Abbas ibn Firnas, also known as Abbas Abu al-Qasim ibn Firnas ibn Wirdas al-Takurini, was an Andalusian polymath: an inventor, physician, engineer, Andalusian musician, and Arabic-language poet. Often said to be of Berber descent, he was born in Izn-Rand Onda, Al-Andalus, lived in the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba, and is reputed to have attempted flight. Agustín de Betancourt y Molina was a prominent Spanish engineer, who worked in Spain, France and Russia. His work ranged from steam engines and balloons to structural engineering and urban planning. As an educator, Betancourt founded and managed the Spanish Corps of Engineers and the Saint Petersburg Institute of Communications Engineers. Al-Muradi


Alī Ibn Khalaf al-Murādī, Al-Andalus, was a Mechanical engineer and author of the unique technological manuscript entitled Kitāb al-asrār fī natā'ij al-afkār. It was copied and used at the court of Alfonso VI of León and Castile in Christian Spain in the 11th century. The manuscript provides information about a "Castle and Gazelle Clock" and many other forms of complicated clocks and ingenious devices. Al-Muradi was a contemporary of Abū Ishāq Ibrāhīm al-Zarqālī. In 2008, the Book of Secrets of al-Muradi has been published in facsimile, translated in English/Italian/French/Arabic and in electronic edition with all machines interpreted in 3D, by the Italian study center Leonardo3. Eduardo Torroja y Miret, was a Spanish structural engineer, pioneer in the design of concrete shell structures. His first large project was the Tempul cable-stayed aqueduct in 1926, Guadalete, Jerez de la Frontera, in which he used prestressed girders, and he made his name with the concrete shell-roof at the Algeciras Market Hall. Eduardo Torroja designed thin-shell water tower in Fedala and the roof of hippodrome "Zarzuela" in the form of hyperboloid of revolution.
