Although most dolls are wholesome, collectible items that spark nostalgic memories of a simpler time, there are a number of dolls with a shady past - such as the Cabbage Patch Kids doll that tore out children's hair and the new "smart" dolls that have the sinister potential to spy on children.

All in all, there are some rather shocking - as well as humorous - controversies surrounding dolls throughout the decades. This list unpacks some of the best-known scandals of the past 50 years.

CloudPets Were Pulled Due To Concerns That They Could Be Used To Spy On Kids

CloudPets were pulled from toy shelves and online stores in 2018 after a major security hack affected 800,000 people. The toys came with an app that allowed children to record messages that were then sent to their parents.

All of this information was stored online by the toy company and was subsequently hacked. Hackers held personal information for ransom, and fear of the dolls spying on children resulted in the toys being discontinued.

The Cabbage Patch Kids Snacktime Kid’s Mechanical Jaw Didn’t Have An Off Switch, Which Led To Hair Getting Caught And Eaten

The Cabbage Patch Kids Snacktime Kid doll terrorized children in the late '90s as it attempted to eat their fingers and hair. The doll had a mechanical jaw that allowed it to eat fake food, but since the mouth had no off switch, children could get their hair and fingers bitten.

There were multiple reports of little girls having their hair ripped out by the roots, and one girl's parents even had to call 911. It reportedly took emergency responders half an hour to free the child from the doll.

The Caylee Sunshine Doll Was Supposed To Resemble Casey Anthony’s Murdered Daughter

Showbiz Promotions had to pull the production of its Caylee Sunshine Doll after public backlash in 2009. The doll was meant to be a “tribute” to Caylee Anthony, the deceased daughter of Casey Anthony, who was charged with first-degree murder and ultimately found not guilty. Although the doll wore a shirt that said “Caylee," it does not resemble the deceased 2-year-old because Showbiz Promotions thought that would be “morbid.” The doll sang “You Are My Sunshine," a song that the real Caylee sang in home videos shown in the news.

The toy company's president said it only wished to raise awareness and funds related to Caylee's murder but ultimately decided to take a more "traditional" route moving forward.

After Michael Vick went to jail for dogfighting, Showbiz Promotions made dog chew toys that looked like the NFL quarterback.

The company would later be sued for misleading customers. Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum said:

Any company that intentionally misleads innocent consumers to believe they are contributing to worthy charitable causes is absolutely reprehensible. It is disgusting that a company would exploit a tragic situation for personal gain.

Despite Showbiz's claim to donate a portion of the Caylee Sunshine Doll profits to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the lawsuit claimed only $10 had been given.

A ‘Trolls’ Doll Had A Button Under Her Skirt That Made Her Gasp When Pressed

The DreamWorks Trolls World Tour Giggle and Sing Poppy doll had to be pulled by Hasbro in 2020 after parents criticized the doll's design. A button on the doll's stomach made it sing and talk, but a second button on the doll's bottom underneath its skirt made it "gasp and giggle."

An online petition to remove the doll from production gained over 150,000 signatures.

Hasbro said the button wasn't meant to be controversial, but they could see how some would see its placement as "inappropriate."

LOL Surprise! Dolls Appear In Lingerie If Placed In Cold Water

Parents took to Reddit and Facebook to warn others about LOL Surprise! dolls in 2020. As it turns out, the dolls' clothes would dissolve to reveal lingerie when submerged in cold water. Parents said the toys were sexualized and completely inappropriate for children.

The toy line had previously come under fire for making the dolls anatomically correct.
