Art history is rich with depictions of purgatory. Some are more benign than others, but the majority of such works paint a decidedly unpleasant picture of this stagnant form of afterlife. Classical figures such as Peter Paul Rubens, Gustave Doré, and William Blake all create purgatory artwork based on scripture and literature, especially Dante's Divine Comedy, while more modern artists like Tina Mion and Chalermchai Kositpipat offer unique takes on the subject. While no Earthly beings are sure about what Heaven is really like, it's hard not to look in terror upon representations of purgatory in art.
