Gabrielle Émilie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil, marquise du Châtelet was a French mathematician, physicist, and author during the Age of Enlightenment. Her achievement is considered to be her translation and commentary on Isaac Newton's work Principia Mathematica. The translation, published posthumously in 1759, is still considered the standard French translation. Voltaire, one of her lovers, declared in a letter to his friend King Frederick II of Prussia that du Châtelet was "a great man whose only fault was being a woman". She was also romantically linked with two other influential philosophers of the period, Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertius and Julien Offray de La Mettrie. ...more on Wikipedia

Mileva Marić was a Serbian physicist. She was the only woman among Albert Einstein's fellow students at the Zurich Polytechnic. They developed a relationship and had a daughter before their marriage, Lieserl. After their marriage in 1903, they had two sons, Hans Albert and Eduard. Christine Sutton

Christine Sutton is a particle physicist who has edited the CERN Courier since 2003. Sutton was previously based at the University of Oxford, working in the Particle Physics Group and tutoring physics at St Catherine's College. She was Physical Sciences Editor for New Scientist magazine in the early 1980s, and has authored several non-fiction science books, most recently The Particle Odyssey.
