Sir Elton John is one of the most famous singer/songwriters to have ever lived. A film entitled Rocketman starring Taron Egerton retells the highlights of John’s career in a way that lives up to the eccentric entertainer’s penchant for dramatic flair.

The film is not a traditional biopic, even though it is based on actual events, and audiences should expect the movie to be more of a cinematic musical with themes that are not suitable for young children.

The highs and lows of superstardom hit John especially hard throughout his multi-decade long career. Given how John has recorded numerous successful albums, there should be no shortage of songs for the film to tell the turbulent, larger-than-life tale of lust, parties, and rock-and-roll.

Some of the original material was re-recorded for the film, much to John's excitement. Fans interested in the production of Rocketman are sure to enjoy a behind the scenes peek at the first-of-its-kind musical.

Fans should know Rocketman is not a biopic. It won’t follow a literal interpretation of events and instead is positioned as a musical that recounts John’s life using performances that incorporate elements of fantasy.

The story is based on actual events but is told using the artist’s imagination in addition to his life story. Instead of focusing on how the music was made, Rocketman looks to use the music to tell the darker story that unfolded behind the glitter and glitz.

Some of the juicer details indicate John’s love life, depression, substance issues, and eventual rehabilitation are the main plot points. This means copious partying and a hot-and-heavy scene between Taron Egerton and Richard Madden (who plays John Reid, John’s manager) are almost sure to occur.

Taron Egerton is a Welsh actor known for both British and American film and TV, but apparently, he also has an amazing singing voice. He plays John in the musical film Rocketman and used his own singing chops for the part. Instead of lip-syncing to John’s tunes, he re-recorded the vocals using his own voice.

John Was Blown Away By Taron Egerton’s Voice

Impressing the likes of John is no small feat. The acclaimed vocalist was so dazzled by Taron Egerton’s vocal ability that he told his husband David Furnish, “it can’t get any better for me.”

“When I played the songs for Elton, he was blown away, really blown away,” Furnish explained to the Hollywood Reporter during an interview. Apparently, Egerton is a serious fan. He was reportedly wearing one of John’s concert T-shirts during the recording session.

John’s First Pick Was Justin Timberlake

John had his own opinion on who should play him. As early as 2012, he hand-picked Justin Timberlake to portray him as a young man. This is an interesting choice for a few reasons. JT can obviously sing and play piano, but he isn’t British.

The accent seems like one of the more important factors needed for an actor to play John, a native of Middlesex, England. Whatever the reason, Timberlake was never cast for the film, but he did play John in the 2010 music video for the 2001 song “This Train Don't Stop There Anymore.”
