The Chernobyl disaster is unlike any other, not simply because of the horror of the events that unfolded, but because of its lasting effects. The explosion in Reactor 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant on April 26, 1986 set off centuries of repercussions for its people, animals, and the very land itself. The Soviets had no choice but to completely evacuate a large zone surrounding the accident site, now known as the exclusion zone.

Since then, what was once Pripyat, Ukraine, is now a ghost town. Mutated mosses and winding trees have taken over the abandoned buildings. Certain building materials have rotted and decayed, forever tainted by radiation. Although some parts of the abandoned are safe for tourists, these photographs of Chernobyl now remind us of the life that once inhabited this unsuspecting city.
