Nerd hero and luckiest man on Earth Robert Downey Jr., breathed life into the Marvel Cinematic Universe way back in 2008 with his inaugural performance as Tony Stark. In Iron Man, Tony created the Mark I suit under significant duress with few resources, which is why it looked like a walking trash compactor. Since then, though, all of Iron Man's suits have grown increasingly baller (including the one he gifted to Rhodey, who qualifies as one of the luckiest MCU characters).
So, just how many suits does Iron Man have in the MCU? Forty-six. Forty-six freaking suits! Now, only 30 of those awesome, mind-blowing suits of armor in Iron Man's arsenal have been fed to our glistening eyeballs over the course of RDJ's six appearances in the MCU, as most of the Iron Legion was destroyed in Iron Man 3 without real screen time. To see all of the Iron Man armors, you would normally throw on your pjs, sink into your couch, and watch roughly 15 hours of film footage. Since no one has that kind of time, the suits are all assembled here for your viewing and voting pleasure.
Official Armor Name: Iron Man Armor Mk VII Special Properties: Like the Mk V, this armor does not require a gantry system to apply, instead using lasers that identify and couple with totes adorbs wristlets worn by Tony, initiating a similar auto-equip function as seen in The Avengers when Loki throws Tony out of his own building. It has additional thrusters on the back, calves, feet, chest, knees, and toes (knees and toes). It's equipped with 90+ high-explosive micromissiles, two tri-barreled laser modules, an anti-armor missile, and upgraded plasma chargers, which increase repulsor rates. Appears In: The Avengers
Official Armor Name: Hulkbuster (or Veronica) Special Properties: If you thought Hammerhead was going through a midlife crisis, prepare yourself for this 'roid monster. Mk XLIV was designed to take on the Hulk (as is rather self-explanatory). Hulkbuster has improved strength, a grappling hook, a jackhammer fist (which provides the hilarious "Go to sleep" scene), and a chemical spray. It is stored on a satellite and deployed when Tony activates the "Veronica" protocol, an homage to Archie Comics. (Bruce Banner dates a woman named Betty in the comics, the same name of a character in Archie Comics, which also touts a character named Veronica. It's a rather loose thread.) Appears In:Avengers: Age of Ultron
Official Armor Name: Iron Man Armor Mk III Special Properties: This is Tony's first weaponized suit outfitted with various sub-armor weapons, and affording the RT (Repulsor Technology) chest piece the unibeam capability—a powerful attack that transforms light into physical energy—with the same capability given to the flight stimulators on the palms of the suit. The Mk III sports the iconic red and gold color scheme and is upgraded to a titanium/gold alloy to fix the icing problem in the Mk II. Remember your elation when he first donned it? Oh, that was magical. The Mk III technically appeared in Iron Man 3 as it was destroyed in the Mandarin's attack, but we'll only count movies in which the suits were active. Appears In: Iron Man
Official Armor Name: Iron Man Armor Mk XLVI Special Properties: Mk XLVI sports yet another new design, once again making red the primary color, but debuting a new trapezoidal RT chest piece containing the Arc Reactor. It has a few new weapons: it can shoot electricity and a paralytic out of the hands. One of its coolest features is its collapsible helmet, which replaces the ho-hum garage-door face plate. In one of the most bad ass scenes of the MCU, Captain America destroys this suit by crushing the Arc Reactor in the climactic fight of Civil War. So, will Tony make a new suit for his next appearance? Yeah. Obviously. Stupid question, guys. Appears In:Captain America: Civil War
Official Armor Name: Iron Man Armor Mk VI Special Properties: The Mark VI is an upgrade of the Mark IV, and the first to sport a triangular chest piece containing the new vibranium-powered Arc Reactor. This suit offers an all-around upgrade to the flight and weapons systems, including mini wrist-rockets and a palladium-powered laser system on the back of each hand that cuts through anything like a hot knife through butter. The Mark VI is the first to withstand submersion in water, but was, once again, ultimately destroyed in the Mandarin's attack. Appears In: Iron Man 2 and The Avengers
Official Armor Name: Autonomous Prehensile Propulsion Suit Special Properties: Mk XLII is Tony's primary suit in Iron Man 3, so you'd think he could give it a name. Its color scheme is essentially a reverse of the original designs, with gold being the primary color and red the secondary. This suit has all the bells and whistles: a built-in self-repair system, all-around state-of-the-art weaponry upgrades, and a plasma-penetration unibeam that allows it to penetrate solid objects. It also utilizes similar technology to Bones, with the added feature of corresponding microchips implanted in Tony that allow him to control the suit through his nervous system and call it to him where it can equip piece-by-piece. This is how he escaped the Mandarin's compound in Iron Man 3. Appears In: Iron Man 3
