Frankétienne is a writer, poet, playwright, painter, musician, activist and intellectual. is recognized as one of Haiti's leading writers and playwrights of both French and Haitian Creole. He has been recently called The father of Haitian letters by The New York Times. As a painter, he is known for his colorful abstract works, often emphasizing the colors blue and red. Edouard Duval-Carrié is a Haitian-born American painter and sculptor. Born in Port-au-Prince, his family emigrated to Puerto Rico while he was a child during the François Duvalier regime. Duval-Carrié studied at the Université de Montréal and McGill University in Canada before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from Loyola College, Montréal in 1978. He later attended the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France, from 1988 to 1989. He resided in France for many years and currently lives in Miami, Florida. Petion Savain was a prolific Haitian artist and writer. Savain was born in Port-au-Prince and studied at the Haitian School of Agronomy from which received a degree in law. He began painting in his early years and by his early thirties he was also the author of one book, La Case de Damballah. La Case de Damballah was published in 1939 and republished in 1970. The novel also appeared in the 1943 publication Les Oeuvres Nouvelles, Vol. 3. Savain eventually became a newspaper columnist, as well as lawyer, teacher, and author. Préfète Duffaut was a Haitian painter. Born near Jacmel, where he lived and worked. The painter Pauleus Vital was Duffaut's half-brother, the painter Jean Charles Duffaut is his son. Duffaut's mother died when he was two years old. Duffaut was one of the painters, alongside important Haitian artists such as Gesner Abelard and Rigaud Benoit, at the Centre d'Art in the Haitian capital. In the early 1950s Duffaut was one of several artists invited to paint murals in the interior of the Cathedral of Sainte Trinité in Port-au-Prince; his works there were titled "The Temptation of Christ" and "The Processional Road".
