It seems that every year, come Oscar season, there's an even more insane number of comic book films released, and, more and more there's been a lot of conversation about honoring actors in these movies with little gold statues, courtesy of the Academy. Many comic book films have received Oscar buzz, but, in the end, many of the big screen adaptations and their stars don't get the respect they deserve from Hollywood's biggest awards show.
Historically, comic book films don't end up on the list of Oscar winners, they just don't. Up until Heath Ledger's (incredible and well deserved) posthumous Best Supporting Actor nomination and subsequent win, people didn't even consider it a remote possibility. Yes, Al Pacino received a nom for his role in Dick Tracy, but that was a very different time, especially for comic book films.
Now, we live in an era where these superhero films are standard. They're Hollywood currency and the lifeblood of summer tentpole profits. So where is the awards love? Well, hopefully times are changing. We've decided to take a look back at past comic films where actors and actresses excelled and maybe... just maybe... should have gotten a little more attention from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. These are the times the Academy Awards overlooked great performances in comic book films. Vote up the actors and actresses you think were most deserving of Oscar gold! Did we miss your favorite performance? Make sure to let us know in the comments section.
