game by developer Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo for the Wii U. The game is part of the Xeno series of video games, serving as a spiritual successor to Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii. It is scheduled for release on April 29, 2015 in Japan, and sometime in 2015 for North America, Europe and Australia.

Super Paper Mario

Super Paper Mario is a 2007 platform action role-playing game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo for the Wii video game console. It is the third game in the Paper Mario series of Mario role-playing games.
The game departs from the gameplay featured in earlier Paper Mario titles, primarily featuring side scrolling platforming gameplay with role-playing elements. The player controls Mario and later Princess Peach, Bowser and Luigi, who each possess different abilities. The majority of the gameplay revolves around Mario's learned ability to "flip" between dimensions, which consists of switching between 3D and 2D perspectives in each level, allowing the player to maneuver around obstacles impassable in different views. The plot follows the four characters' quest to collect the eight Pure Hearts in order to prevent Count Bleck, the main antagonist, from destroying the universe.
The game was well-received, accumulating aggregate critical scores of 85.16% and 85% on GameRankings and Metacritic with many critics praising the game's humorous plot and writing. It has sold 2.28 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling games on the Wii.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a cyberpunk-themed first-person action role-playing stealth video game developed by Eidos Montreal and published by Square Enix, which also produced the game's CGI sequences. Originally released in August 2011 for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, it is the third game in the Deus Ex series, and a prequel to the original game released in 2000. An OS X version, Deus Ex: Human Revolution Ultimate Edition, was released on April 26, 2012 by Feral Interactive; it includes the original game and The Missing Link downloadable content. An improved version of the game for PC and consoles, including a Wii U version, was released on October 22, 2013 as Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut. Feral Interactive released the OS X version of Director's Cut on April 15, 2014. The Director's Cut includes The Missing Link as part of the main plot.
The game is set in 2027, 25 years before the first game and 45 years before the second game, at a time when multinational corporations have grown in power beyond the control of national governments. The game follows Adam Jensen, the newly hired security manager at Sarif Industries, a growing biotechnology firm.

Secret of Mana

Secret of Mana, originally released in Japan as Seiken Densetsu 2, is a 1993 action role-playing game developed and published by Square for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It is the sequel to the 1991 game Seiken Densetsu, released in North America as Final Fantasy Adventure and in Europe as Mystic Quest, and it was the first Seiken Densetsu title to be marketed as part of the Mana series rather than the Final Fantasy series. Set in a high fantasy universe, the game follows three heroes as they attempt to prevent an empire from conquering the world with the power of an ancient flying warship.
Rather than using a turn-based battle system like contemporaneous role-playing games, Secret of Mana features real-time battles. The game has a unique Ring Command menu system, which pauses the action and allows the player to make decisions in the middle of battle. An innovative cooperative multiplayer system allows a second or third player to drop in and out of the game at any time. Secret of Mana was directed and designed by Koichi Ishii, programmed primarily by Nasir Gebelli, and produced by veteran Square designer Hiromichi Tanaka.

Pandora's Tower, known as Pandora's Tower: Until I Return to Your Side in Japan, is an action role-playing video game developed by Ganbarion and published by Nintendo in Japan, Europe, and Australia, and by Xseed Games in North America, for the Wii video game console. It was released in Japan on May 26, 2011, April 12, 2012 in Australia and April 13, 2012 in Europe, and in North America on April 16, 2013.

Dragon Quest X

Dragon Quest X s a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. It is the tenth mainline entry in the Dragon Quest series. It was originally released for the Wii in 2012, and was later ported for Wii U, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, and Nintendo 3DS, all of which support cross-platform play. Outside of a discontinued Windows version in Chinese, the game was not localized outside of Japan.

Child of Light

Child of Light is a platforming role-playing video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft for Microsoft Windows, the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360 and Xbox One in April 2014, and was released on PlayStation Vita in July 2014. The game was later released on Nintendo Switch on 11 October 2018; the announcement of this release also teased a sequel. It is powered by UbiArt Framework. The game's story takes place in the fictional land of Lemuria. Aurora, a child who wakes up in Lemuria after dying from a mysterious illness, must bring back the sun, the moon, and the stars that are all being held captive by the Queen of the Night in order to return home. Battles with enemies use a system similar to the active-time battle system found in games like the Final Fantasy series and the Grandia series.[4] The player can control up to two characters during battle, and swap these two with waiting characters. Up to three enemies can appear during battle.

Paper Mario

Paper Mario, known in Japanese as Mario Story and originally known as Super Mario RPG 2, is a role-playing video game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 game console. It was first released in Japan on August 11, 2000, in North America on February 5, 2001, and in Europe and Australia on October 5, 2001. Paper Mario was re-released for Nintendo's Wii Virtual Console in July 2007 as well as Wii U Virtual Console in 2015.
Paper Mario is set in the Mushroom Kingdom as the protagonist Mario tries to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, whom has lifted her castle into the sky and has successfully defeated his foe after stealing the Star Rod from Star Haven and making himself invulnerable to any attacks. To save Mushroom Kingdom and get back Peach and the castle and defeat Bowser and his henchwoman Kammy Koopa, Mario must locate seven "Star Spirits" to negate the effects of the stolen Star Rod, which Bowser uses to render himself invincible. The player controls Mario and a number of partners to solve puzzles in the game's overworld and defeat enemies in a turn-based battle system.

Mother

Mother is a 1989 Japanese role-playing video game developed by Ape and published by Nintendo for the Famicom. The game is modeled on Dragon Quest series gameplay but is set in a late 20th century United States, unlike its fantasy genre contemporaries. Mother follows the young Ninten as he uses his great-grandfather's psychic powers to fight hostile, formerly inanimate objects and other enemies. The game uses random encounters to enter a menu-based, first-person perspective battle system. It is the first game in the Mother series.
Writer and copywriter Shigesato Itoi pitched the game concept to Shigeru Miyamoto when visiting Nintendo for other business. Though Miyamoto denied the proposal at first, he eventually gave Itoi a development team. The game was released in Japan on July 27, 1989. A North American version was localized into English but abandoned as commercially unviable. A copy of this prototype was later found and circulated on the Internet as EarthBound Zero.
Reviewers noted the game's similarities with the Dragon Quest series and its simultaneous "parody" of the genre's tropes.

Darksiders II

Darksiders II is an action role-playing hack and slash video game developed by Vigil Games and published by THQ. It is the sequel to Darksiders and was released in August 2012 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and as a launch title for Wii U upon the console's Australian, European, and North American release in November 2012. A remastered port for the PlayStation 4 is in development by Nordic Games.

Mass Effect 3

Mass Effect 3 is a 2012 science fiction action role-playing third person shooter video game developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U. Officially announced on December 11, 2010, the game was released March 6, 2012 and marks the final chapter in the Mass Effect trilogy of video games, completing the story of Commander Shepard. A Wii U version was announced during Nintendo's conference at E3 2012. The Wii U port was developed by Australian developer Straight Right, and was released as a Wii U launch game under the title Mass Effect 3: Special Edition.
The combat system in Mass Effect 3 has been changed and refined. In particular, the cover system has been improved, there are more options for moving around the battlefield and scoring instant melee kills, more conventional grenades are available and an improved artificial intelligence is introduced. A four player multiplayer co-op mode is also available in game. Gameplay in Mass Effect 3 is influenced by decisions made in Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, for players who have completed those games.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, known in Japan as Mario & Luigi RPG 2x2, is a role-playing video game developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS handheld game console in 2005. It is the second game in the Mario & Luigi series, and is the sequel to Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga for the Game Boy Advance. The game was followed by Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, released in 2009.
Although the sequel to Superstar Saga, the game's plot is unrelated to that of its predecessor with an emphasis on the time-traveling theme, which involves the protagonists traveling between the past and present of the Mushroom Kingdom. The adventure follows Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi as they search for Princess Peach, who has been abducted by an alien species known as the Shroobs. The gameplay centers on the co-operation between the quartet, who must use their specific qualities and skills to solve puzzles and thus progress through the game and features multiple role-playing game elements, but with a turn-based battle system focused on timing accuracy. The game is considerably darker in tone than its predecessor, especially in its plot and themes.

Monster Hunter Tri

Monster Hunter Tri is the third console installment in the Monster Hunter franchise, developed by Capcom and released for the Wii in Japan on August 1, 2009. Monster Hunter Tri was released on April 20, 2010 in North America, April 23 in Europe, and April 29 in Australia.
The game was originally planned to be a PlayStation 3 title, but due to high development costs for that console Capcom instead decided to develop it for the Wii. Prior to its debut, a demo of Monster Hunter Tri was included with Japanese copies of Monster Hunter G. A special bundle was also released on August 1 featuring the game packaged with a black Wii console and a Classic Controller Pro. On August 3, 2009, Capcom issued a press release confirming the game would be localized for North American and European markets. On February 24, 2010, Capcom announced that online play would be provided free of charge. Although now, online play is no longer supported. In America and Europe, separate servers are used and Wii Speak is supported, making the first game in the franchise to include native VoIP capability. It was a critical and commercial success.

Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara is a 2013 video game compilation by Capcom released as a digital download for the Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows (via Steam). It includes two arcade games based on the Dungeons & Dragons franchise: Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom (1993) and Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara (1996).

Terraria is an action-adventure sandbox indie video game series, developed by game studio Re-Logic and released on Microsoft Windows, Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, Windows Phone, Android, and iOS. The game features exploration, crafting, construction, and combat with a variety of creatures in a randomly generated 2D world.
Originally released for Microsoft Windows on May 16, 2011. The game is estimated to have sold about 50,000 copies during its first day of release, with over 17,000 players online at the same time during the first day's peak. 200,000 copies of the game were sold, making it the top-selling game on Steam for the week, ahead of The Witcher 2 and Portal 2. It remained number one on Steam for the first six days of its release, and as of January 2013 has sold over 2,500,000 copies. Terraria became DRM-free on October 2, 2014 when it was released on GOG.com.
The game was released on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade at the end of March 2013 with exclusive content. The PS3 European and Australian release date was May 15, 2013. It was announced on March 28, 2013 that Terraria is coming to the PlayStation Vita. It was released on December 11, 2013.

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together is a Japanese tactical role-playing game created by Quest. The game was originally released in 1995 on the Super Famicom in Japan and then re-released on the Sega Saturn in 1996 and the PlayStation in 1997. An enhanced port of the game developed by the original development team was released on February 15, 2011 for the PSP. In some regions, notably Japan, the remake was retitled as Tactics Ogre: Wheel of Fate.
Though Let Us Cling Together is the second entry released in the Ogre Battle franchise, it featured dramatically different gameplay than its predecessor. While Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen was more akin to a grand strategy RPG, Let Us Cling Together was a more intimate squad-based isometric tactical RPG. Let Us Cling Together, then, launched a sub-series within the franchise with Tactics Ogre being used to distinguish the two forms of gameplay in later sequels.

Minecraft

Minecraft is a sandbox independent video game originally created by Swedish programmer Markus "Notch" Persson and later developed and published by the Swedish company Mojang. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft allow players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. Other activities in the game include exploration, gathering resources, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival modes where the player must acquire resources to build the world and maintain health, a creative mode where players have unlimited resources to build with and the ability to fly, and an adventure mode where players play custom maps created by other players.
The alpha version was publicly released for PC on May 17, 2009, and after gradual updates, the full version was released on November 18, 2011. A version for Android was released a month earlier on October 7, and an iOS version was released on November 17, 2011.

Shin Megami Tensei is a role-playing video game from Atlus that was originally released on October 30, 1992 for the Super Famicom. Loosely based on Megami Tensei, a novel and Famicom game series in Japan, Shin Megami Tensei would be the first of many titles in the franchise released by Atlus. A direct sequel, Shin Megami Tensei II, was released in 1994. A third game, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, was released in 2003. The most recent installment, Shin Megami Tensei IV, was released in 2013. Two non-numbered titles, Shin Megami Tensei if... and Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, were released in 1994 and 2009, respectively.Shin Megami Tensei has grown a large and loyal following around the world with additional game titles for consumer consoles and handheld systems.
Previously unavailable in English, a localized iOS version was released in North America on March 18, 2014.

Yakuza

Yakuza, originally released in Japan as Like a Dragon is an action-adventure game developed and published by Sega for the PlayStation 2. Yakuza was released in Japan in 2005, and outside Japan the following year. The story follows a yakuza named Kazuma Kiryu, who, after spending ten years in jail for a crime he did not commit, learns that 10 billion yen has been stolen from the Tojo clan, which the criminal underworld is searching for. He finds an orphaned girl Haruka who is being targeted, as she is believed to have the key for the Tojo clan's lost money, and he resolves to protect her. The game takes place in Kamurocho, which is a realistic recreation of Tokyo's Kabukicho.
Yakuza is an open world action-adventure game with RPG elements: the player gains experience from combat, which can be used to level up Kazuma's stats and increase his fighting capabilities. In order to finance the game's expensive production, Sega contracted a tie-in campaign with famous Japanese companies.
Yakuza was first announced in August 2005, although its genesis was in 2003, when Sega approached novelist Hase Seishu with the story of Yakuza, who was hired to help write the script.

Unepic is a computer game which was released on September 30, 2011. The game was developed in Barcelona, Spain by Francisco Téllez de Meneses and various collaborators.
Unepic is a role-playing platformer computer game. It has non-linear gameplay, and was inspired by the MSX game Maze of Galious. The player takes the role of Daniel, a modern gamer who is transported to Harnakon, a medieval-fantasy castle.
Unepic has been translated into over 10 languages, and is available on Steam, Desura, GOG.com, and Wii U.
