Hip hop began as a subculture in the Bronx in the late 1970s. The hip hop scene in the South Bronx began with neighborhood block parties, eventually spreading to an increasingly wider audience. However, the history of hip hop meant that self-promotion was key; that's where hand-drawn promotional posters come in.

The designs of these early hip hop promotions helped contribute to the overall aesthetic of the hip hop movement. They give cool and unique insight into the beginnings of the now world-wide culture, a genre of music that contains the greatest rappers of all time. Take a look at these posters, and vote up your favorite.
