The Best Binge Drinking Memoirs

607 votes 232 voters 2.5k views

For some, drinking is a social activity. Most people can have one or two cocktails at a work event, or a glass of wine with dinner. But for many alcoholics and binge drinkers, one drink is too many, and a thousand is never enough. Alcohol memoirs that document the author's struggle with booze have become a sub-genre of their own. The books on this list will stock your bookshelves with hilarious, shocking, and tragic stories about the downward spiral of alcohol addiction.

The writers who have poured their souls into these memoirs about drinking are, for the most part, on the road to recovery. Some of these books are hilarious - Tucker Max's Assholes Finish First should be required reading for any college frat guy, and Carrie Fisher's honest, funny approach to writing Wishful Drinking about how her addictions controlled her life while she was filming Star Wars is a must-read for any comedy fan.

Other books, however, were written to demonstrate the dangers of drinking too much. Koren Zailckas's harrowing memoir, Smashed: Story of a Drunken Girlhood showcases what can happen to young women who start drinking at a very young age, and Dry by Augusten Burroughs is an incredibly accurate depiction of what it's like to be a young alcoholic in New York City.
