Former Olympic decathlon gold medalist / current Kardashian family patriarch Bruce Jenner sat down with Diane Sawyer on Friday, April 24th, at 9 PM E.T. During the special two-hour edition of 20/20, "Bruce Jenner - The Interview," Jenner addressed rumors, speculation, and the truth about his life in the spotlight, his recent divorce, and his highly-publicized transition to becoming a woman. He tells Diane Sawyer very plainly, "I am a woman." In addition to confirming his transition to female, Jenner described when he first felt confusion about his gender identity, how his family members reacted to the news and the positivity he hopes to bring to the world by sharing his story.
Jenner has been married three times. With his first wife, Chrystie Crownover (1972-1981), he has two children, Burt and Casey Jenner. With second-wife Linda Thompson (1981-1986), he is father to Brandon and Brody Jenner. He married Kris Kardashian in 1991. The couple has two biological daughters, Kendall and Kylie, and Jenner is step-father to Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, and Rob Kardashian. Bruce Jenner and Kris Kardashian separated in 2013 and divorced in March 2015.
For months, the public has been wondering: Is Bruce Jenner a woman? Will he reveal that he is transitioning to female? Will Bruce Jenner come out as a trans? About his family, Jenner has said, "Those are the only ones I'm concerned with. I can't let myself hurt them." This list collects the best quotations and notable quotes from the Bruce Jenner interview, along with transcription and video clips when available. Are You a Woman?
Answering the question on everyone's minds, Bruce Jenner says clearly that he does identify as a woman. He explains that while he was born biologically male, the female side is who he is.
Diane Sawyer: Are you a woman?
Bruce Jenner: Yes, for all intents and purposes, I am. People look at me differently. They see you as this "macho male." But my heart and my soul and everything that I do in life, it is part of me. That female side is part of me. It's who I am. I was not genetically born that way. As of now, I have all the male parts and all that kind of stuff and so in that way, we're different. Okay, but we still identify as female and that's very hard for Bruce Jenner to say. Because why? I don't want to disappoint people.
We're Going to Change the World
When asked if this is just a stunt to promote his Kardashians reality show, Bruce scoffs at the idea. He does not want to promote anything. He wants to change the world for the better.
Bruce Jenner: They're going to say I'm doing this for publicity, for a show. Oh my God, there's lots of shows out there... But what I'm doing is going to do some good and we're going to change the world.
I Had the Story
Bruce offers a unique perspective when reflecting on his time on Keeping Up With the Kardashians reality show. He realizes that it was his story, his truth, that could truly change the world rather than what the rest of his family members were doing.
Diane Sawyer: Of all the years you were on the show...
Bruce Jenner: I had the story.
I Will Always Be Your Dad
Three of Bruce's eldest children appear on camera during the interview to talk about their reaction to his news. The Kardashian children were asked to comment and, with the exception of Bruce's daughters Kendal and Kylie, declined.
Brandon Jenner: Obviously there are parts of it that aren't necessarily easy, I'm just doing my best to cope with what's going on. When I see my dad as a woman, it might be a little shocking at first.
Brody Jenner: I thought, 'It finally all makes sense.'
Casey Jenner: What do you want us to call you? You can call me dad. I will always be your dad.
