During the Victorian Era, Great Britain experienced wealth and prosperity; the nation's imperial reach brought European style and technology to the whole world. However, modern people sometimes assume Victorians were stern and humorless, like sticks in the mud. Black-and-white photos only add to this perception, but colorized Victorian era photos present a different narrative.

Color brings a much-needed vivacity to often mischaracterized periods of time, shortening the distance between today's world and the past. In fact, these retouched historical images create a more balanced portrayal of the 19th century. Not everyone frowned in their portraits, and some people even posed for risqué shots.

After looking at these snapshots, you'll likely reevaluate how you view the Victorian period.
