Adam Benjamin, Jr.

Adam Benjamin Jr. (August 6, 1935 – September 7, 1982) was an American politician and a United States Representative from Indiana's 1st congressional district, serving from 1977 until his death from a heart attack in Washington, D.C. in 1982. Benjamin was the first Assyrian-American to be elected to the United States House of Representatives in American history. Benjamin served in the Indiana Senate from 1971 to 1977, the Indiana House of Representatives from 1967 to 1971, and was a member of the Democratic Party.

Albert G. Porter

Albert Gallatin Porter (April 20, 1824 – May 3, 1897) was an American politician who served as the 19th Governor of Indiana from 1881 to 1885 and as a United States Congressman from 1859 to 1863. Originally a Democrat, he joined the Republican Party in 1856 after being expelled by the pro-slavery faction of the Democratic Party. Only the second person born in Indiana to become the state's governor, he reluctantly accepted his party's nomination to run. His term saw the start of Indiana's industrialization that continued for several decades. During the second half of his term a strong Democratic majority took control of the Indiana General Assembly and revoked all of the governor's appointment powers and other authorities, weakening the governors position to its lowest state in the history of the state.

Alberta Darling (born April 28, 1944) is a Republican member of the Wisconsin Senate, representing the 8th District since 1993. She previously served in the Wisconsin Assembly, representing the 10th district from 1990 through 1993. In August 2011, opponents forced a recall election against Darling, but Darling defeated the Democratic challenger, Sandy Pasch, 54 percent to 46 percent.

Alice Palmer

Alice J. Palmer (née Roberts, born June 20, 1939) is an American educator and politician, a former Democratic member of the Illinois Senate. Known as a longtime progressive activist, Palmer represented the state's 13th Senate District from June 6, 1991, until January 8, 1997. At the time, the  district spanned an economically diverse area and included the Chicago communities of Hyde Park, South Shore and Englewood.First appointed to fill the vacant seat of retired state senator Richard H. Newhouse, Jr., Palmer successfully ran for election in 1992 and served a four-year term that ended on January 8, 1997. She ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1995, and was succeeded in office by future President of the United States Barack Obama.
Prior to her time in the state legislature, Palmer was executive director of Chicago Cities in Schools program and founding director of the Chicago Metropolitan YMCA Youth and Government Program.

Allan Kauffman

Allan Kauffman is the current mayor of Goshen, Indiana, serving since April, 1997.
Kauffman is the son of Paul and Mildred Kauffman. A graduate from Goshen High School and Goshen College, he has lived in Goshen his entire life. Prior to becoming Mayor, Kauffman served 16 years as a City Councilman and as Chair of the Finance Committee. He and his wife, Carol Miller, have two adult sons.

Alvin Peterson Hovey

Alvin Peterson Hovey (September 6, 1821 – November 23, 1891) was a Union general during the American Civil War, an Indiana Supreme Court justice, congressman, and the 21st Governor of Indiana from 1889 to 1891. During the war he played an important role in the Western theatre, earning high approval from General Ulysses Grant, and uncovered a secret plot for an uprising in Indiana. As governor, he launched several legal challenges to the Indiana General Assembly's removal of his powers, but was mostly unsuccessful. He successfully advocated election reform before he died in office.

She was the SWP's nominee for President in the 2016 United States presidential election, as well as Vice President in the 2008 United States presidential election.

Ambrose Burnside

Ambrose Everett Burnside (May 23, 1824 – September 13, 1881) was an American soldier, railroad executive, inventor, industrialist, and politician from Rhode Island. He served as governor and as a United States Senator. As a Union Army general in the American Civil War, he conducted successful campaigns in North Carolina and East Tennessee, as well as countering the raids of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan, but suffered disastrous defeats at the Battle of Fredericksburg and the Battle of the Crater. His distinctive style of facial hair became known as sideburns, derived from his last name. He was also the first president of the National Rifle Association.

André Carson

André D. Carson (born October 16, 1974) is the U.S. Representative for Indiana's 7th congressional district, in office since a special election in 2008. The district includes the southern four-fifths of Indianapolis, including downtown. He is a member of the Democratic Party.
He is the grandson of his predecessor, former U.S. Representative Julia Carson (1938–2007). Carson was the second Muslim to be elected to the United States Congress, following Keith Ellison of Minnesota in 2006.

Andrew J. Hunter

Andrew Jackson Hunter (December 17, 1831 – January 12, 1913) was a U.S. Representative from Illinois.
Born in Greencastle, Indiana, Hunter moved with his parents to Paris, Illinois, in 1832. He attended the common schools and Edgar Academy. He worked as a civil engineer from 1852 to 1856. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1856, and commenced practice in Paris. He served as member of the Illinois Senate 1864-1868, and was also a member of the board of investigation of State institutions. He was an unsuccessful candidate in 1870 to the Forty-second Congress and again, in 1882, to the Forty-eighth Congress. He served as judge of the Edgar County court 1886-1892.
Hunter was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-third Congress (March 4, 1893 – March 4, 1895). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1894 to the Fifty-fourth Congress.
Hunter was elected to the Fifty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1897 – March 4, 1899). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1898 to the Fifty-sixth Congress. He served as delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1908. He died in Paris, Illinois, January 12, 1913.  He was interred in Edgar Cemetery.

Andrew Jacobs, Jr.

Andrew Jacobs Jr. (February 24, 1932 – December 28, 2013) was an American lawyer and politician. A Democrat, he served as an Indiana state legislator and Congressman. Jacobs was a member of the United States House of Representatives for thirty years, beginning in the 1960s. His father, Andrew Jacobs, was also a congressman for one term.



Angela Mansfield

Angela Mansfield is an American politician from Indianapolis, Indiana. She was re-elected as an Indianapolis City-County Council member from the 2nd District on November 6, 2007, winning over 52% of the vote. Her district is located on far northern side of Marion County and covers part of Pike Township.
In 2006 Mansfield demonstrated that she opposes discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing and public accommodations by voting with the majority of the council to approve the city's human rights ordinance.
Mansfield is a native of Wolcott, Indiana and has lived in Indianapolis since 1983.

Ann Peoples

Ann E. Peoples is an American politician from Maine. A Democrat, Peoples was elected for the third time in 2010 to represent part of Westbrook, Cumberland County. She also has served on Westbrook's City Council and Planning Board.
Peoples was unable to seek re-election to the Maine House of Representatives for a 5th consecutive term in 2014 due to term-limits. She was replaced by fellow Democrat Dillon Bates.

Arthur C. Mellette

Arthur Calvin Mellette (June 23, 1842 – May 25, 1896)  was the last Governor of Dakota Territory, the first Governor of the State of South Dakota, and an American Civil War veteran.
He is the namesake of Mellette, South Dakota and Mellette County, South Dakota.

Augustin Reed Humphrey

Augustin Reed Humphrey (February 18, 1859 – December 10, 1937) was an American Republican Party politician.
Humphrey was born in 1859 near Madison, Indiana. He moved with his family to Drakesville, Iowa, in 1864. Humphrey graduated from the Southern Iowa Normal School at Bloomfield in 1881; and the law department of the University of Iowa in 1882. He passed the Bar in the same year. Humphrey started to practice law in Broken Bow, Nebraska in 1885, and received a homestead in Custer County, Nebraska in 1886, where he farmed and raised livestock.
Humphrey was a delegate to every Republican State convention from 1887 to 1936; and was the commissioner of public lands and buildings of Nebraska from 1891 to 1895. He was president of the Broken Bow board of education from 1898 to 1914. Humphrey was a probate judge from 1906 to 1910, and the mayor of Broken Bow from 1916 to 1917. Humphrey moved to a ranch on the South Loup River in 1920.
Humphrey was elected to the 67th Congress in 1922 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of long-standing representative, Moses Kinkaid. He served until March 3, 1923, not running for reelection.
Humphrey died on a trip to Fort Collins, Colorado in 1937, and is interred in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Barbara D. Underwood

Barbara Dale Underwood (born August 16, 1944) is an American lawyer currently serving as the Solicitor General of New York, first appointed to the position by N.Y. Attorney General Andrew Cuomo in January 2007, and reappointed in 2011 by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. Underwood also served as the Attorney General of New York upon Schneiderman's resignation from the position on May 8, 2018 until Letitia James was sworn in to succeed her on January 1, 2019; she was the first woman to serve as Attorney General of New York.

Barbara Ringer

Barbara Ringer (May 29, 1925 – April 9, 2009) was one of the lead architects of the 1976 Copyright Act. She spent much of her career lobbying Congress and drafting legislation that overhauled the 1909 Copyright Act.Ringer was the first woman to serve as the Register of Copyrights in the United States Copyright Office. During her three decades with the United States Copyright Office, Ringer gained a reputation as an authority on copyright law.

Bart Peterson

Barton "Bart" R. Peterson (born June 15, 1958) is an American lawyer and politician who served as mayor of the U.S city of Indianapolis, Indiana. He is a past president of the National League of Cities. A Democrat first elected in 1999, he was defeated in 2007 in a bid for a third term in what was widely viewed as a huge upset.
A lifelong Indianapolis resident, Peterson graduated from North Central High School before attending Purdue University. After graduating from the University of Michigan Law School, he practiced law in Indianapolis for several years before joining the staff of Governor Evan Bayh, eventually serving as the Governor's Chief of Staff.
Peterson announced his candidacy for mayor of Indianapolis in 1999 and defeated the Republican candidate, Indiana Secretary of State Sue Anne Gilroy, 52 percent to 41 percent. When Peterson took office in 2000, he became Indianapolis's first Democratic mayor since 1967. Among his accomplishments during his first term were the establishment of charter schools in the city and development of several arts and culture initiatives.
Peterson was re-elected in 2003 with 63 percent of the vote, handily defeating Republican Marion County Treasurer Greg Jordan. During his second term, he led the efforts to consolidate city and county government, merging the Indianapolis Police Department with the Marion County Sheriff's Department to form the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department under the leadership of Marion County Sheriff Frank J. Anderson, and merging several township fire departments with the Indianapolis Fire Department. He also oversaw plans to construct a new home for the Indianapolis Colts while also expanding the Indiana Convention Center. Peterson is also credited for attracting additional downtown development including the construction of a downtown Simon Property Group headquarters and Conrad Hotel tower.
Peterson was expected to easily cruise to re-election in 2007 as no well-known Republican candidates entered the race, leaving relatively unknown political newcomer Greg Ballard as his opposition. Indeed, many thought that the once-dominant Republican Party was all but dead in the city. However, largely due to high property taxes and a rising crime rate, several polls rated the race about even as election day approached. When voters went to the polls, Peterson lost to Ballard by a margin of 51 percent to 47 percent.
Prior to the election, both Democrats and Republicans considered Peterson a political star, and he had been mentioned as a candidate for governor or the United States Senate. Now a "fallen star", the loss prompted many pundits to declare it the biggest political upset in Indiana history.In December 2007, Peterson was mentioned as a possible candidate in the special election to fill the seat of recently deceased Congresswoman Julia Carson. A few days later, Peterson ruled out a run for this office.Harvard University's Institute of Politics hired Peterson as a resident fellow in January 2008. At Harvard he led study groups on urban politics that he confronted in his time as mayor, including building arts communities, education reform, sports facilities, and homelessness. Living Cities, a national philanthropic organization that conducts research and advocates on behalf of cities, selected Peterson as one of its first two Distinguished Urban Fellows in March 2008. Peterson remains involved in community activities in Indianapolis, particularly as the Chair of the Board of Directors for The Mind Trust, a nonprofit organization he founded in 2006 with his former charter schools director David Harris to promote entrepreneurship in education.In June 2009, Peterson joined Eli Lilly and Company as senior vice president of corporate affairs and communications. This is the same position Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels previously held.
