Some celebrities have a true identical twin, DNA-style. Yet even those without sibling look-alikes via genetics still have a corollary out in the world - and sometimes that duplicate is another famous face. Scientists say it's likely most of us have a doppelgänger (someone who at least closely resembles us, if not exactly), so it's not surprising that celebrities have almost-clones, too.

Celebrities who look alike seem to have a sense of humor about it, sharing their favorite funny mistaken-identity stories in interviews. And most say they good-naturedly go along with it when anyone thinks they're another VIP.

  • For a 2021 Empire magazine joint interview to celebrate the 20th anniversaries of the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings film franchises, Daniel Radcliffe and Elijah Wood talked about frequently being mistaken for each other. Radcliffe said even though he doesn't think they look the same, people probably can't differentiate between the two because "the idea of us is exactly the same."

He also recalled a time he was on a red carpet in Japan and someone gave him a photo of Wood to sign:

My first instinct was to say, "Oh, I'm not... So I can't..." but I thought the language barrier would be too much. So the quickest way to deal with it was just to write, "I am not Elijah Wood, [signed] Daniel Radcliffe," and then hope somebody translated that for him later.

Wood said he has "on multiple occasions been applauded for my bravery on stage in Equus." (Radcliffe, as Alan Strang in Peter Shaffer's play, had a nude scene in the show.)

And if you haven't seen it, a GIF of the two actors' faces morphing into each other is mesmerizing.

  • Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films) told James Corden on The Late Late Show in 2017 that he's often mistaken for singer Ed Sheeran:

It's kind of 50/50 now... If someone stops me, it could go either way. I could be Ed or I could be me.

    He usually just plays along.

  • Actor Ian Somerhalder said on The Kelly Clarkson Show that his doppelgänger, actor Rob Lowe, gave Somerhalder's wife, actress Nikki Reed, a clear glimpse into the future:

He walked up to my wife... at I think it was a Golden Globes party or something...  She had never met him... He grabbed her face and said, "This is what you're going to be looking at in 15 years." And he was so sweet and respectful about it.

  • Isla Fisher told Jimmy Kimmel in 2017 that sometimes she corrects people when they mistake her for fellow actress Amy Adams, but not always, especially when the person is another celebrity she happens to idolize. At a Vanity Fair Oscars party, Fisher recalled, she ran into Hollywood royalty:

The crowds parted, and there was Lady Gaga, and she's heading right towards me. And she says, "Thank you, your performance in American Hustle, Amy, was..." And I'm thinking, "Oh my gosh, it's Lady Gaga. I love her so much. I don't want to tell her the truth." So I just gracefully thanked her, bowed my head. And then she wants to talk about the performance. And now I'm thinking, "I don't want to be a liar." And then I look over her shoulder and there's Amy Adams walking into the party. So I'm like, "There's Isla Fisher... She's not even nominated for anything. What's she doing here?"
