In a powerful New York Times essay published in 2018, author Junot Díaz revealed he tried to commit suicide his senior year of high school by swallowing his brother's cancer medication. This was in part due to trauma he suffered as the result of being sexually assaulted as a child.
Díaz received a college acceptance letter the following day, and he credits that as helping deter him from attempting suicide again.
