The Emmy Awards Outstanding Drama Series 2012 nominees recognized the top dramatic television shows that aired in the year prior to the 2012 Primetime Emmy Awards held on Sunday, September 23, 2012. "Homeland" was named the winner as the awards were handed out at the event hosted by Jimmy Kimmel at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California.
The 2012 nominees for the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy Award included returning favorites, such as the winner in this category the last four years, "Mad Men," which follows the advertising world in the 1960s, as well as "Boardwalk Empire," an HBO series set in Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the Prohibition era.
But for 2012 "Mad Men" faced some stiff competition with other stellar dramas in contention for the statue. Fellow AMC drama "Breaking Bad," which follows a chemistry teacher turned meth lord, was expected to give the others some good competition as was "Game of Thrones," the medieval fantasy series based on George R. R. Martin novels, "Downton Abby," a PBS series set in the post-Edwardian era in England, and "Homeland," a psychological thriller that focuses on the fight against a former US Marine turned Al Qaeda agent. The Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series was just one of several that handed out as the best actors, actresses, writers and others in the entertainment world met to honor the best in television. Among the other top categories of the night included the Emmy Awards Outstanding Comedy Series 2012 and the Emmy Awards Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2012.
