Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland are the only set of sisters to both win Oscars, but that doesn't mean that they have an award-winning relationship. Their troubles started in childhood, as Olivia was reportedly her mother's favorite child. When the older Olivia became an actress, she was resentful when Joan later wanted to do the same thing, and the sibling rivalry grew. The feud came to a head at the 1942 Oscars, where both sisters were nominated for Best Actress. While Olivia was expected to win, the younger Joan stole the prize, and reportedly snubbed her sister's congratulatory remarks.
Olivia got her big moment, though, when she won her own Oscar in 1947 and publicly ignored Joan. While this was rumored to be payback for Joan's snub, it may have actually been a response to a different diss. After Olivia de Havilland married novelist Marcus Goodrich, Joan Fontaine publicly remarked, "All I know about him is that he’s had four wives and written one book. Too bad it’s not the other way around."
The sisters continued to have a competitive, yet communicative relationship until their mother passed away in 1975 – and Joan was not invited to the funeral.
They were said to have not spoken to each other for decades, but both claimed that they didn't hold hostility toward the other. But when asked about their relationship by People in 1978, Joan replied, "You can divorce your sister as well as your husbands. I don’t see her at all and I don’t intend to."
