Creepy abandoned playgrounds are both cool and disturbing. There's just something about them that brings out the best and worst in our imaginations. When you were a kid, it meant that swings could become rockets and slides were ships. But now that you're an adult, your imagination might take you to a slightly darker place, turning ominous creaking and long shadows into all sorts of monsters.
It doesn't help that abandoned playgrounds are also frequently the setting for grisly murders and supernatural terrors in movies and TV (see basically every episode of Law & Order). Just about everyone has seen something creepy happen at a playground on-screen. Perhaps that's where our morbid fascination comes from. It would also explain why there are so many pictures of abandoned playgrounds out there.
In fact, all over the internet there are creepy pictures of playgrounds. Some show playgrounds that were abandoned quickly due to war and disaster, others offer an example of the brutality of time itself. Thanks to video games, smart tech, and copious amounts of homework, it seems like kids are spending less and less time playing on playgrounds. That might mean that in the future, there will be even more abandoned playgrounds to feed our fascination.
