The Most Violent Classic Video Games

Almost every game that’s available for play at this moment is somewhat violent. Even strategy and sports games have a little violence, if they aren’t filled to the brim with it. In the 90s, the public outrage toward violent video games reached a fever pitch with the release of Mortal Kombat. At the time MK was considered to be not only the most violent, but also the most realistic arcade game on the market (that is if you consider a demon ninja named “Scorpion” with the ability to shoot a grappling hook with pinpoint accuracy realistic), and parents flipped out.

But that wasn’t the first time that parents and other square adults showed off their inability to understand that violence in gaming isn’t the same as real life violence. With this list, we’ve put together some of the most violent classic games to warp your young minds.

After putting together this list, it’s interesting to see what the public found to be violent in different eras of gaming. At one point, a game like Death Race was considered to be hyper violent, and it’s just white lines running into other white lines are shaped like people (but only if you squint really hard). We’ve proud to say that we’ve come a long way from this representation of vehicular homicide and can now run down electronic avatars in full 3D. Vote on the classic video game that you think was the most violent, and if you can think of a game that would fit right in on this list, go ahead and add it!
