The Oscars, The Emmys, The People’s Choice Awards, The Critic Choice Awards, The Golden Globe Awards. So many award shows that reward our favorite films and television programs from the past year. The Golden Globes ceremony will take place on January 10th. Currently, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association hands out 25 awards for best achievement in both film and television, plus the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement in Motion Pictures. But should there be more Globes handed out? Here a few possible new Golden Globes categories that we think should be taken into consideration.
The Golden Globe Ceremony is not as buttoned-up as the Academy Awards and not as loose as The People’s Choice Awards. It rests somewhere in the middle, however, the final results do often predict which contenders will take home an Emmy or an Oscar. There is no doubt that more technical categories like Costume, Makeup, and Visual Effects have an enormous impact on the final aesthetic of what a motion picture will ultimately look like. Perhaps it’s time for the Golden Globes to reward those important aspects of moviemaking?
Typically, we see the same “Award Show Bait” films at all the ceremonies. This year films like Spotlight, Carol, and Brooklyn will contend for cinema’s top prizes. However, we can’t overlook that those same movies do not generally do as well at the box office, nor do as many people watching at home actually get a chance to see them in a theater. Why not hand out a Golden Globe to films that generate more audience attention? Perhaps adding a category for Best Action Motion Picture or Best Sci-Fi/Horror Motion Picture would draw better ratings?
