As told through the eyes of Ted Bundy's longtime love, Elizabeth Kloepfer, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile is a film that chronicles the antics of the infamous offender, as well as his trial and ultimate conviction. Directed by documentarian Joe Berlinger, the film poses the question: what would it be like to be manipulated by one of the world's most notorious evildoers? There's a lot of early buzz about this movie, in particular, Zac Efron's stunning transformation into the charming but vicious Ted Bundy.

The film has been criticized for romanticizing Bundy. Berlinger responded to the backlash, assuring audiences that "our film in no way glorifies Bundy or his atrocious acts, nor was the trailer intended to give that impression." Around the same time that it premiered, Netflix released Conversations With A Killer, a documentary presenting Bundy's infamous confession tapes, which only added to the resurgence of his popularity. The streaming service quickly pulled back, however, asking their viewers to stop lusting after Bundy and focus, rather, on his atrocities highlighted both by the documentary and the movie.

After the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, Netflix purchased the rights to Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile for $9 million. On April 2, the second trailer debuted and with it came the announcement that Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile will premiere on Netflix and in select theaters May 3.

  • The Trailer Is Chill-Inducing

On January 25, 2019, One Media released the offical trailer for the film. The teaser plays with the viewer, showing Bundy as a loving, caring partner with an unmatched amount of charisma, and then juxtaposing it with the violence of his crimes.

  • Zac Efron Plays Ted Bundy

High School Musical heartthrob Zac Efron plays against type in this film. Efron sinks his teeth into the role of Ted Bundy, switching from a bonafide Disney celebrity to a projection of the dark charisma of Bundy.

Efron also shared a glimpse of what he looks like in this film characterization, and his costume looks just as casually unassuming as the real Bundy.

  • Lily Collins Plays Bundy's Longtime Girlfriend

Lily Collins plays the role of Elizabeth Kloepfer, Ted Bundy's longtime girlfriend. Kloepfer played an active role in many of Bundy's activities, including providing cover for the allegations surrounding him. Kloepfer also aided in paying his legal expenses. However, she also ultimately cooperated in the multiple investigations against Bundy, which helped to stop his multi-state spree.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile is told (at least partially) from Kloepfer's perspective, which allows viewers to experience firsthand Bundy's antics.

  • John Malkovich Plays The Judge Who Sentenced Bundy

Though he confessed to 30 slayings, Bundy was only ever tried for three of them. In 1979, a jury convicted Bundy on all charges, and the judge, Edward Cowart, sentenced him to capital punishment, which was carried out a decade later.

In January 2018, John Malkovich joined the cast of Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile to play the role of Cowart.
