The world of anime has plenty of villains - but many of them are simply small-time criminals who have little impact on the overall plot. Even if they do have a vital role, they aren't necessarily ultimate anime villains - the ones who the heroes must face at the end of the series.
Some of these big bad anime villains are purposefully or inadvertently responsible for just about everything that happens in the series - that certainly holds true of Sousuke Aizen of Bleach and Inuyasha's Demon of the Shikon no Tama. Others, like Mayor Takeshi Hirokawa of Parasyte, may not have caused every problem, but they sure as heck took advantage of the ones they didn't cause.

If something happened in Bleach, chances are high that Sōsuke Aizen is somehow responsible - that's why he's one of the most notorious villains in anime history. He wants to overthrow Soul Society and run things himself, but he also has his hooks in plenty of other events, ranging from bringing Ichigo's parents together and allowing them to create him in the first place to controlling Yhwach's behavior. For better or worse, no one has more of an impact on Bleach's storyline than Aizen does.Is this ultimate villain awesome?
Father - 'Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood'Photo: Studio Bones
At first, it looks like the primary antagonists of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are the homunculi. While each of them certainly presents a major challenge to the heroes, they're all united by one thing - their loyalty to Father. He is called Father because he created the homunculi, he was born from a combination of the essence of the Eye and Hoenheim's blood. His goal is to to control the eye of god, essentially becoming a perfect being that's more powerful than a god. Stopping him will take an all-out brawl, where most of the cast - including one of Father's homunculi children - take him on.Is this ultimate villain awesome?
Demon of the Shikon no Tama - 'Inuyasha'Photo: Sunrise
If you thought Naraku was the true antagonist of Inuyasha, you thought wrong. In fact, every single one of Naraku's actions was controlled by the Demon of the Shikon no Tama. This dragon demon resides within the Shikon no Tama, and has been manipulating Naraku's behavior in order to ensure its own survival. All of the suffering that Inuyasha, Kikyo, Kagome, and the rest of the cast endure at Naraku's hands is entirely thanks to it.Is this ultimate villain awesome?
The Kingdom of Marley - 'Attack on Titan'Photo: Wit Studio
The ultimate villains of the Attack on Titan universe are the mindless titans who devour human flesh...right? As the series progresses, it becomes clear that things are a lot more complicated than that. The series isn't over yet, so it's possible that things go even further down the rabbit hole, but right now it seems like the ultimate villain is the Kingdom of Marley.
In the past, the Kingdom of Marley was subjugated by the Eldians, but now the tables have turned, and the Kingdom of Marley is controlling seven out of the nine Titan powers. They intend to use those powers to destroy the Eldian people entirely. Most of the protagonists are Eldians, and they are fighting for their survival. Is this ultimate villain awesome?
