Updated June 14, 2019 457.8k views12 items

It's always heartbreaking to find out that a beloved gay celebrity has died of AIDS. AIDS is a disease which effects an individual's immune system, for which there is no known cure. In the 1980s and early 90s, several famous gay people contracted the disease. Unfortunately, many of these individuals died due to AIDS related complications.

Who is the most famous gay person who died of AIDS? Freddie Mercury tops our list. The Queen front man was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987. He did not publicly discuss his diagnosis until November 22, 1991, when he released a statement confirming his illness. Less than two days later, Mercury died due to complications with the disorder. His longtime partner Jim Hutton, who was also diagnosed with HIV, was at his side at the time of his death.

Rock Hudson was diagnosed with HIV in 1984. He died on October 2, 1985. Hudson and his publicist worked very hard to keep his personal life out of the media, but several of his co-stars have spoken about Hudson's sexuality, stating that he was in fact gay. Other gay actors who died of AIDS include Anthony Perkins, Robert Reed and Denholm Elliot.
