History

The California Gold Rush loosely refers to a period in the 1840s and 1850s when gold was discovered in California and tens of thousands of people flocked to the state seeking wealth. The period began in January of 1848 when James Marshall discovered gold underneath Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California, near Sacramento. (Coloma itself turned into a small town, Culloma, throughout the period, and is today a popular <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/american-ghost-towns/alby-thompson">"ghost town"</a> tourist attraction.) In 1849, President James Polk used the phrase "Gold Rush" to describe the movement West, which brought an estimated 200,000 to California in total. By 1850, the population of the California territory was such that a governor and legislature were chosen and a Constitution drawn up. Many of these are located in and around San Francisco, the US city that had the largest population boom during the Gold Rush, changing from a town of about 200 to a bustling city of 36,000 in 6 years. A. Wallace Tashima

Atsushi Wallace Tashima (born June 24, 1934) is a Senior United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and a former United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Central District of California. He is the third Asian American and first Japanese American to be appointed to a United States Court of Appeals.

Aaron Peskin

Aaron Dan Peskin (born June 17, 1964) is an American elected official in San Francisco, California. He serves as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors representing Supervisorial District 3, and is currently Dean of the Board. He was elected in 2015, having previously served two terms in 2001–2009. In January 2005, his colleagues elected him president of the board; he served as such until the end of his term limit in 2009. He was head of the San Francisco Democratic Party Central Committee from 2008 to 2012.
District 3 includes the neighborhoods of North Beach, Chinatown, Telegraph Hill, North Waterfront, Financial District, Nob Hill, Union Square, Maiden Lane, and part of Russian Hill.

Abel Maldonado

Abel O. Maldonado Jr. (born August 21, 1967) is an American politician who served as the 48th Lieutenant Governor of California from April 27, 2010 to January 10, 2011. He is a member of the Republican Party.
Elected to the Santa Maria City Council in 1994, Maldonado then served as Mayor of Santa Maria from 1996 to 1998, when he was elected to the California State Assembly. He served in that body from 1998 to 2004 and then in the California State Senate from 2004 to 2010, running unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for California State Controller in 2006. Maldonado was the first Republican in the State Senate to vote for the budget during the budget deadlock in 2007. He represented a swing district in the Senate and is considered a moderate.On November 23, 2009, then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Maldonado as his nominee for lieutenant governor to fill the vacancy created by Democrat John Garamendi's election to the United States House of Representatives. Maldonado was sworn into office on April 27, 2010 and was defeated in the 2010 lieutenant gubernatorial election by Democrat Gavin Newsom.
Maldonado ran for California's 24th congressional district in the 2012 elections, but was defeated by incumbent Democrat Lois Capps. In May 2013, he announced that he was running for governor in the 2014 election, but dropped out in January 2014 after anaemic fundraising and campaign missteps.

Adam Kokesh

Adam Charles Kokesh (; born February 1, 1982) is an American libertarian political activist, radio host, author and a U.S. 2020 Libertarian presidential candidate running on the single-issue platform of an "orderly dissolution of the federal government."Kokesh is a former U.S. Marine Corps sergeant, serving in the Iraq War in 2004. Upon his return from Iraq, he became an anti-war activist and an advocate for the Iraq Veterans Against the War group. He emerged as a radio talk show host in 2011 when his TV, radio and web access show Adam vs. The Man was licensed by RT America, until it was cancelled months later due to an FEC complaint.
He first came to national attention after his photograph appeared in various newspapers, including the front page of the Los Angeles Times at a protest during Alberto Gonzales's testimony to Congress regarding the dismissal of U.S. attorneys.

Akiko Dōmoto

Akiko Dōmoto (堂本 暁子, Dōmoto Akiko, born July 31, 1932) was the governor of Chiba Prefecture in Japan from 2001 to 2009. A graduate of Tokyo Woman's Christian University, she was the first female governor of Chiba and the third in Japanese history. She was first elected in 2001. In September 2001 she canceled a controversial plan to reclaim the Sanbanze wetlands as landfill. Historian Jeff Kingston called this act "a major victory for activists."

Al McCandless

Alfred A. McCandless (July 23, 1927 – August 9, 2017) was a Republican politician from California.
McCandless was born in Brawley, Imperial County, California, on July 23, 1927. He attended Los Angeles City schools and received a B.A., University of California at Los Angeles in 1951, McCandless served in the United States Marine Corps from 1945–1946 and 1950–1952, and attained the rank of Captain. He later worked as an automobile and truck dealer from 1953–1975, and was a member of the Riverside County board of supervisors from 1972–1982 and the Riverside County housing authority from 1974–1982. McCandless was elected as a Republican to the Ninety-eighth and to the five succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1983 – January 3, 1995) and was not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Fourth Congress.
McCandless died at his home in La Quinta, California on August 9, 2017 at the age of 90.

Alan Cranston

Alan MacGregor Cranston (June 19, 1914 – December 31, 2000) was an American politician and journalist who served as a United States Senator from California, from 1969 to 1993, and as President of the World Federalist Association from 1949 to 1952.
Born in Palo Alto, California, Cranston worked as a journalist after graduating from Stanford University. After serving as California State Controller, Cranston won election to the Senate in 1968. He became the Senate Democratic Whip in 1977 and held that position until 1991. In 1984, Cranston sought the Democratic presidential nomination, advocating a nuclear freeze during the later stages of the Cold War. He dropped out after the first set of primaries.
In 1991, the Senate Ethics Committee reprimanded Cranston for his role in the savings and loan crisis as a member of the Keating Five. After being diagnosed with prostate cancer, he decided not to run for a fifth term. After his retirement from the Senate, he served as president of the Global Security Institute and advocated for the global abolition of nuclear weapons.

Alberto Torrico

Alberto Torrico was elected to the California State Assembly in 2004.  He served for 6 years, including two years as Majority Leader.
During his three terms in Sacramento, Alberto served as Chair of the Public Employee Retirement and Social Security Committee, charged with oversight of the pension funds, CALPERS and CALSTRS.  He also chaired the Governmental Organization Committee.
In the California Democratic primary of 2010, Alberto ran unsuccessfully for Attorney General.
After being termed out of office, Torrico was appointed to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board in January 2011. Prior to his legislative tenure, Alberto served as a council member for three years in the East Bay community of Newark.



Alex Padilla

Alejandro Padilla (born March 22, 1973) is an American politician, Democratic Party activist, engineer, and civil servant. He has served as the Secretary of State of California since winning the general election on November 5, 2014, defeating Republican Pete Peterson, with approximately 54% of the vote.
He served in the California State Senate, representing the 20th District after his election to the position in November 2006. Prior to serving in the Senate he served 7½ years on the Los Angeles City Council representing the 7th District. First elected in 1999, he was elected council president in July 2001 and remained president through December 31, 2005.

Alfred J. Elliott

Alfred James Elliott (June 1, 1895 – January 17, 1973) was a Democratic Representative from California.
He was born in Guinda, California and moved with his parents to Winters, California, in 1901, and to Tulare, California, in 1910, where he resided until his death in 1973. He worked as a farmer and livestock breeder and was the owner and publisher of the Tulare Daily News. From 1933-1937, he served as the chairman of the Tulare County Board of Supervisors. From 1935 to 1936, he was a member of the California Supervisor Association of the State welfare board and in 1936 he served on the California State Safety Council. He was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1937, by special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Henry E. Stubbs. He was re-elected to represent California's 10th congressional district five times and served from 1937 to 1949. He retired in 1965.
Elliot was among the most outspoken in expressing bigotry toward Japanese Americans. In 1943 he protested the release of some Japanese Americans from the relocation camps, repeating his earlier statement that "the only good Jap is a dead Jap," and declaring that "When the war is over, as far as I am concerned, we should ship every Jap in the United States back to Japan . . ."

Allan Mansoor

Allan Roy Mansoor (born June 16, 1964) is an American politician and former member of the California State Assembly. He is a Republican who represented the 74th district, encompassing a northwestern part of Orange County. Prior to being elected to the state assembly, he was the Mayor of Costa Mesa.  In 2014, he sought election to the Orange County Board of Supervisors, but lost the election to state Board of Equalization member Michelle Park Steel.Mansoor's father was an antiquities dealer and a member of the Coptic Orthodox Church from Egypt and his mother was originally from the Åland Islands.

Allan O. Hunter

Allan Oakley Hunter (June 15, 1916 – May 2, 1995) was an American lawyer and politician. Hunter, a Republican, served as the United States Representative for California's 9th congressional district from 1951 to 1953 and for California's 12th congressional district from 1953 to 1955. After his stint in politics, Hunter served as the president and chairman of the Federal National Mortgage Association (commonly known as Fannie Mae) from 1970 to 1981.



Allan Sproul

Allan Sproul (March 9, 1896 – April 9, 1978) was an American banker. Widely regarded as one of the world's foremost central bankers, he served as President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York from 1941 to 1956.

Ami Bera

Amerish Babulal "Ami" Bera is an American physician who has been the U.S. Representative for California's 7th congressional district since 2013. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Bera won re-election in 2014 despite a very competitive race. Bera is currently the only Indian American serving in the United States Congress and the only Unitarian Universalist in Congress.

Andrés Pico

Andrés Pico (November 18, 1810 – February 14, 1876) was a Californio who became a successful rancher, fought in the contested Battle of San Pascual during the Mexican–American War, and negotiated promises of post-war protections for Californios in the 1847 Treaty of Cahuenga.  After California became one of the United States, Pico was elected to the state Assembly and Senate. He was appointed as the commanding brigadier general of the state militia during the U.S. Civil War.

Angelo Joseph Rossi

Angelo Joseph Rossi (January 22, 1878 – April 5, 1948) was a U.S. political figure who served as the 31st mayor of San Francisco. He was the first mayor of 100% Italian descent of a major U.S. city  (top 10 most populous U.S. cities between 1776 and 1931).

Ann Veneman

Ann Margaret Veneman (born June 29, 1949) was the Executive Director of UNICEF from 2005 to 2010.  Her appointment was announced on January 18, 2005 by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.  Previously, Veneman was the United States Secretary of Agriculture, the first, and as of 2018 the only, woman to hold that position.  Veneman served as USDA Secretary from January 20, 2001 to January 20, 2005, leaving to become the fifth executive director of UNICEF. She served in this position from May 1, 2005. A lawyer, Veneman has practiced law in Washington, DC and California, including being a deputy public defender.  She has also served in other high level positions in U.S. federal and state government, including being appointed California's Secretary of Food and Agriculture, serving from 1995 to 1999.
Veneman serves as a co-leader of the Nutrition and Physical Activity Initiative at the Bipartisan Policy Center. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.



Anna Escobedo Cabral

Anna Escobedo Cabral (born October 12, 1959) serves as the Unit Chief for Strategic Communications in the External Relations Division of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).  Prior to joining the bank, Cabral served as the 42nd Treasurer of the United States from January 19, 2005 to January 20, 2009. She became the highest-ranking Latina in the George W. Bush Administration after the resignation of Rosario Marin.

Anthony Adams

Anthony Adams (born February 27, 1971 in Los Angeles, California) is a former California State Assemblyman who represented the 59th district from 2006 to 2010. He re-registered from Republican to No Party Preference (previously known as Decline To State) in 2012.
Receiving his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from California State University, San Bernardino and his Law Degree from Western State University College of Law in Fullerton, Adams passed the California Bar exam in July 2010.Adams was the director of legislative affairs for San Bernardino County prior to his election to the State Assembly. He served as a member of the Hesperia Public Safety Commission. He hosted a local weekly radio broadcast on KIXW (AM Talk 960). The California State Firefighters Association and the San Bernardino County Board of Education have both named Assemblyman Adams as Legislator of the Year.Adams was one of only six Republican legislators to approve the 2009 budget, which included tax increases despite having previously signed an anti-tax pledge. Adams chose not to run for re-election in 2010, and was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to a post on the state parole board in December 2010.Adams ran for Congress in California's 8th District in 2012, and came in 9th place in the primary with 3.3% of the vote He and his wife Deanna have resided in Hesperia, California since 1996.
Adams is currently working in Northern California (Ukiah) as a Deputy Public Defender for Mendocino County, as of September 2014.

Anthony Cannella

Anthony Joseph Cannella (born March 22, 1969) is an American politician who previously served in the California State Senate. A Republican, he represented the 12th Senate District, which encompasses all of both Merced and San Benito counties, as well as parts of Fresno, Madera, Monterey, and Stanislaus counties. Prior to his election to the State Senate, he served as the Mayor of Ceres.
He is the son of Sal Cannella, a former Democratic Assemblymember who also represented portions of the Central Valley.

Anthony Kennedy

Anthony McLeod Kennedy (born July 23, 1936) is an American lawyer and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1988 until his retirement in 2018. He was nominated to the court in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan, and sworn in on February 18, 1988. After the retirement of Sandra Day O'Connor in 2006, he was the swing vote on many of the Roberts Court's 5–4 decisions.
Born in Sacramento, California, Kennedy took over his father's legal practice in Sacramento after graduating from Harvard Law School. In 1975, President Gerald Ford appointed Kennedy to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. In November 1987, after two failed attempts at nominating a successor to Associate Justice Lewis F. Powell Jr., President Reagan nominated Kennedy to the Supreme Court. Kennedy won unanimous confirmation from the United States Senate in February 1988. Following the death of Antonin Scalia in February 2016, Kennedy became the Senior Associate Justice of the Court; he remained the Senior Associate Justice until his July 2018 retirement. Kennedy retired during the administration of President Donald Trump and was succeeded by his former law clerk, Brett Kavanaugh.
Kennedy authored the majority opinion in several important cases, including Boumediene v. Bush and Citizens United v. FEC. Kennedy wrote in part the majority opinions in Planned Parenthood v. Casey. He is also known for his majority opinions in four gay rights cases: Romer v. Evans, Lawrence v. Texas, United States v. Windsor, and Obergefell v. Hodges.

Antonio Villaraigosa

Antonio Ramón Villaraigosa (; né Villar Jr.; born January 23, 1953) is an American politician who was the 41st Mayor of Los Angeles, California, from 2005 to 2013. 
Before becoming mayor, he was a member of the California State Assembly (1994–2000), where he served as the Democratic leader of the Assembly (1996–98), and the Speaker of the California State Assembly (1998–2000). As Speaker, Villaraigosa was an advocate for working families and helped to write legislation protecting the environment, expanding healthcare access, and increasing funding for public schools. 
He ran for mayor in 2001 against Los Angeles City Attorney James Hahn, but lost in the second round of voting. Villaraigosa ran for and was elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 2003. In 2005, he ran for mayor again in a rematch against Hahn and won. During his tenure as mayor, he gained national attention for his work and was featured in Time's story on the country's 25 most influential Latinos. He was the first Mexican American in over 130 years to have served as Mayor of Los Angeles. As Mayor, Villaraigosa spearheaded policies to improve student outcomes in the Los Angeles Unified School District, reduce city and highway traffic, and enhance public safety. 
Since leaving office in 2013, Villaraigosa has continued to be actively engaged in education, civic engagement, water, immigration, transportation, and economic development issues. He speaks nationally and throughout California on these issues.
Villaraigosa is a member of the Democratic Party, and was a national co-chairman of Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign, a member of President Barack Obama's Transition Economic Advisory Board, and Chairman of the 2012 Democratic National Convention in September 2012.In November 2016, Villaraigosa announced his candidacy for Governor of California in 2018. In June 2018, Villaraigosa came in third in the blanket primary election, losing to Gavin Newsom and John Cox.

Art Olivier

Arthur C. Olivier (born August 24, 1957) is an American politician. He is the former mayor of Bellflower, California and was the Libertarian candidate for Vice President in the United States presidential election in 2000 as the running mate of presidential candidate Harry Browne.
Art Olivier is a graduate of Cerritos College with a degree in Design Technology.  He and his wife Joyce have four children.
Olivier served as a councilman (1994–1997), mayor pro tempore (1997–1998) and mayor (1998–1999) of Bellflower, a Los Angeles suburb with 77,000 residents. Olivier is a Realtor with Cogburn Realty.
During his five years on the City Council (1994–99), Olivier privatized the city's tree trimming, crossing guards, street sweeping and the Building Department. He eliminated the city's lighting tax assessment and did not allow eminent domain to be exercised while on council.
