Imagine you're a scary cinematic supervillain intent upon destroying your adversaries and - likely - the entire world along with them. While it's easy to take out dumb horror movie characters, how would you defeat the smart ones? The ones who keep evading you?
This predicament doesn't just exist in horror movies. Across genres, supervillains who prove themselves true rivals are often defeated by making stupid mistakes that cost them their lives. Usually too egotistical and obsessive for their own good, these foes are conquered at the moment their self-assurance convinces them they've won the scuffle. Little do they know they're about to lose the entire conflict.
While the villains on this list are some of the most powerful and frightening fictional characters to exist, their reigns of terror are, ultimately, extinguished with just a dash of cleverness from the cast of heroes working to outsmart them.
Dennis Nedry Thinks He's Smarter Than Mother Nature In 'Jurassic Park'Photo: Universal Pictures
Film/Franchise: Dennis Nedry is a data scientist who appears in the first Jurassic Park film.
Powers/Abilities: Nedry is a knowledgeable computer programmer. He thinks he's worked out a master con when he agrees to unlawfully export dinosaur eggs off the island for a competing company.
Dumbest Defeat: Nedry is the catalyst behind the series of events that allows the dinosaurs on Isla Nublar to escape. He disables the island's security system as a massive storm descends upon it in order to take eggs undetected.
Switching off the island's security would have been a slick move for any island that didn't contain hungry, carnivorous dinosaurs. Once he flees with the eggs, the storm causes Nedry to steer his Jeep right into a dilophosaurus enclosure.72451Are you smarter?

Film/Franchise: This evil witch was first made famous in 1939's The Wizard of Oz, the classic adaption of L. Frank Baum's children's book.
Dumbest Defeat: After sending her flying monkeys to capture Dorothy, the witch keeps the girl in her castle, desirous of her magical ruby red slippers. After the witch antagonizes Dorothy's friend the Scarecrow by setting him on fire, Dorothy throws a bucket of water toward the flames hoping to save her friend. She accidentally douses the witch, causing her enemy to melt.
For such a powerful foe, the wicked witch sure has a major weakness. Unless she was completely unaware of her own fatal flaw, she shouldn't have allowed water to be kept anywhere near her person.44430Are you smarter?

Film/Franchise: Blackheart is the main antagonist of Ghost Rider. This demon spawn was birthed by Mephistopheles, lord of the Underworld.
Powers/Abilities: An immortal, evil spirit, Blackheart is incredibly powerful, possessing numerous supernatural sensory abilities. His most terrifying feature is his touch. Anyone who brushes against him burns from the inside due to his sulfurous caress.
Dumbest Defeat: Blackheart becomes Legion after devouring thousands of souls. This could potentially make him super powerful, but it also leaves him super vulnerable to Ghost Rider's signature move: the Penance Stare. Making yourself more vulnerable to your enemy is probably not the best way to go about world domination.54561Are you smarter?

Film/Franchise: Lord Voldemort, AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle, is the main antagonist in the Harry Potter franchise.
Powers/Abilities: This heir to Salazar Slytherin is a powerful wizard who becomes the leader of the Death Eaters. He's an expert of the dark arts, as well as the most feared and powerful dark wizard in a generation.
Dumbest Defeat: The reason Lord Voldemort falls to pieces after his duel with Harry is because he isn't the master of the Elder Wand - Harry is. When he casts his Avada Kedavra spell, the wand refuses to harm Harry and rebounds on Voldemort instead. This shouldn't come as a surprise to the dark wizard, since Harry just told him the wand's allegiance is to someone else.
Given that Neville Longbottom has just sliced and diced Nagini, Voldemort's final horcrux, the wizard's best move would be to turn tail and run. However, his arrogance leads him to reject reality and blow himself away.59285Are you smarter?
