Whether you’re on a cross-country road trip or just getting out of town for the weekend, sleeping in a hotel is a crapshoot. Even the best hotel rooms can disguise disgusting secrets, so you should be on the lookout for strange fluids and special surprises hidden in the sheets. These creepy hotel stories run the gamut of nightmare scenarios - from a blood-soaked mattress to bullet holes to a terrifying amount of spiders.

The following hotel horror stories will make you think twice about staying in a random roadside room, regardless of how good its Yelp reviews are. If you’re on a road trip and you experience anything like the stories below, you’re better off sleeping in your car.

  • The Camera In The Clock

    From Redditor /u/StavTheImpaler:

When I was staying at the Cosmopolitan in Vegas last year we discovered that the alarm clock in the room had a hidden camera in it. Me being the furious bastard that I am ran to the front desk with clock in hand and demanded an explanation.

Apparently the clock was not the hotel's standard, and someone took the hotel's clock and replaced it with their own for their own voyeuristic escapades. I was still pretty pissed, but the week free stay voucher I got made me feel better.

I'm convinced it was someone who worked at the hotel, but I don't care enough to make a huge stink about it.

  • The Tooth Is In The Pudding

    From Redditor /u/MegatronSucks:

A tooth. A huge tooth just sitting on the windowsill. Had the longest root I had ever seen.

  • One Visitor's Room Doubled As A Mushroom Farm

    From Redditor /u/PoopasaurusRex:

In a so-so (but not super sh*tty) hotel in Southern California, I noticed a wet, dark area in the corner of the hotel room near where the back of the bed meets the wall. There was a swampy, musty smell coming from the corner, like some kind of fungus was growing. In the corner was a small cluster of live mushrooms growing.

Not like little newborn mushrooms, but big, white mushrooms and their mushroom babies too. A big happy mushroom family. F*ckin' mushrooms growing in the hotel room.

  • Always Check For Blood Under The Mattress

    From Redditor /u/NotAlana:

    BLOOD... so much blood.

I worked at the hotel. The pillow was soaked solid. The mattress was covered. Because I worked in the scuzziest hotel in town, we shampooed the carpet and flipped the mattress and rented it out that night.

That means someone was sleeping on a mattress still damp with tons of blood. Yuck.
