Everyone has dreams occasionally of living in a fantasy world. And few outlets provide quite as much fantasy as anime. Anime usually provides the most colorful, intriguing, and straight up bizarre of fantasy options. But anyone who has watched enough anime will also tell you, that for every enticing and imaginative escape that anime provides, there are 20 absolutely freaky and horrifying possibilities presented as well.
The worlds built in anime are intricate and intriguing but there are plenty of dangerous anime locations no one would ever want to see replicated in the real world. Between mass casualties, hideous monsters, dystopian war zones, and daily attacks there are plenty of nightmare-scapes thought up by anime creators. While the animated nature of anime provides desensitization when watching these disturbing scenarios play out, lets take a minute to consider what life in these crazy anime settings would actually be like.
With so much anime skewing toward younger audiences, it's easy to gloss over the more mature series like Elfen Lied or Attack on Titan, both of which rarely allow their poor characters a peaceful day. It's hard to decide which is worse, being devoured by naked giants or forced to play in suicidal games. That's just the top of the barrel. Let's dive deeper into 15 anime locations that will certainly never be turned into theme parks.

The great Isaac Newton once said, "We build too many walls and not enough bridges." Clearly Newton never had to deal with deadly naked giants that craved human flesh. In the apocalyptic anime, Attack on Titan, the last remnants of humanity live in fear of Titans, gigantic humanoid creatures that suddenly appeared 100 years ago and nearly wiped everyone out. These giants are naked, wear horrifying grins on their faces, and love nothing more than snacking on humans mindlessly. To survive, humans created three enormous curtain walls to shield themselves from the Titans. A solid plan... until a 60-meter-tall, fire-breathing Colossus Titan comes in to crash the party.

There's no fate worse than death... supposedly. For the inmates of Deadman Wonderland, getting death row would be a dream come true. Sharing the same name of the series, Deadman Wonderland is a twisted prison that doubles as a savage amusement park for tourists. Inmates must wear collars that continuously injects them with poison. A poison that's neutralized by eating a special kind of candy every three days. However, to buy the miracle sweets from the prison staff, prisoners must earn currency by performing in life or death challenges. Just trying to stay alive during these cruel performances would make anyone yearn for lethal injection.1,714153Is this terrifying?

The Neo-Green Life, or NGL, is an autonomous region in Hunter X Hunter that favors the old way of life. It's not exactly a life choice, as citizens aren't allowed modern medicine and technological goods, suffering either imprisonment or death if they violate the rules. As if living in NGL wasn't harsh enough, the region later becomes the feasting ground for the mutated Chimera Ants and its queen. Spoiler alert: Lots of people are eaten.1,319167Is this terrifying?

The cat-eared girls in Elfen Lied may look cute, but as members of the Diclonius species, they have an excessive habit of killing people by causing their heads to burst with just a thought. Their cat ears are actually horns and not only is it dangerous to live around Diclonius, due to their murderous behaviors, it's dangerous to be one of these human hybrids who are hunted by researchers. The Diclonius Research Institute - known to the Japanese public as the National Research Institute on Human Evolution - not only wants to study the Diclonius, they want to engineer them so they can become the new dominant species. It's a cruel facility that wants to control the psychokinetic evolution of humanity by any means necessary. All around not a happy place.1,172168Is this terrifying?
