Great Country Songs About Singing

Call it self-referential, but there are many toe-tapping country songs about singing. They celebrate everything that is great about country music, including the footloose-and-fancy-free attitude so many country fans have. These are the songs that demand that you crank up the volume and belt them out as loudly as you can.

There are plenty of great country songs about singers on this list. These folks are singing about their own songs, other people’s songs, their mama’s songs, their daddy’s songs – you name it. Brad Paisley explains what country music is, and Johnny Cash tells us about his childhood memories of singing gospel tunes with his parents and his little brother. Some of these country singalong songs don’t actually have “sing” in the title, but they touch on the concept in some way. Waylon Jennings’ country classic “Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way” is one example. Jennings grew up idolizing Hank Williams. He dreamed of getting up on stage and singing his songs, just the way Hank did. But once he achieved fame, he found it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Thus, the line, “Singing my songs, and one of his now and then…But I don't think Hank done 'em this way.”

Country singing songs can be carefree, but they’re also poignant and moving. Even country artists have to sing the blues sometimes. Dwight Yoakam’s 1988 song “I Sang Dixie” tells the story of a man who, upon finding a dying, homeless man on the streets of Los Angeles, holds him and sings to him as he passes away and others walk by, ignoring them.
