12 Characters Who Could Become The Next Hokage After Naruto

After years of hard work and hoping, Naruto Uzumaki finally achieves his dream of becoming the Hokage - the strongest and most capable ninja in the village of Konohagakure. But Naruto can't be the Hokage forever. Eventually, somebody is going to have to take his place - though hopefully, it'll be when he's enjoying his retirement after he's had a long career full of accomplishments.

Who should be the Hokage after Naruto? There are plenty of strong contenders. His two right hand men, Shikamaru Nara and Sasuke Uchiha, could both make great leaders for completely different reasons. If Naruto retires by the time they're also ready to hang up their headbands, their children Shikadai and Sarada could do the job just as well. Naruto's own son, Boruto, might not want the job right now, but he might prove talented enough to take it on. His former teammate Sakura Haruno is another strong contender - she clearly knows what Konoha needs to prosper, since she's already doing things like starting a mental health center for children.

Vote up the characters who you think should be the 8th Hokage, and vote down the ones you don't think are worthy of consideration.

  • Once a bratty kid who followed Naruto around like a puppy, Konohamaru Sarutobi has come a long way. He's the grandson of the Third Hokage, which means that he's got lineage to back him up. He's one of the strongest jonin in the village, and he served as Naruto's apprentice. He's skilled in bukijutsu, taijutsu, ninjutsu, summoning jutsu, sealing jutsus, and more.

Prowess and experience aside, Konohamaru has stated repeatedly that he wants the job. His ambitions mean that he's likely to take the job seriously, and give it his all.

  • Remember when Tobirama succeeded Hashirama as the second Hokage? While Naruto and Shikamaru aren't related, the two pairs have a lot in common. Just like Hashirama, Naruto is charismatic, cheerful, and inspiring to those around him. Just like Tobirama, Shikamaru is an intensely practical person with an unparalleled strategic mind.

Shikamaru would be a very different kind of hokage than Naruto is, but he'd likely do a great job. That said, there are some issues. Shikamaru would probably be reluctant to take the role unless he had to - the public eye isn't exactly his thing. Also, he's married to the sister of the Kazekage, so while that doesn't rule him out, Shikamaru's new role would require some serious political discussions with Sunagakure.

    Sarada Uchiha

Whether the task should fall to Sarada or one of her parents depends largely on when Naruto steps down from his role as hokage, but so long as Sarada has time to grow up first, Konoha will be in good hands with the heir to the Uchiha clan.

Like many characters on this list, Sarada Uchiha has expressed a desire to become the hokage. It's hard to say right now just how strong she'll become - like all the other kids in her generation, she's still working on her powers. But with her impressive skills in both Fire and Lightning Release, and her ever-increasing command of her Sharingan Eye, it's clear that she's one of the stronger ninja in her generation.

Strength aside, she's a sincere person who takes her work seriously. She still has a little work to do when it comes to listening to other peoples' points of view, but she's already making strides in that direciton.

  • Already known as Konoha's Second Hokage, Sasuke Uchiha already works closely with Naruto, and is deeply familiar with the requirements of the job. With his Rinnegan and his Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, he's every bit as powerful as Naruto is, and could easily qualify for the job based on strength alone.

Some might think that Sasuke shouldn't be hokage because he went through a period where he was against Konoha as an institution, and he expressed that with violence. But Sasuke has since mended his ways and shown his dedication to his home village. The fact that he once turned against the Leaf is actually part of why he's a good candidate. He's keenly aware of the flaws and corruption that plague Konoha, so he's more likely to take decisive action on problems before they spiral out of control.
