As a country, the United States has encouraged entrepreneurship throughout much of its history. The state of Arkansas is no exception to this rule, and new businesses are started in Arkansas daily, ranging from corporations to LLCs to partnerships to sole proprietorships. Alltel

Alltel Wireless was a wireless service provider, primarily based in the United States. Before acquisitions by Verizon Wireless and AT&T, it served 34 states and had approximately 13 million subscribers. As a regulatory condition of the acquisition by Verizon, a small portion of Alltel was spun off and continued to operate under the same name in six states, mostly in rural areas. Following the merger, Alltel remained the ninth largest wireless telecommunications company in the United States, with approximately 800,000 customers. On January 22, 2013, AT&T announced they were acquiring what remained of Alltel from Atlantic Tele-Network for $780 million in cash.
At its peak, Alltel operated a network in 34 states, with a wireless coverage footprint comprising the largest network in the United States by area. The company focused on small to medium size cities providing wireless services to residential and business customers in all 50 states through roaming agreements with Verizon and Sprint. These agreements gave Alltel customers access to nationwide service, while providing those carriers coverage in rural areas.

Arvest Bank

It has been reported by many sources including Forbes that Arvest Bank is owned and controlled by the Walton family of Walmart fame, although Arvest is operated separately from the famous retail chain. Sam Walton's son Jim runs the company. In 2003, Jim, his brother and his mother owned a combined stake of 96.14% of the company.
Since its early days set in the backdrop of 1965 small-town America, Arvest Bank has evolved from a group of small banks to a big bank. The bank has experienced significant growth both in its size and depth of products since its early days. Arvest claims to have kept its community foundation while offering customers the convenience and technological advantages of a larger corporation, keeping stability, sound financial practices and customer service at the heart of its mission.
The Arvest story began in 1961 with Sam & Helen WALTON's purchase of The Bank of Bentonville in Bentonville, Arkansas, which was followed in 1963 with the acquisition of a small bank, the Bank of Pea Ridge, in the nearby town of Pea Ridge, Ark.

Dillard's, Inc. is an upscale department store chain in the United States, with 299 stores in 28 states. Headquartered in Little Rock, Arkansas, Dillard's locations are concentrated in Texas and Florida; with a major presence in other states including Arizona, Iowa, Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Missouri, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, North Carolina, Virginia, Idaho, South Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois. Dillard's also maintains a minor footprint in California and Montana. Its main competitors are Belk, Macy's, and Bon-Ton, regional nameplate stores such as Younkers, JCPenney, Kohl's, and Sears, while its rivals in the upscale market include Bloomingdale's, Lord and Taylor, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Von Maur.

J. B. Hunt

J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. is a trucking and transportation company that was founded by Johnnie Bryan Hunt, and based in the Northwest Arkansas city of Lowell. J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. was incorporated in Arkansas on August 10, 1961 and originally started with five trucks and seven refrigerated trailers to support the original rice hull business. By 1983, J.B. Hunt had grown into the 80th largest trucking firm in the U.S. and earned $63 million in revenue. At that time J.B. Hunt was operating 550 tractors, 1,049 trailers, and had roughly 1,050 employees. Today this company has grown into one of the largest transportation companies in the United States with annual revenues of over $3 billion. J.B. Hunt primarily operates large semi-trailer trucks, and provides transportation services throughout the continental United States, Canada and Mexico. The company currently employs over 16,000 employees and operates in excess of 12,000 trucks. Over 47,000 trailers and containers can be found in the company's fleet.
J.B. Hunt's major competitors in the United States are YRC Worldwide, Inc., Swift Transportation, Schneider National, Werner Enterprises, and Hub Group.

Lion Oil

Lion Oil Company was established in 1922. Thomas Harry Barton was instrumental in the development of the company.
In 1955, Lion Oil was sold to the Monsanto Company along with what is now El Dorado Chemical Company. Lion Oil is the only oil refinery Monsanto has owned. Lion Oil was later sold by Monsanto to Tosco.
In 1985, Lion was struggling and on the verge of shutting down and was sold by Tosco to a partnership of Ergon Refining of Jackson, Mississippi, and a group of local investors. This is how it acquired the oil refinery in El Dorado, Arkansas.
In March 2011, Delek US Holdings, Inc. of Brentwood, Tennessee acquired Ergon’s 53.7% majority equity interest; total equity ownership by Delek increased to 88.3%; on April 29, 2011 Delek US became the new operator of Lion Oil.
In October 2011, Delek US Holdings, Inc. acquired the remaining 11.7% interest to increase its equity interest in Lion Oil to 100%.
Lion Oil continues as a petroleum supplier with its headquarters in Brentwood.

Murphy Oil

Murphy Oil Corporation is an American international oil and gas company, incorporated in 1950 as Murphy Corporation, that conducts business through various operating subsidiaries. Murphy Oil produces oil and natural gas in the United States, Canada, Malaysia, the United Kingdom and Republic of the Congo and conducts exploration activities worldwide. Murphy also has an interest in a Canadian synthetic oil operation, two ethanol production facilities in the United States and one petroleum refinery in the United Kingdom. In 2013, the company spun off its retail marketing gasoline station chain, Murphy USA. The Company has announced its intention to sell its U.K. marketing assets. Murphy Oil Corporation is headquartered in El Dorado, Arkansas, and has over 8,600 employees worldwide. The Company's common stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "MUR."

Riceland Foods

Riceland Foods, Inc., is a farmer-owned agricultural marketing cooperative and the world's largest miller and marketer of rice. The company was founded in 1921 with headquarters in Stuttgart, Arkansas. Riceland owns and operates seven rice mills, including the largest rice mill in the world, located in Jonesboro, Arkansas. It is estimated that two-thirds of Riceland’s business is based on delivering, milling, storing, marketing and distributing rice. The core purpose of this farmer-owned cooperative is to generate enhanced revenue and returns for its membership.
Some commercially available products under the Riceland Rice label include milled white, brown and parboiled rice, and Rice 'N Easy Flavored Rice. The co-op also sells products to retailers, food service, and food manufacturing companies globally. Riceland also produces rice bran oil and rice flour and offers rice bran and hulls to pet food makers and livestock farmers as feed ingredients and bedding.
Riceland is also a major soybean processor in the Mississippi Delta region of the United States where milling, pressing, packaging and distribution occurs.

Shake's Frozen Custard

Shake's Frozen Custard is a frozen custard retailer founded by Don and Debbie Osborne in Joplin, Missouri in 1991. It was originally opened as Shakey's Frozen Custard but was changed to Shake's in 2001 in order to secure trademarks. Don and Debbie experimented with a variety of recipes and menu items until they were both satisfied, and their recipe proved to be extremely popular. Corey Osborne, Don's oldest son, opened the second location in Fayetteville, Arkansas in 1997. The new store was as successful as the original.
In 1999, the company began offering franchises and incorporated in Arkansas as Shake's Frozen Custard, Inc. Currently the franchise chain has nearly fifty stores in operation across nine states with many future locations planned.

Tyson Foods

Tyson Foods, Inc. is an American multinational corporation based in Springdale, Arkansas, that operates in the food industry. The company is the world's second largest processor and marketer of chicken, beef, and pork only behind Brazilian JBS S.A., and annually exports the largest percentage of beef out of the United States. With 2011 sales of US$32 billion, Tyson Foods is the second-largest food production company in the Fortune 500, the largest meat producer in the world, and according to Forbes one of the 100 largest companies in the United States.

USA Drug

USA Drug is a convenience store and pharmacy chain in the United States that operates more than 160 stores in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee. It was founded in Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1986. Its headquarters are still located in Pine Bluff with additional offices in Little Rock, Arkansas, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Memphis, Tennessee. Its parent company, Walgreens, operates Super D Drug Stores and Ikes Deep Discount Drug, both acquired in October 1997, and May's Drug, Med-X Drug, Drug Warehouse, and Drug Mart, all acquired in July 2004, as "Part of the USA Drug Family". Wal-Mart and CVS/Pharmacy are two of its primary competitors. The company's slogan is "America's Low Price Drug Store".
Steve LaFrance stepped down as CEO on October 20, 2006 and named Joe Courtright CEO of the company. Courtright was named president of the company in September and was vice president of pharmacy for Region 2 previous to that. LaFrance maintained a presence with the company as chairman.
On July 5, 2012, Walgreens announced the Acquisition of USA Drug. In September 2012, Walgreens announced that they will be closing 76 USA Drug affiliated stores by November.

Walmart

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., d.b.a. Walmart, is an American multinational retail corporation that operates a chain of discount department stores and warehouse stores. Headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, United States, the company was founded by Sam Walton in 1962 and incorporated on October 31, 1969. It has over 11,000 stores in 27 countries, under a total 71 banners. The company operates under the Walmart name in the United States and Puerto Rico. It operates as Walmart de México y Centroamérica in Mexico, as Asda in the United Kingdom, as Seiyu in Japan, and as Best Price in India. It has wholly owned operations in Argentina, Brazil, and Canada. It also owns and operates the Sam's Club retail warehouses.
Walmart is the world's largest company by revenue, according to the Fortune Global 500 list in 2014, as well as the biggest private employer in the world with 2.2 million employees. Walmart is a family-owned business, as the company is controlled by the Walton family, who own over 50 percent of Walmart through their holding company, Walton Enterprises. It is also one of the world's most valuable companies by market value, and is also the largest grocery retailer in the U.S.

Windstream Communications

Windstream Communications is a provider of voice and data network communications, and managed services, to businesses in the United States. The company also offers residential broadband, phone and digital TV services to consumers within its coverage area. It is the ninth largest residential telephone provider in the country with service covering more than 8.1 million people in 21 states. Headquartered in Little Rock, Arkansas, Windstream has more than $6 billion in annual revenues and is listed on the S&P 500 index.
The company was formed in 2006, when Alltel's local telephone service merged with Valor Communications Group out of part of GTE's local telephone business in the Southwestern United States.
Windstream is a partner with Dish Network, offering satellite service to its customers.

Yarnell Ice Cream Co.

Yarnell Ice Cream Company was the privately owned and operated manufacturer of Yarnell's brand ice cream, frozen yogurt and sherbet products. Founded in 1932, the company's corporate headquarters were located along the east side of Spring Park in downtown Searcy, Arkansas, with 11 branch operations throughout three states. The company was also the only independent ice cream company in Arkansas, where it commanded a large portion of the market share, competing against national and regional brands such as Texas-based Blue Bell Creameries.
Klinke Brothers Ice Cream Company in Memphis, Tennessee originally made the "Angel Food" brand products. In 2006, it had discontinued manufacturing the product, and licensed the brand to Yarnell's. The Memphis Business Journal stated that "The Angel Food brand has been a longtime best seller in Tennessee, Mississippi and southwest Kentucky." Klinke Brothers began focusing more on its Baskin Robbins franchising operations.
Yarnell Ice Cream Co. ceased operations on June 30, 2011. Later that year, Chicago-based snack manufacturer Schulze & Burch Biscuit Co. bought everything from recipes to its real estate for roughly $1.3 million.
