Some might see the country music genre as one filled with songs of drinking, fighting, and gambling – but not drugs. That’s not necessarily true, as this list of country songs about drugs proves. Plenty of country singers have told tales about smoking, snorting, and shooting a number of different kinds of (mostly) illegal substances.
Willie Nelson should come immediately to mind. He’s country music royalty, and he’s also one of the most staunch supporters of legalizing weed ever. He is a legalization activist. He owns a marijuana company, Willie’s Reserve, in Colorado. And he’s written plenty of country drug songs about pot over decades. Gems include “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die,” and “It’s All Going to Pot” with Merle Haggard. You’ll also find other country musicians singing about the Country Outlaw and his love of marijuana, including Toby Keith (“Weed With Willie”) and Gary Allan (“What Would Willie Do”). Country songs about cocaine, meth, acid, and other drugs besides weed can also be found on this list - including anti-drug country songs, or songs that describe the grey area around drug use.
Several of these country songs about addiction and drugs are considered controversial, with many radio station programmers expressing reservations about playing them. This includes Kacey Musgraves’ 2013 single “Follow Your Arrow,” which went on to win CMA Song of the Year honors.
