8/20/13: Elmore Leonard, the writer of such popular novels as Get Shorty, Out of Sight, and Fifty-Two Pickup, succumbed to a stroke. Known for his sharp prose and witty dialogue, Leonard's work has long been popular in Hollywood, leading to several movie and television adaptations (including the Paul Newman-starring Hombre and the TV series Justified).
The prolific writer was at work on his 46th novel. He was 87.
7/31/13: John Graves, the author of Goodbye to a River, perished. He was 92.
7/20/13: Helen Thomas, a member of the White House press corps and frequent guest on The Colbert Report, passed at 92.
7/17/13: Vincenzo Cerami, the Oscar-nominated writer of Life Is Beautiful, perished following an illness. He was 72.
